History of Caldwell CO and Livingston Counties Missouri 1886
Page 529-30

William S Coffman (Farmer and Stock-raiser, Post Office Georgeville)

In this sketch of a truly representative citizen of Caldwell County may be
found much of encouragement for the rising generation, and of admiration for
those whose lives may have been passed in a manner similar of that of Mr Coffman. John Coffman, his father, was born in Rockingham CO VA., and when only three years old was taken by his parents to Ohio. In after years he learned the trade of shoemaking and also followed farming up to the time of his death in 1863, at the age of 60. His worthy wife, formerly Miss Susan Barnhart, died in Ohio in 1874. There were eleven children in their family and an item of interest if found in the fact that the combined ages of these persons aggregated 578 years, 11 months and 12 days on Feb 1 1885, last. Their names are here given: William S 59 years 11 months and 3 days, Mariah E 58 years 9 months 15 days, Grace 55 years 10 months 24 days Rebecca 57 years 4 months 28 days Martin 54 years 4 months 19 days, Jesse 52 years 10 months 27 days, Magdalena 49 years 8 months 19 years, Margaret 48 years 16 days, John 45 years 11 months and 16 days, Susannah 44 years 1 month 29 days, Eliza Jane 41 years 7 months 16 days.

William S Coffman was born in Fairfield County Ohio, Feb 25, 1825 and for 52
years he lived on and improved the same section of land upon his birth
occurred. He has always followed farming-working for his father until 23 years old. April 5 1849 he married to Miss Zeruah M Williamson, of the same county as himself. Eight of the ten children born to them are living: Clara Belle was born March 15, 1855; Frank E born October 8 1856, married Miss Kittie J Warder Feb 9 1881, George W born Feb 8 1859, at medical college in Chicago; Henry W., born Dec 3 1860, of the Firm of S.F.& H W Coffman, of Georgeville; Clement L. V., born March 25, 1863; Cora M. born June 6 1865, married to O P Harrisman, January 20, 1886; Amon B born December 16, 1867, and Orin W., born October 16, 1871. Mrs. Coffman father, George W Williamson, was born in Virginia in 1801 and died in Ohio December 10, 1879, aged 78 years old; her mother is still living on the old homestead in Fairfield County, Ohio. Mr. Coffman became a resident of this county in 1876, at which which time he settled on the farm which he now occupies. This is one of the finest tracts of land in this vicinity.
Of the 696 acres which he owns 272 are in Caldwell County and the remainder in Ray County, across the line. All convenient and necessary buildings and
improvements are to be found upon this place. The dwelling, a model of beauty in outward appearance, by its interior indicates the abode of refined and cultured people. The entire farm is under cultivation, well supplied with water, timber, etc., and embraces an orchard 12 acres in extent. Fined graded Short-horn cattle graze upon the excellent grass pastures. Mr Coffman is no policitcal aspirant, preferring to pass his time as much as possible in the company of his family; for eight years, however, he held the position of town trustee.
Himself and wife are devoted, repected members of the Christian Union Church. Mr Coffman is still in the vigor of life and the enjoyment of health. His
beautiful home contains all that wealth cam provide. He is a successful man-some say a fortunate man, though his labors are seen less than their results. In social life he has a host of friends, and his domestic relations is most happy.

OBIT: June 20, 1896 edition. William Coffman was born in Fairfield county in 1825, and died at his home in Cowgill, Missouri, on June 5, 1896. In 1849 he married Zernah Williamson who survives. The family moved west more than 20 years ago. William's son, A. B. Coffman of Cowgill married Matilda Will on June 10, 1896. John Smaltz/Smalts of Bloom Twp., Case #2247 filed 1848. Administrators were Elias Smalts and Daniel Rockey. Widow was Magdalene. George and Michael Smalts bought personal property. John Smaltz owned land in sections 9 & 10, twp. 14, range 20. "Fairfield County Will and Estate Abstracts, Cases 2001-2300, Jean Collier, Fairfield County Chapter OGS, 2002, p 30.

