Former Elwood woman and two children killed in accident
By MELANIE D. HAYES
A three-vehicle accident in Tennessee claimed the lives of a former Elwood woman, two of her children, and a Tennessee man Oct. 6 after the man drove the wrong way on an interstate.
Marcy Foor Ziegler, a former Elwood resident who lived in Franklin, Ind., died on her 32nd birthday at the scene near Manchester, Tenn., according to a Tennessee Department of Safety accident report.
Ziegler's 13-year-old daughter, Kassie Ziegler, also died at the scene from injuries she sustained in the accident. Devon Ziegler, 8, was taken in a rescue helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville for treatment, but died the following day, said Melissa McDonald, public information officer for the Tennessee Department of Safety.
Marcy Ziegler's other son, Joshua Ziegler, 11, was also injured in the accident and transported to the same hospital by helicopter, McDonald said. His condition was unavailable.
Ziegler is survived by her husband, Tracy Ziegler of Indianapolis, and her father and step-mother, Terry and Karen Foor of Elwood.
Marcy Ziegler was westbound on Interstate 24 while Johnny A. Harris, 53, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., traveled eastbound, the report said.
Harris' 1995 Mazda pickup truck crossed the median and into oncoming traffic, the report read. Harris struck Ziegler's 1997 Mercury Tracer station wagon head-on, killing the mother, her daughter and himself.
A westbound tractor-trailer, driven by Svetoslave Krastev, 28, of Indianapolis, then struck Harris' pickup truck. Krastev was not injured.
Harris and Ziegler were wearing seatbelts, but none of the three children was wearing one, which would have made a difference in the outcome of the accident, the investigating officer wrote in the report.
The Zieglers also had two dogs with them, one which died in the crash. The other suffered a broken leg and is being cared for by a vet in Coffee County, Tenn., until family members can pick him up, McDonald said.
Tennessee state troopers are still investigating the accident to determine what caused Harris to cross the median into oncoming traffic, McDonald said.
"We don't have a full report yet. When we have a serious crash like this, it takes 10 days to two weeks," McDonald said. "We are trying to do an autopsy on the other driver (Harris) to see what caused him to cross the road. It was a very sad, sad day. It was awful."
