Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | Smyers, Ebert, Shoop, Denton |
Comments or queries: | I am trying to locate information about my Aunt Mina Smyers Shoop. My older brother said she died in a fire along with one or two of her children. She died in 1930. Fifteen years before I was born. My brother was young at the time, but remembers the fire. He doesn't remember her husband's name. He said the fire occured around Canal Winchester but doesn't remember where exactally. I would appreciate any information about this to help with my family tree. A little more information. Her father was John Smyers, her mother Annie Ebert Smyers. She had three, possibly four brothers. THe ones I know are Judson, (my dad), Fredrick, and Franklin. There is a John H. listed in the 1910 census, but no one ever mentioned him that I can remember. She had two sisters, Clara Smyers Denton (she was married to Tracy Denton)(I'm still trying to locate where she is buried. I have a copy of her death certificate and it says Canal Winchester as the burial. She's not with Tracy in Lithopolis. His second wife is there). and she had a sister Mary Smyers Tubbs who was married to Francis Tubbs. If anyone can help fill in the blanks I would appreciate it. Ruby Smyers Bush |

Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | Wooten and Edgington |
Comments or queries: | I have been trying to research my family history/origins for about 10 years. What little information I do have just leads me to more walls. My daddy (03-27-1941 - 11-01-1967) I was 4 at the time. My grandmother (Bertha Irene Edgington 05-04-1920 - 05-28-1980) and Grandfather Edward O. Wooten (1900 - 1969)were married (1939-1940)and divorced (1944-1945)in Ohio (location unknown). I am as far as I know, the last surviving member on the Wooten side of the family and need help locating information. Because I don't have the city where birth, marriage, divorce, death took place, I am at a loss. I do have the names of some cities that may be of use, but don't know where or how to start my search. With daddy and both grandparents gone, finding information has been difficult. I was told by a step-grandmother that my grandfather was married 13 times. She in fact was wife 11 & 13. ( she passed away 3 years ago. I was also told that my grandfather was adopted as a baby and his name was changed and that as an adult he had 2 different names. Edward O. Wooten and Harry O. Thomas. I have been able to identify the names throught military records. I really need some help locating information. Comments or queries: | I am researching the connection between the SAYLOR, CONKLE, and RAGER family lines. I have the Saylor's and the Conkle's married into the RAGER's however no info on them. I have a RAGER family history written on 1950's however the research was only on the RAGER line and did not embellish on the individual women who married into the line. The first township mentioned in the family history is of Madison Township. Dates are from the end of the 1700's/beginning of the 1800's through 1950's. Any help locating information on any of these surnames will be great. You can contact me at misticrose98@yahoo.com Thanks in advanced. Danielle |

Comments or queries: | I am interested in Edward Harman Leyndecker, b 1912,d 1970 and Harmon Leyndecker, b 1873, d 1938. Both are buried in Lithopolis cemetery. My great grandfather was Phillip Leiendecker, b 1864. The information I have has his father as Phillip Leyendecker, b 1835, and his mother as Elizabeth Harmon. Does anyone know of any connection here? My great grandfather Phillip came to the US in 1883 from Finkenbach, Pfalz, Bavaria. He married a Leiendecker, Katherine, from Coshocton county, Ohio. They were separated or divorced between 1910 and 1920. A family member had told me he lived with a cousin in Fairfield county.(Millersport, Baltimore, Lithopolis?) The info I have has his death as 6-6-1947 in Lancaster and he is buried in a Columbus cemetery. According to the US Census, he lived in Coshocton co. in 1900, in Columbus on Moler Street in 1910 and 1920. I could not find him in the 1930 census. I have other Leiendecker relatives buried in Greenlawn cemetery in Columbus. The other side of Leiendecker's also came from Finkenbach in the 1850's and settled in Coshocton county. In my family, the Leindecker name has been spelled every which way it can be. Does anyone have any information that would make this connection? Thanks so much |

