WAR: Served in Civil War 15 Oct 1861 Co H, 68th regiment, OVI, mustered in at
either Providence, Lucas Co OH or Camp Latty, Defiance Co OH. Wounded and
sent to Division Hospital 22 Aug 1864; Present for duty Sep. & Oct 1864,
mustered out by reason of expiration of term on 19 Dec 1864. Served as
Private.
PENSION: #118871 - Oddly, when I requested these records I received another
number also...#170435 which appears to be the same individual; James B.
Barrett. Dates of mustering in and out are same, and the 170435 papers
all have Defiance, Defiance Co OH on them; all written in the month of
Jan 1872. Am not certain why there is a different number on these few
specified papers, but they are definitely referring to the same individual as
the papers mention his gunshot wound to the head.

25 Jan 1889 - "Invalid Pension" paper shows James' address as Waterloo, IN, but it is crossed out and Texas, Henry co OH inserted.

On 25 Jun 1926 the Bureau of Pensions rec'd letter from Jeremiah Collins, Land
Attorney at the Transportation Bldg in Washington DC, to "furnish copy of
declaration for pension filed by James Barrett who served in Co H 68th OVI
during the Civil War."
"GRAND RAPIDS, OHIO AND AREA", July 1978, Grand Rapids Historidal Society, p
119 lists James Barrett as an original member of Bond Post #24, G.A.R. which
was organized 08 Dec and mustered 22 Dec 1879. "Due to reduced ranks, the
encampments gradually repealed their charters and by 1949 they had vanished
from the national scene." On this page (119) there is a large photo with the
caption "A Civil War Outfit reunion" -- no names or date. James may be in that photo. The gentlemen in the photo are quite old.
