1930 - Suit on Congovit [sic]. A suit to collect on a cognovit note was filed by Eugene Moore in common please court for John C. Brossman, administrator, against C. C. McClain and others. [Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, July 7, 1930]. (Cognovit: an acknowledgment or confession by a defendant that the plaintiff's cause, or part of it, is just, wherefore the defendant, to save expense, permits judgment to be entered without trial. -- An instrument in writing whereby a defendant in an action acknowledges a plaintiff's demand to be just.)
1931 - Real Estate Transfers - Pella C. Brossman to John C. Brossman, 23 acres in Lima township. [Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Dec. 8, 1931]
1942 - Answer is Filed. In the case of Pella C. Brossman against Flora B. Brossman, executrix of the estate of John C. Brossman, who died Nov. 1, 1940, the answer of the executrix was filed yesterday in common pleas court. She admits she is executrix of the estate but denies all other allegations and asks dismissal of the petition. She also filed her answer as an individual, admitting she is the widow of John C. Brossman and that he paid the taxes and upkeep of property described in the petition. She says she has paid to Charles E. and Pella C. Brossman for use of the premises, payments having been made for the period from March 1, 1941, to March 1, 1942. She denies other allegations and asks dismissal of the petition. [Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, January 27, 1942]
1942 - Petition Dismissed - Following a two-day hearing before Judge Phillip H. Wetland of Mt. Gilead in common pleas court here, the petition of Pella C. Brossman, Pataskala, against Flora Brossman, her daughter-in-law, was dismissed. The elder Mrs. Brossman sued to set aside a deed to 195 acres of land in Lima township executed in favor of her son, John Brossman. [Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, May 28, 1942]
1942 - On Wednesday another chapter in the case of Brossman against Brossman
will be heard. This is one of two suits involving the estate of the late
John Brossman of which Flora Brossman is executor. Boyd and Boyd, Flory and
Flory and Kibler and Kibler are counsel in the case. [Newark Advocate,
Newark, Ohio, Nov. 26, 1942]
1942 - Petition Amended. The second amended petition in the case of Pella C. Brossman, Pataskala, against Flora B. Brossman, Pataskala, executor of the estate of John B. Brossman and the Pataskala Banking company, was filed yesterday in common pleas court. Pending for more than a year, the case has had several hearings on motions and demurrers. Pella Brossman alleges that on jan. 5, 1939, she paid to her son John, $4,0000 with which he was to purchase a farm near Pataskala. A part of the agreement was that he was to care for his father, Charles E. Brossman, and his mother, Pella Brossman, for the rest of their lives. Both are in their 80's. The son died in November, 1940, and Mrs. Brossman alleges that the executor has rejected her claim to the care and support as agreed by the son. His will left his entire estate to the widow, now executor of the estate. The mother asks judgment in the sum of 44,000. Boyd & Boyd, Columbus and Kibler & Kibler of Newark represent the plaintiff. [Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Dec. 23, 1942]
1946 - The Salvation Army of Columbus, with headquarters in 138 East State Street, is to have the residue of the estate of Elmer G. Whitehead, Lima township, after all debts and expenses are paid. The will stipulates the money be used for welfare and relief work and John Brossman was named executor. A codicil to the will names Chapin B. Beem, Columbus attorney as executor replaying Brossman who had died. The estate is estimated at $2,800 of which $2000 is real estate and $800 is personal property. [Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Sept. 12, 1946]
1946 - Memoriam - In loving memory of our dear husband and father, John C. Brossman. "God's will be done, and though you're gone, Unto your heavenly rest, Fondest memories still remain, With those who loved you best.' Sadly missed by wife and children, Flora Brossman, Catherine E. Roby, Pella L. Fairchild, Rollin J. Brossman and families. [The Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Nov. 1, 1946]
