John Dobson
Historical and Biographical Record of Black Hawk County, Iowa. Chicago:
Inter-State Pub. Co., 1886.
John Dobson, one of the pioneers of East Waterloo Township, was born on a farm in Ireland, January 8, 1810. At the age of twenty-two years he left his native country and immigrated to America landing at Quebec. He remained near Lake Champlain nearly four years, when he came to Ohio, locating in Fairfield County, where he followed agricultural pursuits about fifteen years. He then spent two years in Montgomery County, Indiana, and in July, 1854, he removed with his family to Black Hawk County, Iowa, and at once settled on his present farm, which at that time was unbroken prairie. He made a tent of his wagon cover in which his family lived till he had built his log house, and commenced to improve his farm. After living in his log house nine years he built a better residence, where he still lives. His first purchase was eighty acres of prairie and twenty-three acres of timbered land, and by his untiring industry and economy he was enabled to add to his original purchase till he owned 300 acres. He has at present 183 acres of finely cultivated land, and his barns and outbuildings are well arranged. He was married before leaving Ireland to Miss Ann Webster, by whom he had four children, of whom three are yet living-Thomas, William and Elizabeth, wife of E.P. Streeter. Mr. Dobson married for his second wife Miss Emily Good, a native of Tennessee, and to this union have been born seven children-Amos, Alice, John, Wesley, Abram, Eunice and Francis. John is at home with his parents and has the management of the farm. The two younger brothers are at school. Mr. Dobson, when he landed in America, had but one sovereign in his pocket, but with owing to his good management and temperate habits he is to-day comfortably settled in life. In politics Mr. Dobson affiliates with the Republican party.
NOTE: According to the bio, the Dobson family came to Montgomery Co., IN around 1853. Sometime around then it appears that John Dobson and his wife, Margaret nee Coffman, apparently got a divorce. Although the bio states he then went to IA in 1854, it was probably after Feb. 1855 which is when he married Emily Good in Montgomery Co., IN. Margaret (Coffman) Tomlinson Dobson remains in Montgomery Co., IN near her Tomlinson children and although she appears as a DOBSON in censuses, her tombstone apparently lists her name as TOMLINSON.

"John Fuhr's will, like those of Johann [his father] and Leonard [brother] was written in German script. Translation of this will revealed that all his possessions 'both landed and movable' were to go to his wife Maria Magdelena. A list of John's possessions were prepared and the will executed in August 1819. A caveat was placed against the will on August 11, 1819. This was countermanded on Sept. 2, 1819, and the will's final execution occurred Sept. 10, 1819." [W. Eugene Foor, 1992]
In his brother Leonard's will dated 23 Jul 1776, Northampton Co., PA, it mentioned that his brother John Fuhr was to receive from his estate 'only five schillings and no more'.
There must've been some family squabbling going on, as this John as well as John Schad placed a type of caveat against his father's will. This may be why his brother Leonard wanted him to have very little of his own estate.
WILL: Will executed in Aug, 1819.
Court on 16 June 1789
Guardians for minor grandchildren of John Shaad, Whitehall Township (had will which bequeathed money to the wife of the petitioner):
petitioner: John Fuhr, on behalf of his minor children
daughter: Mary Margaret, wife of John Fuhr, the petitioner
grandchildren, children of the daughter Mary Margaret:
John Fuhr, age 18
Catharine Fuhr, age 16
Barbara Fuhr, age 15
Elizabeth Fuhr, age 10
guardian: for 3 older children John Fuhr, their father, as long as he
provided security for Elizabeth-John Bear, Whitehall Township
John is listed as the eldest son in his father's records. See notes on father.
NOTE: There is a Catharina Elizabeth FUHR, d/o Johannes and Maria Margreth who was b 06 Dec 1776, baptised on the 12th and died on the 13th. Sponsor was Catharina Elisabth SHAD. "Records of Egypt Reformed Church, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, 1734-1807" From Pennsylvania Archives, Sixth Series, Volume 6, as seen online at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/3955/lehegypt.htm
"Information in the History of Lehigh County leaves little doubt that John Guhr [sic], Johann Leonhart Fuhr's son, was married to Mary Magaretha, presumably the oldest child of Johanns Schad. Their children were: John born 1771; Catharine born 1773; Barbara born 1774; Catharine Elizabeth born December 6, 1776 (died December 13, 1776), Elizabeth born 1779; Anna Marie born April 16, 1782, and Maria Magaretha born Aug. 30, 1784.
"Differences in the name of John (Johann) Fuhr's wife at the time of her marriage (Mary Magaretha), during the time of her child brearing years (Maria Margareth), and the time John's will was written (Maria Magdalena) remains unexplained. Nevertheless, one needs only to examine the signature of John (Johann) Fuhr as it appeared in the contract with benjamin Chass at the time of his father's death (1773) and the signature of his own will (1819) to recognize they were produced by the same individual".
