1967 - Car Plunges into Creek, Five Persish - Circleville, Ohio - A 36-year-old woman learning how to drive hit the accelerator instead of the brake at an intersection north of here Tuesday night, sending the car plummeting into a rain swollen creek. She and her four children drowned. Her husband, who was teaching her, survived. Vester Phillips, 31, of rural Ashville told authorities he jumpe from the car before it submerged completely in Big Walnut Creek, then tried to rescue his wife and children. But swift current force him to leave the water, he said. Sheriff's deputies recovered the bodies of Ruby Phillips, 36, and sons Gary, 7, and Donald, 3. Bodies of the other two youngsters, Diana 11 and Wendell, 9, could not be found in nearly five hours of searching by scuba divers. Additional divers resumed the search this morning. At one point during the search for bodies, a distraught Phillips, who suffered only minor physical injuries, tried to jump back into the water. He was restrained by sheriff's deputies and onlookers. A shaken Phillips told of climbing back to the road hysterically and trying to flag down four cars that passed. None stopped, he said. Finally, a farmer who lives nearby heard Phillips' shouts. He turned in the first report to authorities. [Athens Messenger, Athens, Ohio, May 17, 1967]

"Frederick Swander was the third son of Jacob and Barbara. He was born in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh Co., PA, Dec. 29, 1780; and was married to Eva Glick, of the same county, who was born Oct. 12, 1781... "With large covered wagons filled with the family, food, furniture and farming implements, they started upon their journey over the mountains. As they were coming down the western slope, Frederick hung his 'ch' [referring to Schwander/Swander] upon one of the laurel bushes that grew in great profusion on many of the outshooting spurs of the Alleghenies. Passing on with a little less name, but no less of Swander, Frederick finally reached his destination near Lythapolis, Fairfield County, Ohio. There he bought land, began to clear up a farm and to rear his large and interesting family of eleven children. There he began to stamp himself upon the community as a man of excellent Christian character and sterling worth. His wife, noble woman that she was in all her relations and duties, proved herself a worthy companion in the toils and trials of pioneer life, until August 20, 1835, when she died aged 54y 10m and 8d. Her bereaved husband survived her until May 5, 1859, when he also fell asleep, aged 78y 4m 6d." Ancestry.com. History of the Swander family. Provo, UT. MyFamily.com, Inc.. 2004.
