1948 - Two young men, both fathers of large families, appeared before the
court to plead guilty to various charges of burglary and larceny. Edward
William Foor and Raymond Lee Singer of Hopewell twp., both of whom have
extensive past records of law violations, were each sentenced to a total of 3
to 6 years in the Western Penitentiary. Officer Finnan told the court that on Nov. 7, 1947, it was reported to the state police that a tool shanty owned by Oscar Scitticatt in Broad top had been burglarizzed. A search of the homes of the defendents unearthed the tools. In addition, defendants admitted several other cases of taking equipment from abandoned mines, including the Garlick mine. The officer said that Foor, after his apprehension, had been helpful in breaking up a ring of thieves in the Broad Top area. Probation Officer Aldstadt told the court that Foor had served four terms of varying lengths in the industrial school and western pen. between 1927 and 1935, but appeared to have gone straight since then. The court told the defendants that they might have made themselves eligible for life terms in prison and that they could be sent up for at least 50 years. However, he pointed out that their large families would become a charge on Bedford county and no end would be served by a protracted peniteniary sentence. [Bedford Gazette, Bedford, PA., Feb.

After the death of her first husband our subject's mother married David Hall and moved to Pickaway County, Ohio, where young Benjamin was reared. Our subject was united in marriage December 3, 1840, with Miss Sarah Searfoss, and they came to Marion Township, this county, in the following February, bought a new farm and began the work of clearing it up and developing it. Mr. Kistler has added to his property until he now owns 240 acres of fertile and well improved land. To Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Kistler have been born seven children: the first child died in infancy; David, married to Miss Nancy Ann Brinner (he died June 26,1878); Henry; Benjamin, Jr., now in Henry County, Ohio; Mrs. Clarinda Anderson; John and William. DOB: From Judy Beaty via June 2002 email. She said her source was Anita Siler of Stafford, TX. Vanessa Lou was the d/o Charles F. and Vallie Oliva Siler. She doesn't know the date of marriage to "Wade Foor". In trying to match up the correct Wade Foor, I (Shelly) replied to her with the following: "The closest match I can find is a Wade Dewey Foor, Sr., b 24 Jul 1898 in Meade Co., KY who married in 1923 to Ann McGregor Kiper. He died in Tulsa in 1946 -- Vanessa is listed as a widow in 1920, though, so it can't be the right Wade. This Wade seemed to fit, though, as there are very few FOORs who made the journey out west during that time period, and to have a Wade Foor b in KY (granddaughter Mary Lou in the above census shows her father was b in KY) seems more than coincidental." Perhaps they got a divorce; often women preferred to say they were widowed since divorce was not a good thing to be back then.

1860 - A LITTLE BOY SHOOTS HIS BROTHER. on Friday afternoon, while two little sons of Rev. J. S. Wise, Methodist minister at Lithopolis, about fifteen miles from Columbus, were at play together, the elder took a loaded shot gun which he pointed at his brother, making at the same time some playful demand with which the latter refused to comply. He thereupon, utterly unconscious that the gun was loaded, pulled the trigger. The charge took effect in the victim's head, blowing off the top of his skull and killing him instantly. [The Portsmouth Times, Portsmouth, Ohio, March 3, 1860]
2nd article - same newspaper and date:
1860 - Shocking Casualty. A Boy Eleven Years Old Shoots His Brother's Head Off. It is seldom that we are called upon to chronicle a more lamentable or heart-rending affair than the following: Saturday afternoon, two sons of Re.v J. S. Weize, at Lithopolis, Fairfield County, were playing in a room of their father's house, when one of them, eleven years old, took up a gun which was standing in the corner and playfully remarked to his brother, six years old, that he would shoot him, and leveling the gun, fired away, blowing the whole half of the little fellow's head off, killing him instantly. The older brother did not dream of there being a load in the gun, only raising and leveling it in sport; but it was heavily charged with shot, and the aim was too true. Mr. Weize was in Columbus at the time of the accidental fratracide, but a messenger was sent for him and met him at Shadeville, returning home, when the awful news was imparted. Mrs. Weize was nealry frantic with her great grief, and the surviving brother will not be consoled. The gun was kept loaded to shoot pigeons, as they flew over the village in large numbers, and either the fact should known to the boys, or the gun put out of their reach. -- O.S. Journal. He m. second June 7, 1870, Emma Louisa Troxell (b July 4, 1835; d March 8, 1896). He was one of the oldest active ministers of the Reformed church. He was a man of more than ordinary ability, and possessed a very large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was born in Lancaster, Ohio. His father, Rev. George Weisz, was the pastor in charge for forty years of the Lancaster and Lithopolis churches in Fairfield Co., Ohio. Here Israel received his early educational training; and at Mercersburg, PA., he completed his preparation for the gospel ministry. He frequently recounted pleasant college day experiences when associated in student life with Revs. Moses Kieffer, D. D., George W. Welker, D. D., and Aaron Warner, D. D. In 1843 he entered the ministry as pastor of the Clearspring, Maryland, charge, and remained their three years, teaching a select school in connection with his ministerial charge. In 1847, Dr. Weisz accepted a call to Newville, PA., '47 and '49. Thence he returned to his native place in Ohio, where for ten years he served the field once occupied by his honored father for so long a period.
"Coming back to Pennsylvania in 1859, he labored in the Nittany Valley charge for two years. In 1861 the Reverend removed to Mifflinburg, Union county, where he worked until the close of the War. In Nov. 1865, he located in Williamsport, PA., and in '68 he entered the Mount Bethel charge, Northampton Co., PA., where in the following year he drank the bitter cup of affliction in the bereavement of his precious helpmeet who had shared the burdens and trials of his ministry for over 50 years. One year later he wedded Emma Louisa Troxel, of Stonechurch, Northampton county." He had 12 ch by first wife and 2 by second.
