"It has ever been unpleasant to me to own property that was not used--not bringing in an income. So this building was a worry to me also. I knew that the Village [Lithopolis] needed industries then as it does today. Creighton Elsea was then unemployed, and so we together conceived the idea of starting a creamery. We formed a partnership to that end. We made contracts for equipment, then more more expensive than now, since it included a system for raising the cream. We had obligated ourselves for some two thousand dollars before remodeling of the building for its new purpose was completed. To my disgust and surprise, Creighton Elsea got cold feet, and insisted that I buy him out. I told him that I would rather sell as the load was too heavy for me to carry alone. He offeredd to sell for a price, offered to take less. He bid below me, and I below him. Again and again this happened, and finally I accepted his offer.", "THE VILLAGE.