They were both orphans and were married around 1910. My Grandfather was from Kentucky and possibly lived in West Virginia. I was only taking a stab in the dark because I don't know how much of what my father told me is true or just a very young boy and time changing the facts. Possibly his father was not the person he claimed to be. I don't know. My point is I'm impressed with your site. Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | Kittsmiller (or variations) |
Comments or queries: | My gg-grandfather, IRVIN HALL, married a woman named Maria in Indiana on 9 Sep 1845. The 1850 Wayne Co, Indiana census lists a George W. KITTSMILLER (aged 6-born in Ohio-relationship "other") in the household, and he moves with the HALL family to Kansas. I am assuming that George must have been Maria's son by a previous marriage. The only other KITTSMILLER (or variant) I can find in that area of Indiana is a John KITTSMILLER in Blackford County (two counties away), who also had a son named George (born in 1846, but dying in 1849). John KITTSMILLER's first wife was Rebecca BOWEN, apparently the daughter of Thomas Bowen of Fairfield County, Ohio, but she died in 1842. My theory is that Maria was his widowed sister-in-law (or other relative) who came to Indiana to help him care for his family until he remarried in June, 1845. So, what I am looking for is a KITTSMILLER male, who died in 1843 or 1844, leaving a widow named Maria, and from that piece of information determining her maiden name. Maria reported that she was 73, and born in Pennsylvania in the 1880 Kansas census. (Of course, it occurs to me that she might also have been a KITTSMILLER spinster, shipped to Indiana to spare her family the shame of an illegitimate birth) |

I have been told that Glick's Cemetery (the original one, at any rate) was destroyed when the site was appropriated for construction of buildings. Were the graves transferred to the new cemetery, then? I have the list of Hoys buried in the "new" cemetery (taken from your Webpage). Phillip Penn Hoy and Elizabeth Eyer are William E. Hoy's grandparents. Comments or queries: | Daniel Hart, b. abt 1808, and Sarah Plotner Hart, b. 28 Jun 1807, are ggrandparents of my Mother, Dorothy Cordill White (1910-1973). Their daughter Ann, b. 1846, Fairfield Co, OH married Henry Franklin Cordill on 5 Feb 1863 in Macy, Miami Co, IN after the Harts moved there from Fairfield Co OH around 1852. Most internet sources have Sarah Hart's date of birth as 1817, but inscription on her tombstone in Macy IN documents her death as 13 Dec 1895 at 88y-5m-16d, hence an 1807 birth as found on your site. I had only the name Anna Hart until yesterday, but now your site has revealed the Hart and Plotner branches to pursue from your county back to Pennslyvania and beyond. They had at least two children: daughter, Cathern Harriet Eddington (or Edington) and son, Idaho Eddington. Cathern (or Catherine was born June 1884 in Fairfield Co., OH (so far, I've been unable to locate a birth certificate or entry for her; her brother, Idaho was born in 1887 or 1888. I do not know when Mary Hamilton and Jacob Eddington married or where, I imagine in 1883 or even 1882. Catherine Eddington Berry is my paternal GM; she said she had no memories of ever having been with her parents; she was raised in Fairfield Co., on a farm, near Buckeye Lake, by cousins of her father. Both her parents died at a young age; I don't believe she ever knew she had had a brother who apparantly also died in infancy. Was there a flu epidemic, measles, mumps, chicken pox, or some such event during the time period of 1887 and 1890s? I have not located death entries for Mary A., Jacob Eddington, or Idaho Eddington. Any suggestions? Are any of these names familiar to anyone? Any suggestions, information, would be greatly appreciated. I want to fill in this gap in our family history. Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | Kenoyer or Knoyer or Knauer |
Comments or queries: | I am doing research on my mother's Kenoyer family of Canton, Mississippi. I believe that her great great grandfather Johannes Ulrich (Uli) Kenoyer married an Elizabeth Kittsmueller Oct 21, 1811 in Fairfield County, OH and he died in Bloom Twp OH August, 1814. His son Lewis had a son Lewis who was born in Indiana and moved to Mississippi, he is my ancestor. He moved to Canton Mississippi as a young man where he married Clementine Worrell October 12, 1848. That date I can prove from family bible records. I cannot prove his relationship to your Kenoyer family as I do not have his birthdate or place in any of our family bible records. I do have his death date and place November 25, 1878 in Canton, Madison Co, MIss. He named a daughter Mary Lenora....and in the book, "Preachers, Farmers, Pioneers the Kenoyer Family in America, Descendents of John and Elizabeth Kenoyer from Germany" compiled by Elizabeth Kenoyer Davis in 1971 a "Lewis Kenoyer Jr. b 1819 in PA was brought up by his Uncle MIchael. (his father Lewis died in 1820 probably in Indiana) At an early age he went to Mississippi and married ? He had one child that is known named Lenora Kenoyer". NOw this could all be coincidence, but I rather doubt it. I just need to find some proofs. thanks for any help that you can offer. Sincerely, Penny Maroldo |

Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | Keller, Beery |
Comments or queries: | You are to be commended for so thoroughly investigating your information and sources. My Grandpa John Keller was born in Fairfield Co in 1862. His father was George Keller (Mary Catherine Campbell). In the court house records of the marriage, her last name is Cammel. However, I have found other information which indicates that her last name was actually Campbell. Her brothers and father were in later censuses, from other counties, under Campbell -- maybe they changed it -- or maybe it was written phoenetically ?? I believe that there is a connection between the Beery Family and the Keller family -- I believe that Miss Keller married a Beery. A son of Jacob and Sarah Beery is buried at the foot of the grave of Jacob Keller. (According to a picture I have of the gravestones). Again, thank you for your efforts. Whoops, forgot to tell you they are buried in Sugar Hill Cemetery -- I think it is in Perry County. Eleanor |

Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | CLOUSER, FELLERS |
Comments or queries: | Your presentation about Bloom Twp. is very informative and easy to read. Wish my ancestors were as well documented as yours! In 1850 census, my gggrandfather, Peter CLOUSER, was a tailor; by 1860, he was an innkeeper in Greencastle. He and his wife, Elizabeth ZWEYER, had several children, among who were Emma and Edgar. Are there any records showing where the inn stood? Is it possible to indicate where inn might have stood on a plat map of Greencastle today? What was name of the inn? What clientele stayed at the inn? Did the CLOUSERs own the property and the inn? Who may have been their neighbors? What economic crisis, if any, would make the CLOUSERs leave Greencastle for Columbus? Their oldest child, Emma, married John Ray FELLER in October, 1863. She died in April, 1864, after birth of their son, Edgar. In 1880 census, he was 16 and living with his father, John. What happens to Eddie (as he was called in family photos) after the death of his father? Who did he marry? When? Does he continue living in Greencastle? Peter and Elizabeth's son, Edgar Peter (1858-63) is buried in Lithopolis Cemetery. What was cause of death---epidemic, fall from horse or some such irreparable damage? |

Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | Gordon/Gorden Plotner/Plattner Morehart Roller etc |
Comments or queries: | Samuel Gordon (Gorden) died in Bloom Township before March, 1823. His widow Barbara was administrator of his estate. In 1830, his son-in-law, Conrad Plotner filed a land partition request against Samuel Gordon Jr. stating that he, Conrad Plotner, and Samuel Gordon, Sr. had purchased land in Bloom Township in 1812. That Samuel Gordon, Sr. had since deceased leaving Samuel Gordon, Jr., John Gordon, and Catherine Gordon now Plotner and wife of the petitioner, his heirs at law. That the said John Gordon was also deceased leaving but one child, Samuel Gordon, who had already transferred his interests in the land to Conrad Plotner. That the said Samuel Gordon, Jr. is now absent from this state in parts unknown to this petitioner ... I am looking for any information on this family - where did they come from (appear to have been in Northumberland, Pennsylvania 1798 - 1802); when and where did John Gordon die - who was his wife (son Samuel may have been born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania in 1801); where was Samuel Gordon in 1830 - who did he marry; who was Barbara - was she connected with any of the other Bloom Township families; are these Gordon connected with the other Gordons in Fairfield County for whom there are marriage records in the 1810 - 1825 period; where was Samuel Gordon, Sr. buried - I haven't found any burial record; when did Samuel Gordon, Sr. begin residence in Fairfield County; etc. Any help will be greatly appreciated. There's a lot of information out about this family but there is a big lack of documentation, so I'm looking especially for documented data. Thanks! Vicki |

Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | Courtright, Cook, Ayres? |
Comments or queries: | Here is the question. Throughout my childhood my dad used to regale us with stories about our ancestor Abraham van Courtright. Dad took us on a long drive in the country from Columbus to the cemetary where we all saw Abraham's grave. I would like to take my kids there and show them, but although I am familiar with the area, I have no idea where that cemetary was. Can anyone direct me? As I understand it my grandmother, Helen Cook Ayres, and her sister, Mildred Cook Spears, were related to the Courtrights. Dad talked about big family reunions at Rising Park in Lancaster when he was a child. The Cook family and the Spears family both ended up in Columbus in the funeral busines, but my dad used to talk about the funeral carriages in Baltimore, OH, how the Cooks had a black horse to pull the black carriage and a white horse to pull the white one. Helen and Mildred were estranged from their brother so I don't know much more about that side of the family. Any background would be fun to know. Just e-me! Thanks. |

Comments or queries: | I have much interest in Greencastle information for the period from about 1808-1833. John Wilson married in 1808, Anna Barbara Garey, daughter of Killian (or Gideon) Garey (or Garry, Gerry, Gary, Gehri Carey). They seem to have lived in Greencastle around the time of 1823- until 1833 - when Anna's home is listed as an Elector Meeting place. John possibly owned a Tavern. John & Anna would be my Great, great, great grandparents, thru their son, John L. Wilson, born 1823 (Greencastle?), Fairfield County, Ohio. |

Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | Rhinehart/Leslie/Denman |
Comments or queries: | Looking for information on the Leslie or Lasley family of Fairfield Co. Susannah Leslie married Jacob Rhinehart in 1821/22 in Fairfield Co. and moved to Seneca Co. with baby Noah and Jacob about 1822/23. Jacob killed in Seneca 1823 and Susannah came back to Fairfield, putting Noah with strangers and remarried to a Mr. Denman. She had at least 3 more children with Denman: Terry, Abner and Martha. There may also have been another baby born to her after Jacob died. He was named after his father, but may not have survived as records state that Noah was the only surviving son of Jacob and Susannah Rhinehart. Does anyone have any information on what happened to Susannah and her children? Does anyone have information on when and who this Denman is that she married? Death dates and places of burial? She is my mystery woman. Thanks, Jaye Martz |

Daniel Boyer became a vast land owner and both brothers were farmers. John's son George L. Comments or queries: | I am looking for any info on Meeker and allied family names [Allen, Clark, Cole, Day, Dildine, Evans, Force, Hickle, Priest, Strode, Updegraph]. In the 1820 Bloom Twp, Fairfield Ct. Federal census are found the households of Amos Meeker & wife, & Jacob Meeker & family located next to one another. In the northeast quarter of land section 23, TWP 14, Range 19, in 1809, & in the northwest quarter of section 24, TWP 14, range 19, in 1811, Jacob Meeker received land patents from the President of The US. I never found when he disposed of these parcels, but the History of Seneca Ct, Ohio [where Jacob's son, Charles moved to] states that the family came to Fairfield Ct. from Pennsylvania , when Charles was 12 years old [Charles was born in 1800], making their arrival date 1812. Jacob & family are found in the 1810 Luzerne Ct, Pennsylvania federal census. Fairfield Ct Ohio deed searches show Jacob bought land in 1820, 1821, 1824, 1828, 1830 & 1832, always in Bloom [TWP 14], Section 32, Range 20, either in the west half and/or the south west quarter of this section 32 of land. Deeds trace the later sale of this land to some of the children of Jacob, including Aaron, Elisha, John & Charlotte. In the 1830 Bloom TWP federal census, only Jacob & family are found, with Amos & wife now gone. Knowing that Amos was born in 1745, and since Amos was Jacob's father, with the census of 1820 reporting him as over 45, I presume that both he & wife died? In July, 1836 Jacob Meeker died, and his estate papers show a bill for tombstones paid, yet NO trace of stone or burial may be found either in Fairfield or neighboring counties, for either Jacob OR wife, Elizabeth? Except for the 1820 census report, NO trace of Amos NOR his wife, Johanna Force Meeker, may be found either. Amos is not mentioned on ANY of the deeds found? Does anyone know this land in Bloom TWP, range 20, section 32, southwest quarter, which is obviously their original homestead?? It is bounded on the north by Marcy Road [Route 41], between cedar hill road on the west, & sitterley road on the east. The section is also bisected [north-south] by route 6. Is there still a farm there? Could there be a private graveyard and/or information with the present owner about any records, tombstones removed etc??? Has anyone else heard anything about the rumour I have heard [from two separate places], concerning a very early Meeker church, which was long ago disbanded and their records merged with another local church in the area?? For point of information, here is Jacob's family, with birth dates: Aaron [1795], John [1797], Delila [1798], Charles [1800], Hannah [1802], Nancy [1806], Elisha [1809], Abigail [1811], & Charlotte [1819]. |

