Pension Claim of Delilah Foor, widow of Jesse W. FOOR, Private Co C 10th Ohio C cavalry - Tower Hill, Shelby Co Illinois, "I am a sister of the above named
Delilah FOOR whose maiden name was Swanders and I knew her and her husband, the said soldier, Jesse W. FOOR, before they were married to each other when they were young people in Ohio. I have known both of them all their lives. That they were married in Fairfield county, Ohio, on or about Christmas Day 1862, just at the time when he was leaving to go into the army. Neither one of them had been previously married, but both were single when they were united in marriage and there was no reason why they could not be married to each other. During all their married life at no time they were never separated or divorced but always lived together as husband and wife. Shortly after the war was over they moved to Shelby county, IL, as I did. They were living together in Shelby county when he died on or about May 20, 1916. Since his death she has not remarried, but is still his widow. I know these facts because of personal acquaintance with the parties all these years", signed "X" (her mark), Leah RIEGEL, aged 73 years.
MARRIAGE: Vol #2, p 284, Fairfield Co OH, married 25 Dec 1862 by John
MOREHART, JP.
Lived for a couple years 'after the war' in Ohio, then moved to Shelby Co, IL
where he lived the remainder of his life with his wife and children.
OCCUPATION: death record lists occupation as farmer
OBIT:
J. W. Foor, a respected resident of Shelby county for the past 44 years, died
at 10:30 o'clock Saturday forenoon at his home in the southwest part of Rose
township after an extended illness from heart trouble. For several days he had
been in a critical state, and his death was anticipated.
Mr. Foor was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, June 20, 1845 and was married
there to Miss Delilah Swander in 1862. Ten years later they came to Shelby
county, settling in Cold Spring township, and from that time to the death of
Mr. Foor Saturday they had resided in the vicinity of their first Shelby county home. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Foor. Of these, one son died in infancey, and the survivors are namely: Mrs. H. M. Tallman, Shelbyville, Mrs.
Sadie Cullumber, Mrs. Lula Sibett, Ervin Foor, Calvin Foor, Fred Foor,
Lawrence Foor, Clinton Foor and Wiley Foor, all living within a radius of 8
miles of the home in the southwest part of Rose township. In addition to
these, and his faithful wife, Mr. Foor is survived by one brother, Joseph Foor, of Franklin county, Ohio, who with his wife was with his brother at the time of the latter's death, and six sisters. One of the sisters is Mrs. David Brownback of Tower Hill, and the other 5 are residents of Ohio.
Mr. Foor was an industrious and successful farmer, and to a marked degree held the confidence and esteem of his fellmen. From his childhood he lived a
faithful christian life, and from the age of seventeen years until his death
was a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
The funeral of Mr. Foor will be held from the family residence at 10 o'clock
Monday forenoon, with burial in Glenwood cemetery, this city.
