The following is a cut and paste from the submitted gedcom to ancestry.com by Wendy Platt back in 2004. It explains, though, why Benjamin is listed separately from his wife in later census records.

"Benjamin Rarey II

Historical notes about Benjamin Rarey (1827-1920) son of Benjamin and Mary Arnold Rarey. The following was written by Richard C. Rarey after conversation during a visit with Paul S. Wonderly, one of the few living grandchildren of Benjamin Rarey on May 17, 1975.

Settling in Harding Co., Ohio in 1855 and devoting his energy to clearing farm land along the Sciota River of its trees for the opening of new ground on which crops might be raised.
Over the years with help of his sons and daughters, he was able to acquire additional farm land a couple of miles to the East. In addition to farming, Benjamin Rarey was also skilled in early manufacture of bricks in Hardin County, Ohio. Having been awarded the contract for supply of brick for the early Hardin County Home and Infirmary, located west of the small community and county seat, Kenton, Ohio. After digging the clay and firing the bricks for this and other sizable buildings, he sold his original farm to his son, Ralph Waldo Rarey and with the help of his wife, constructed a most substantial two story home on the farm located west of Kenton. This home is still standing and in good repair yet today.
After Benjamin and Mary Delia, his wife, had lived in this home for several years, a strange quirk of mind befell. Benjamin and his outlook on life began to change. Speculation at the present would indicate a light stroke or perhaps a man's change of life. In any event this couple's life was altered forever. Benjamin had accused his wife of an indiscriminate affair with a Doctor Phillips of Kenton. There was absolutely no proof or even basis of fact for these accusations according to the family and close friends. The situation was not discussed much within the immediate family but a definite barrier had been established in Benjamin's mind. He continued to live at home for some time but more as a boarder than a husband. Subsequently, without the family's knowledge, he set about to dispose of their property and chattels by converting everything of worth and value to hard cash. By an unguarded word he let it slip, that his intention was to leave his wife, family and friends in Hardin County for greener pastures elswhere. But, with his intention exposed, the rmainder of the estate was divided, if somewhat unevenly for Mary's sake. It was substantiated in later years that Benjamin left Kenton, Ohio with a sum of over fourteen thousand dollars. The exact year is not clear as there was no divorce or legal separation, but it most likely occurred around the end of the nineteenth century. Most of the remaining years of his life were spent traveling from relative to relative across the country, staying as long as the hospitality lasted.
Another grandchild, Amy C. Rarey, related her displeasure's of her grandfather's extended visits to the home of her parents, Ralph and Emma Rarey. It seems the old gent was particularly fond of chewing tobacco and especially enjoyed his last chew of the day while reclining in bed. With dimmed vision and little aim, the floor accumulated the brunt of his misdirected shots. On his second and subsequent visits, he was not afforded the guest bedroom but instead the room and bed of his young granddaughter, Amy. Amy being given the guest room for the duration of the visit. Newspapers in several thickness were used to cover the entire floor area to absorb stray or missed shots that might have been directed in the vicinity of a cuspidor. Needless to say, young Amy could remember no pleasant memories of her old grandfather Rarey's visits. She related, "The odor of stale tobacco juice lingered in my room for weeks and in my mind for years after his departure."
Benjamin probably spent the greatest amount of detached seperation time with his oldest son, William Rarey, who was at that time living in Falls City, Oregon. His extended stay on the wast coast of the United States was most likely necessitated due to the great distance and traveling time to reach relatives in Ohio. At the death of Mary Delia, his wife, in Feb 1916, Benjamin was still living in Oregon and did not return to Kenton, Ohio for the funeral. However, their son William, did return by train reaching Kenton to pay his respects several days after his Mother's death.
Paul Wonderly, grandson of Benjamin, remembers while employed by the Railroad and working in Huntington, Indiana, seeing his grandfather returning from the West coast for a planned stay of his last years with his son-in-law John Wonderly. John, whose wife was Katherine Rarey, daughter of Benjamin, was a widower, his wife having died in 1902 was making a home for his three sons with help of a full time housekeeper. Paul said he phoned his brother Robert and told him "Grandpa is on the way". Without a guest room accommodation, Benjamin was consigned to sleep with the Senior Mr. Wonderly. At this time one of his brain stimulating exercises was to stand on his head in bed one minute before going to sleep. He related to Paul it had also improved the function of his liver. The old gent, not being a sound sleeper, was prone to thrashing, tossing and turning in bed throughout the night which in turn drove the sleep from an exhausted John Wonderly. After two weeks of this, Paul confronted his grandfather with the necessity of moving on to the Ohio relatives.
Just where he settled after his Huntington, Indiana visit is not known but in the fall of 1918, he was known to have visited in Groveport and Columbus, Ohio. When in Columbus visiting Jess Rarey, he suffered a light stroke leaving him partially paralyzed and rending his emotional stability, this terminating the prolonged travels and visitations to relatives. His host placed the old gent in a Private Sanitarium at the cost of $35.00 per week. Benjamin's next of kin were notified of the dire condition and asked to take charge.
Ralph Waldo Rarey, his youngest living son, left the Kenton Farm and arrived in Columbus to evaluate the situation. Only to learn his father was nearly broke or soon would be with the expense at the Sanitarium. He was down to $600 on deposit in a California Bank and a $75 check in Huntington, Indiana. Ralph, not being a resident of Franklin County, could not immediately be appointed Guardian while his father was in this county. By some unknown legal maneuvering, Benjamin was transferred to the Infirmary of the Hardin County Home- the very same building constructed of the clay he had dug, moulded and fired into bricks. This was to be his next to last visit, for in 1920, his health deteriorated and at that time he was transferred to the San Antonio Hospital in Kenton, where he found his peace on Feb. 22, 1920.