Comments or queries: | My sister told me about this web site, so I have just cruised in for the first time today. It's really exciting for us! Our grandmother was Helen Cook. She was a descendant of Ezra Courtright. I was hoping to find information about Helen and her sister, Mildred, but I have been unable to do so. We have humdreds of photographs dating back to the mid 19th century, and we would love to be able to put names with the faces! We'll check our family records and see if there's any additional information we can provide to fill in some of the blanks. |

Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | Morehart, Courtright, alspach to name a few. |
Comments or queries: | An Obit of Mrs Anna Morehart Courtright has been given to me and I thought if any of Anna's family are aware of this little thought on their kin. If not they may like to know about it. Anna Mroehart, dau. of Christian and Lydia Morehart, was b. near Greencastle, Fairfield county, Ohio Feb. 13, 1822. She married Joh Courtright March 5, 1840. To them were given nine children of whom 4 are now living- Two sons and tow dau.:Christian Courtright, of Shelbyville, Ill. Hercules Courtright of Harrisburg, Ohio., Mrs. Ella Bennett, of Mentone, Ind. and Mrs. Minnie Stallsmith, of Lithopolis, Ohio. (It goes on:)One sister is living, Mrs. Naomi Alspaugh, of Rock Mill. She united with the Presbyterian church in Lithopolis abt. 1853. She ever evinced her faith by a godly walk and chaste conversation, faithful to the church and its services so long as able to attend. (I think this is so sweet to have these words to live after almost a 100 years.) She loved the Bible, and also the church hymns, many of which she knew and was wont to repeat them over and over. "Strength and honor were her clothing." "In her tongue was the law of kindness." "She looked well to the ways of her household." "She ate not the bread of idleness." "Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." Who can estimate the value of such a life, begun in time, to run on throughout eternity. "The righteous shall be had in everlasting rememberance." After a short illness of a few days her spirit left its clay tenement to be forever with the Lord, on the morning of the 16 of November 1903, thus departing at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 3 days. . . . laid to rest in Lithopolis cemetery. Be glad to hear from any one of you of this lineage, this excited me beyond belief. joretta@columbus.rr.com |

Surnames in Bloom Twp.:: | THRASH |
Comments or queries: | I am the great-great-great grandson, of Michael Thrash, who was born in 1773; died on 9 Jun 1863; and is buried at Salem Church, located on Slough Rd, outside of Carroll, in Fairfied County. I just spent the past 3 Hours working on my mothers family. THANK YOU SO MUCH !, for those responsible in putting this information together. I do have one small discrepancy. According to these records, Michael Thrash's wife was named "Rebecca". Here is the story given to me by my grandmother Mary M Thrash, 25 years ago... John Smaltz was a tennant farmer and lay pastor, who cared for Mr & Mrs Andrew Flick of Fairfied County, Ohio, during the last 15 years of their lives. In 1807, Andrew Flick bought a quarter section of land from the U.S. Government at a land office sale held at Chillicothe, Ohio, which was the Capital of Ohio at the time. Upon the Flick's death, the court awarded John Smaltz, $830 for taking care of the Flick's. Then in 1833, John Smaltz bought the land for $1696.41. According to Andrew Flick's will, the land was to be sold to the highest bidder, and John Smaltz had the highest bid. Later the land was divided among his 9 children. One of his daughter's, Malinda, got the portion containing what is now, Salem Church; located on Slough Rd, Fairfied County. The church was built in 1830. Malinda married Michael Thrash, and the other 8 children married others named Alexander, Thrush, Zaayer, Stebelton, Alspach, and Hempleman. Therefore, everyone in that graveyard, is related one way or the other. All I can figure out, is that Malinda Smaltz was called Rebecca by her family. From Michael, to Levi, to Ervin, to John, to Doris Thrash Hamler,(my mother), five generations of THRASH's have been laid to rest at that same Salem Church. Though you can't read it anymore, the following poem is on Michael Thrash's tombstone from 1863... Go home my friend, dry up your tears; I must be here a thousand years; As you are now, so once was I; As I am now, so you shall be... Prepare for death, and follow me. John C Hamler |