"Here is the story given to me by my grandmother Mary M
Thrash, 25 years ago...
John Smaltz was a tennant farmer and lay pastor, who cared
for Mr & Mrs Andrew Flick of Fairfied County, Ohio, during
the last 15 years of their lives. In 1807, Andrew Flick
bought a quarter section of land from the U.S. Government at
a land office sale held at Chillicothe, Ohio, which was the
Capital of Ohio at the time. Upon the Flick's death, the
court awarded John Smaltz, $830 for taking care of the
Flick's. Then in 1833, John Smaltz bought the land for
$1696.41. According to Andrew Flick's will, the land was to
be sold to the highest bidder, and John Smaltz had the
highest bid. Later the land was divided among his 9
children. One of his daughter's, Malinda, got the portion
containing what is now, Salem Church; located on Slough Rd,
Fairfield County. The church was built in 1830. Malinda
married Michael Thrash, and the other 8 children married
others named Alexander, Thrush, Zaayer, Stebelton, Alspach,
and Hempleman. Therefore, everyone in that graveyard, is
related one way or the other." John C. Hamler via my guestbook, May, 2001.

John C. Hamler of Columbus, Ohio, sent me via Nov. email the following paragraphs, copied verbatim:

I [John Hamler] quote from a document my grandmother Mary M Thrash wrote in 1974:

"In 1807, Andrew Flick of Fairfield County, bought a quarter section of land
from the Government at a land office sale held in Chillicothe, Ohio, which was the Capital of Ohio at the time (believed to be 640 acres)"

My grandmother explained that this 640 acres, encompassed what was known for
many generations as the "Thrash Family Farm". It also included the land where Salem Church (and Cemetery) now stands; as it was the SMALTZ family, who
donated the land for the Church to be built.

Concerning John Smaltz she wrote:

"John Smaltz was a tenant farmer and lay pastor. He worked for his in-laws,
Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Flick. He also cared for them for the last 15 years of their lives. The court awarded him $830 for this; and in 1833, he bought the land for $1696.41. According to Mr Flick's will, the land was to be sold to the highest bidder, and John Smaltz had the highest bid. Later, the land was divided by map among John Smaltz's 9 children upon his death by the court"

One of those 9 children; was Melinda Smaltz, who married Michael Thrash Jr,
eldest son, of Michael Thrash Sr; patriarch of the Thrash family and (as far as it is known), was the very first Thrash to come to Rush Township in 1813, and then moved to Bloom Township bet 1820-1830. Michael Thrash Sr, was one of the very first to be buried at Salem Church on 11 Jun 1863.

Michael Thrash Jr, moved his family from the longtime Thrash homestead bet
1863-1870, and moved to Ridge Township, Wyandot County, Ohio; where they lived the rest of their lives, and both he and Melinda were buried there.

Of Salem Church my grandmother writes:

"It has been said that the first church was built of logs and weatherboard ,
as a partly framed building. This was built in the early 1830's. It was served by Mr John Smaltz, as a lay pastor for several years. The congregation then joined with the United Brethren Denomination, and became part of the Canal Winchester Circuit. Fire destroyed the Church in 1860. Then in 1863, the brick structure was built. It is said that everybody helped to build it. The men laid the bricks, and the women helped by carrying the bricks in their aprons. (Melinda had 8 brothers and sisters, and many people in the neighborhood are descendants; including the Alspachs and Hummels.) After the church was built in 1863, the deed was recorded in the courthouse in 1864."

My grandmother went on to say that there were fights in the courts over the
640 acres Andrew Flick originally bought; and was divided by the courts to his descendants. Evidently this battle over the land, went on for many years. Finally, the family settled their disputes over the land, and then renamed the Church "Salem", which supposedly was to mean "Peace".

Again this information was provided to me by my grandmother Mary M Thrash, in a handwritten document written in 1974. She died two years later, in 1976,
and was one of the very last to be buried at Salem Church, when she was laid
beside her husband John Albert Thrash, who had died four years earlier, in 1972.
Their burial plots are in the very first row, and as I understand it, Salem
Cemetery is now full.
