of her father. "... m her 2nd cousin Joseph, s/o William of Providence, on Apr
21, 1659. Joseph's lot at Pawtuxet was near or adjoining the one belonging to
William of Rehoboth, who gave his dau Hannah that adjoining land. Hannah
accompanied her husband to Musketa Cove, where he played a prominent role in
the early affairs of Oyster Bay, Long Island. In 1668 he founded a community
which was called Carpenterville until the later 1800's when it became a
Methodist campground. It latere evolved into a popular summer resort named
W=Sea Cliff, with a lavish 300-room Victorian Hotel catering to well-heeled New

David Warnock. Fourth: never previously married. 5th; children living are Emma L. b June 2, 1866, Edwin b Sep 6, 1867, Alice J. b Oct 11, 1870, Ida M. b July 10, 1877, Walter S. b Mar 4, 1882, Clyde S. b April 23, 1884. "Date of Reply" June 4, 1898 Simon E. Ropp.

APPLICATION FOR ACCRUED PENSION: State of Ohio, County of Paulding. On this
10th day of March 1925, personally appeared Tamor Ropp, who, being duly sworn, declares that she is the lawful widow of Simon E. Ropp, deceased; that he died on the 29th day of November 1914 that he had been granted a pension by Certificate # 245,005, which is herewith returned (if not, state why) "Can't find it". that he had been paid the pension by the Pension Agent at Washington D.C. up to the 4th day of September 1914, after which date he had not been employed or paid in the Army, Navy or Marine service of the United States except ______________ [no answer]; that she was married to the said Simon E. Ropp on the 17th day of August 1865 at CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OH, in the State of Ohio; that her name before said marriage was TAMOR MORRIS; that she had not been previously married; that her husband had not been previously married; that she hereby makes application for the pension which had accrued on the aforesaid Certificate to the date of death. She hereby appoints P.W. STUMM of Paulding, Ohio, her tru and lawful attorney to prosecute this claim. Her residence is Township of Paulding, State of Ohio, Post Office address R.D. #1, Latty, Paulding County, Ohio. [The 2 required witness signatures were W. B. Jackson and A. A. Bauer]

Also personally appeared W. B. Jackson, residing at Paulding Ohio and A. A.
Bauer residing at Paulding, Ohio who, being duly sworn, say that they were
present and saw Tamor Ropp sign her name to the foregoing declaration; that
they know her to be the lawful widow of Simon E. Ropp who died on the 29th day of November 1914, and that their means of knowledge that said parties were husband and wife, and the the husband died on said date are as follows: "That we lived near them for a good many years, and know of the soldiers death and burial". Paper dated 10th of march, 1915.

LETTER TO COMMISSIONER OF PENSIONS, HON. G. M. SALTZGABER, WASHINGTON, D.C.

Sir, I am 74 years of age and desire to have my pension increased under Section One (1) of the Act of Congress Approved September 8th, 1916, and submit the following facts in my case: 1. My pension certificates is numbered 791.369, 2. The name of my husband was Simon E. Ropp, 3. His company and Regiment was Co. A, 2nd Regt, Ohio Vol Infantry, 4. The exact date of my birth April 17, 1849, The place of my birth was Springfield Clark Co, Ohio. 6. I was NOT the wife of the soldier during his service. Etc . . .

WAR DEPARTMENT, ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE, WASHINGTON D.C., MAY 28, 1879 ...

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of application for Pension # 264.294 and to return it herewith such information as is furnished by the files of this Office. It appears from the Rolls on file in this Office that Simon E. Ropp was enrolled on the 24th day of Aug 1861 at Urbana in Co A, 2nd Regiment of Ohio Volunteers, to serve 3 years or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 30 day of Sept 1861 at Camp Dennison, in Co A, 2nd Regt of Ohio Volunteers to serve 3 years or during the war. On the muster rolls of Co A of that Regiment from enrollment to Aug 31, 1863, he is reported present Sept & Oct 1863. Missing in Action at the battle of Chickamanga Ga Sept 19, 20, 1863. Co. was in action that place and dates Nov and Dec 1863 Pris. War Richmond Va, Absent pris. on subsequent rolls of Co, mustered out at Columbus, Oh June 3, 1865 on individual roll with remark. Ris. War. Captured Sept 20, 1863 Chickamanga, Ga. [the following comments follow directly after the above but in different handwriting . . . ] Prisoner of War Records show E.S., S.E. or Simon E. Rapp or Ropp or Sam'l E. Ross Co A or D said Regt captured at Chickamanga Ga Sept 19, 1863, conf'd at Richmond, Va Sept 29, 1863 sent to Danville Va Dec 12, 1863. Admitted to Hosp'l at Audersonville Ga Sept 9, 1864 with Scorbutus, returned to prison Dec 28, 1864 paroled at Jacksonville FL Apl 28, 1865 reported at Camp Parole M'd May 14, 1865 and was sent to Camp Chase Ohio May 18, 1865 where he reported May 22, 1865 and was sent to Columbus, Ohio May 25, 1865 for Muster out. No other evidence of Medical treatment or disability on said records. This report is accepted as referring to Simon E. Ropp Co A 2nd Ohio Vols.

CERTIFICATE TO COPIES

I, G. P. Seibert, Sole Judge and Ex-Officio Clerk of the Probate Courth within and for the County of Champaign and State of Ohio, the same being a Court of Law and of Record, do hereby certify that the following is a true copy of certificate from the record of Marriage in this County: "State of Ohio, Champaign County, #201. I certify that I have this day solemnized the marriage of Simon E. Ropp with Tamor Morris. Witness my hand this 17th day of August 1865. David Warnock, M.G. " . . . as the same appears upon the records of said Court, Record G. page 41. [dated 24 Dec 1914]

A TYPED WRITTEN LETTER, WORD FOR WORD, SAYS THE FOLLOWING . . .

In the matter of pension claim of Simon E. Ropp Co A 2d Rect, Ohio Volunteer
Infantry, Certificate # 245,003: THE STATE OF OHIO, PAULDING CO. I, P. W.
Stumm, a Notary Public, in and for the county and State aforesaid, hereby
certify that there has this day been brought to me a sheet of paper giving the
record of the Marriage of the following persons, as follows;- "John Ropp and
Elizabeth Young was married Oct 15th, 1840." That said parties are represented to be the father and mother of the above named Simon E. Ropp. The next entry is as follows: "Simon E. Ropp was born Jan 13, 1842" Then follows the record of the birth and deaths of more than half dozen more of the Ropp family. There is no date to the sheet of paper I copied from and no erasures or alternations made on it. From is general appearance I believe it to be a true copy of the family record of John Ropp the father of the soldier.
The State of Ohio, Paulding County . . .Simon E. Ropp, being duly sworn says,
that he is the same person named in the above certificate of said Notary
Public, and that John Ropp and Elizabeth Young therein named married is therin stated were my father and mother, and that they are now both dead; that the sheet of paper in said certificate referred to was written by my mother before her deat and given to my youngest sister, Martha E. Kerns, near Mechanisburgh, Champaign County, Ohio of who I procured it, and being very familiar with my mothers writing I know it was written by her. I have been unable to find the family Bible of my father and mother. [Signed by Simon E. Ropp on May 28, 1913]
