", Cris, 19y b Germany, carpenter
", Sarah, 13y b Germany

Why the 'unknown'? My guess is that the census taker couldn't understand their Germany language or heavy German accents. There is a John Weller buried in the Old Betzer Cemetery that appears to be the same John Weller in the census, and he is listed as the son of "Samuel and Margaret".

[19062] NOTE: marriage info shows maiden name as 'Dawdle'. I believe the 'Dawdle' is actually 'Doudel' - both husband and wife were unmarried and living in same township in the 1850 census. Margaret Crites, as a wife, shows in 1900 that her father was born in PA and mother in MD. In the 1850 census, these are the states that her supposed parents were born.

NOTE: It would appear at first glance that all the grandchildren listed are
the children of William and Ida; however, Ida shows that she did have 5
children, but none were living. Error? Or children from a deceased child?

NOTE: In "A Biographical Record of Fairfield and Perry Counties, Ohio, S. J. Clarke Pub., Co., 1902, p 360, it lists the children of George Dowdell. Margaret is listed as the wife of Joseph PRICE. Price rhymes somewhat with Crites. Is this an error?

"FAIRCHILD, WILLIAM, farmer, was born in Liberty township,
December 17, 1820. Is a son of Peter and Ann (Smith) Fairchild.
Peter Fairchild came to Ohio at an early day, settling in 1806 on the
farm where his son William now lives, the land at that time being a
dense forest. He cleared one hundred and sixty acres, and spent the
remainder of his life upon this farm. He reared a family of six sons
and five daughters, all of whom are living, and residents of Fairfield
county. Mr. Fairchild died in 1825. His widow survived him until 1871,
when she died in her eighty-eighth year. William, the subject of this
sketch, enjoyed the advantage of a good education. After leaving
public school he entered Greenfield Academy, also Westerville College.
He then taught school until he took charge of the home place. He
purchased one hundred and fifty acres adjoining, where he built a hand-
some residence, said to be the finest in the township. Mr. Fairchild
was married December 3, 1879, to Miss Eliza Burnes. They have one
son, Grant, born March 3, 1881.HISTORY OF FAIRFIELD AND PERRY COUNTIES, OHIO, THEIR PAST AND PRESENT COMPILED BY A. A. GRAHAM, W. H. BEERS & CO. 1883, p 302.

"The next house, corning the alley, flush with the street was originally the home of the Jungkurths. On this same lot was their tombstone factory. Here thousands of markers for thousands of graves of the pioneers were made and erected. There is not a cemetery within a radius of twenty-five miles which cannot show many of these stones. Originally these were cut from the freestone, but these not standing the weather well, in the later years Italian and Vermont marble and southern granite were used, this especcially after the elders had passed away the the business was continued by their sons. There were four of these sons, William, Lewis, Harmon, Theodore, and several daughters. One as having been mentioned, married Vinton Rummel, another, Jane, married John Oyler, a member of the buggy factory firm of Hunter, Oyler and Sheffler. I think there was another who married a Mr. Searles. Lewis served in the War of the Rebellion, but never married. NOTE: the census taker used quote marks in order to bring down the information from a higher column. For instance, if Julia was born in CT, a quote mark was used for the birth sate of Wilburt if he was also born in CT. At first glance, it appears that all the children are born in CT, and all the children list their father born in DE, and mother in CT. If you look closely, though, there are quote marks underneath the state abbreviations for the mother's birth state, as well as her parents birth places. You'd have to see the image for better understanding. In short, I'm sure that all the children were born in Ohio, rather than CT as it looks at first glance.

1940, Nov. 2 - Posse Seek Rape Bandit. All-night search fails to locate man wanted at Lancaster. An all-night search proved futile in an effort to locate an unidentified colored man who raped and robbed a 26-year-old woman of a farm family near Lithopolis. A posse of 75 men and boys was unable to trace the bandit after a half-mile automobile ride he allegedly hitch-hiked with Harry STEVENSON, Lithopolis. STEVENSON reported that the man, who said he was going hunting when he let him out of the car yesterday afternoon, was carrying a 12-gauge double-barreled shotgun and a claw-hammer. Both weapons had been stolen from the farm home, where a child's penny bank was looted after the woman had been attacked in a barn in the presence of her 3-year-old son. The victim who was reported in a nervous condition told authorities that the bandit first asked for some gasoline at the home and later attacked her when she went to feed the chickens. A revolver which the man carried was used to threaten the son's life. [Mansfield News Journal, Mansfield, OH]
