December 23, 1927 News Story and Obituary for Charles H. Foor (Great Uncle of John D. Foor)

HIS INJURIES PROVE FATAL

Charles H. Foor, Struck by Auto Saturday, Dies at Hospital

(Sent to The Times from a Charleston, SC Paper)

Charles H. Foor, Chef Steward of the Francis Marion Hotel and brother of William Foor, head of the hotel syndicate, succumbed Tuesday morning about 10 o'clock to injuries received when he was struck by an automobile on Saturday night.
Mr. Foor, who was in his 62nd year, was crossing Meeting Street at Charlotte when a machine driven by Charles Miller, No. 97 Columbus Street, coming south on Meeting Street, struck him. Mr. Miller stopped immediately and conveyed Mr. Foor to Roper Hospital, where he died Tuesday of internal injuries. The motorist made a report to the police of the accident that occurred during a heavy downpour of rain.
Mr. Foor came to Charleston about 14 months ago and was employed at the Francis Marion Hotel. He had been in hotel work many years, and W.O. Christian, manager of the hostelry, reports he was a man of much ability and pleasing personality.
William Foor, an older brother, who is President of the Southeastern Hotel Company, operators of the Francis Marion and other hotels of this section, but now located at Brooklyn at one of his hotels, arrived in Charleston Tuesday afternoon to take charge of the funeral arrangements. The remains are to be taken to Canal Winchester, Ohio, his home city, for interment. An inquest is to be conducted by coroner MD O'Donnell at J.M. Connelley's Tuesday afternoon.
Mr. Foor is also survived by three other brothers, E. Richard Foor, of Spartansburg, who arrived in the city on learning of the accident; Hearl E. Foor, of Canal Winchester, Ohio, and Chester Foor, of New Orleans. There are also two sisters, Mrs. Reuben Boyd and Mrs. Thomas Badger.
Mr. Foor was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Red Men and several hotel organizations. His death has cast a gloom over the personnel of the Francis Marion Hotel, where he was held in high esteem and was a most popular member of the staff.
Charles H. son of Sylvester and Sarah Foor was born May 27, 1866, died December 6, 1927, aged 61 years, 6 months and 10 days.
He was born in Fairfield County, shortly after moved to Canal Winchester where he lived until manhood.
He married Ella Anderson of Columbus and to this union were born four children. His wife and two children preceded him in death.

OBIT: Lithopolis Man Dies Sunday P.M. Lafayette SMITH, 76y years of age, passed away at his home in Lithopolis at 8 o'clock Sunday evening following a brief illness. Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Tilla Smith, two daughters, Mrs. May BOWMAN, of Lithopolis, and Mrs. Ella WEIDNER of Royalton; five sons, Martin and Stephen of Lithopolis, Monroe of Canal Winchester, Ray of Illinois, and Roy of Ashville. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Lithopolis M. E. Church. Interment will be made in Lithopolis cemetery under the direction of Weiser and Kistler, morticians of that place. LANCASTER DAILY GAZETTE, Lancaster, Ohio, May 6, 1929, p 7.

Lancaster Eagle-Gazette

Abstract: Death: 5 May 1929, age 76. Lafayette A. Smith, son of Peter and Nancy Ann Smith was born on May 25, 1852 near Lithopolis, Ohio and died on May 5, 1929, at his home in Lithopolis, Ohio, at the age of 76 years, 11 months, and 10 days. He was united in marriage December 1, 1878 to Pella Esther Oyler, of Lithopolis, Ohio. To this union nine children were born: Martin, Steve and Mrs. May Bowman of Lithopolis, Monroe of Canal Winchester, Ray of Zalzell, Illinois, Leroy of Ashville, and Mrs. Ella Weidner of Royalton, and two infant sons who preceded the father to the great beyond. He was also preceded in death by his father, mother, two sisters and five grandchildren. He leaves to mourn their loss, a loving wife, one sister, Mrs. Charley Miller of Columbus, two brothers, Peter of Centerberg, and John of Reynoldsburg, twenty-five grandchildren, one great grand-daughter, besides the children and a host of other relatives and friends. This father has welcomed his children one by one, into his earthly home and now has been taken from them for a little while only to be ready to welcome them one by one, into a brighter and happier home where there is no suffering or parting. he was baptised in infancy and in his early life he united with the M.E. Church of Lithopolis, to which he remained a faithful member until his Maker saw fit to answer for him the question--What is death? What is death? No more to love or hopes or fear, To join the great equality; All, all alike are humbled there. The mighty grave wraps lord and slave; Not pride nor poverty dares Come within refuge house. "What means my trembling heart, To be thus shy of death." My life and I shan't part Though I resign my breath. Then welcome, harmless grave! By thee to heaven I'll go; My Lord, his death shall save Me from the flames below."
Card of Thanks We wish to thank all who have aided us during the death and burial of our beloved husband and father. We especially thank the minister and singers and those who gave floral tributes and Mr. Kistler, the undertaker; the remembrance of your loving sympathy and helpfulness will endure during the lonely days to come and help us to bear our great sorrow. Mrs. pella Smith and Children. Funeral services were held in Lithopolis M.E. Church, May 8, at 2 p.m. by Rev. Bailey. Burial in Lithopolis cemetery.

Death certificate image. Lafayette A. Smith died Lithopolis, Fairfield Co., Ohio, May 5, 1929 aged 76y 11m 10d, married to Pella E. Smith. Shoemaker. Born May 25, 1852 Bloom to Peter L. Smith b PA and Nancy Foor b OH. Buried May 8 in Lithopolis.
