DOB/DOD/FATHER: HISTORY OF FAIRFIELD AND PERRY COUNTIES, OHIO, THEIR PAST AND PRESENT, Compiled BY A. A. Graham, W. H. BEERS & CO. 1883, p 201. "In the spring of 1800, three men, names not remembered, came
from near Chillicothe and broke ground on the prairie in section number
four, planted corn, and then returned home. They came back in
due time and tended their corn twice. The next fall one of these men
sold his share to Horatio Clark, receiving a horse in payment. The
other two likewise disposed of their shares to parties not now
remembered. In November of the same year. Wilkinson Lane, of Huntington
county, Tennessee, settled on section eight, and was succeeded in
the month of June following by Thomas Cole, who had entered the
section. The family were never troubled by the Indians. In a few years
200

Mr. Cole built a school-house on his land, hired a teacher, Abraham
Cole, for eight dollars a month, and then invited all who wished to send
their children and pay a pro rata share or not, as they could or would.
In those days school hours were from "sun to sun," or as soon as
scholars arrived. On one occasion Broad Cole, son of Thomas Cole,
born in 1802, and recently deceased, thought of beating the master at
school some day, and after a few failures to do so, left home one morning
about daybreak, but on arriving at the school-house he was greeted
with a good fire, and found the master, a Mr. Smith, banking up earth
against the school-house, to protect it against cold."

1929 - Tower Hill Woman Killed By Train. Mrs. Barbara Lane, 85, an old resident of Tower Hill, was fatally injured on the B&O trakcs while walking on the railroad near her home at 8:30 Friday morning. She was struck by the southbound B & O train. She was placed in a caboose attached to a freight engine and rushed to Pana where she died in the Huber Hospital at 10:45. She leaves several children, among whome are Miss Cora Lane and Mrs. Will Shanks of Tower Hill. The inquest will be held at the Kirkpatrick mortuary Friday afternoon. [Decatur Daily Review, Decatur, IL, Aug. 30, 1929]

1929 - Hold Inquest for Mrs. Lane. Coroner A. D. Payton of Taylorville Saturday concluded an inquest on the body of Mrs. Barbara Ellen Lane, 85, who died at the Huber Memorial hospital in this city after having been fatally injured by the engine of a northwest bound freight on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad at Tower Hill, seven miles east of Pana. The jury was composed of Albert Frankenfield foreman, Harry Datton, clerk, George E. Endris, David White, Charles Wilson, and Charles Gaffner. Witnesses were conductor Herman Boyd and engineer John Page of the train and Dr. H. C. Corley who attended the aged woman. A verdict of accidental death as the result of being struck by the engine of a B&O freight train at Tower Hill was returned. Evidence was that mrs. Lane had been to a grocery store about 8 o'clock in Tower Hill and was enroute home. She had been walking on the tracks of the railroad and her attention had been called to the approaching train by the station agent at Tower Hill. She left the tracks upon his admonition, only to step right back on them again in front of the slowly moving train. The view of the tracks and all crossings at the place where the accident happened it was shown, were clear for the woman and the enginemen. The accident happened at 8:30 o'clock and Mrs. Lane died at the Huber Memorial hospital in Pana at 10:45.

Mrs. Lane was the widow of John Lane who was killed by a Baltimore and Ohio train, midway between Pana and Tower Hill, about 25 years ago. She had lived in Tower Hill for over 50 years. She is survived by two daughters, Miss Cora Lane and Mrs. Will Shanks of Tower Hill, and three sons, Walter, Arthur and Clarence Lane of Tower Hill. She was born Aug. 7, 1844, being 85 years old. Funeral Services were at the Tower Hill Presbyterian church at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon and burial followed in the Tower Hill cemetery. [Decatur Evening Herald, Decatur, IL, Sep. 3, 1929]

DOD/POD: name listed as Barbra Ellen Lane, cert 110269, died Aug. 30, 1929 in Pana Twp., Christian Co., IL; Illinois Statewide Archives; online.
