[4052] DOB/POB/DOM/POM: From records of Judith Flinn via internet email, March 2001. "There is currently some controversy whether Anna Magdalena's Maiden name was Ohlinger or Bradstaetter. Reinhardt was buried in St Paul's Cemetery, Hamburg, Berks Co., PA. He emigrated to America 11 Sept 1738, aboard the ship "Robert and Alice". He was a blacksmith in Froechen, Germany before 1736. He was a Calvinist."

"Johannes Alspach was the son of Reinhard Alspach and Anna Magdalena Brandstaetter, both born in, or near, Thaleischweiler, Germany. According to the church records, Reinhard was a "hofschnied" or farrier. His father was a "schmied" or blacksmith. After their marriage they sailed for America. Their first child was born in Germany, all the rest were born in this country. There were several Reinhard Alspachs and several Anna Magdalena Brandstaetter, and to make it even more confusing, they often married. However, several years separate each couple. The church records of Thaleischweiler say the children of another Reinhard Alspach and Anna Magdalena Brandstaetter were born there, and many believe these to be our Reinhard and Anna Magdalena's children. This adds to the confusion. John Alspach served in the Revolutionary War." From Arlene Zoll McLennan of Plymouth, Michigan, March 2001.

The below was posted by Arlene McLennan in June of 2001 to the GenConnect message boards:

In the "Register zu den evangelisch-lutherischen Kirchenbuchern der Pfarrei
Thaleischweiler 1720-1798" (Evangelical-Lutheran Church records of the
church at Thaleischweiler) there is this entry:

"Alspach, Reinhardt, from Froeschen, married at Thaleischweiler, 29.11.1737,
Anna Magdalena Brandstaetter, whom he had impregnated. Therefore, they
were obliged to leave the country after their marriage and then went to
America."

In a book commemorating 300 years of Thaleischweiler history this story
appears as part of the village history.

Alspach name means "eel brook". Besides Alspach, alternate spellings include
Alspaugh, Allspach, Alschbach, etc.

Reinhardt Alspach (Reynhart Alspach), his wife Anna Magdalena (Brandstetter)
Alspach, their son, Georg, Reinhardt's brother Mathews (Matthais), and
Anna Magdalena's brother, Jacob Brandstetter (Bransteder) emigrated to
America on the ship "Robert and Alice" of Dublin. They were qualified on
September 11, 1738. Qualified means they were obligated to swear allegiance
to England before they could disembark. There were 95 men aboard the "Robert
and Alice". Commander was Walter Goodman. They set sail from Rotterdam,
Netherlands.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF REINHARDT ALSPACH

This date the 9th January 1762

I, Reinhardt Alschbach (Alspach) have in my good understanding caused two
men to come to me to hear that which shall be required after my death when
God the Lord shall demand me from this world.

1. This is my will that my two oldest sons have the plantation together,
to wit George and Heinrich together with the appurtenances and all what
I have under my hands together with the winter grain, waggon, Horses, Cattle,
Sheep, with all the Household goods to wit: the above mentioned two oldest
sons shall pay out to the remaining children, each twenty pounds, this
money as it is lawful in Pennsylvania. But the above two mentioned sons
shall pay the debts which the father yet owes and on the contrary they
shall also receive what is due the father in any outstanding loans debts
or interest to have and to hold as their own.

And when the debts are paid so shall the payments touching the two sons
have four years time to be paid before the payments begin-------.

Afterward the eldest child shall have his 20 pounds and so forth till to
the youngest child.

2. This is my will that they to wit the two sons shall give the mother
for her maintenance as follows. First they shall give her twenty bushels
of rye and ten bushels of wheat, and this every year. More, one fat hog
weighing 100 pounds and 50 pounds of beef. And carry the grain to the mill
and fetch the meal again. More, they shall sow for the mother one half
acre flax where they sow theirs in good land. And when she is old and cannot
break the flax, then the two sons shall dress the flax fit for spinning.
More, the mother shall have the garden next the house and they shall dung
and make it. More, they shall winter a cow for the mother---she shall take
the choice every spring. More, they shall give the mother every year two
pounds in money and six pounds of good wool, 1 bushel of salt and one half
pound of pepper, one half pound of alspice. More, four bushels of buckwheat.
More, the mother shall have her right in the house and if they cannot live
together they shall build her a new house and an iron stove therein, and
they must get firewood free at the house and if she wants to ride at any
time they must give her a saddle horse. And if this shall be all truly
and rightly held it shall be inviolable and remain which I verify within
and seal with my seal.

[21575] NAME/DOB/DOD/POBurial: "Cemeteries of Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH", Fairfield County Gen. Soc., Chapter OGS, 1996, p 68. Name listed as David A. Dennison. Years only 1874-1918.

NOTE: Both David and his brother Homer have remarkable changes in their ages on census records. David's cemetery tombstone shows his birth year as 1874, yet in the 1880 census he's listed as only being 2 rather than 6. The age of 2 is probably much more accurate then his ages in later censuses -- same as his brother who got younger by 5 years. It appears that David could not read or write since he signed his registration with an "X". As with Homer, it would be interesting to see what date of birth is listed in probate records for him. Also, their brother Charlie who in 1900 is listed with the mother and their step father as 20 being born Dec 1879, would've shown up on the 1880 census with them if that were the case. Charlie's draft registration card shows him born Dec. 4, 1877. That date of birth is actually the more likely birth of David, who was also born Dec. 4th. I have researched for 25 years now, and my guess is that this family was not very literate, nor very 'close', and birthdates were not recorded or remembered.

1918 - draft registration card lists name as David Arthur Dennison of RFD #1 Carroll, Fairfield Co., Ohio, age 43, born Dec. 4, 1874, tall height, slender build, dark eyes, grayish hair, farmer in Carroll, Fairfield Co., OH; neares relative is Elizabeth Vorhees of same address, mother. For his signature he put his "X" mark. A notation says that "registrant said that he really had no occupation but owned a Carroll farm".

"Fairfield County Wills and Estate Abstracts, Cases 1-500", Fairfield County Gen. Society, April 1996, p 228... Case @261 is the estate of Abraham HARRIS of Bloom Twp. Will written 21 Apr 1819 and filed in 1819 Will Book 2, p 89. Heirs are wife Susanna, oldest son Abraham, son Philamon, daughter Nancy (Huges?), daughters Mary Clymer, Sally Needels, Susanna Clymer.

NOTE: Info submitted to Church of the Latter Day Saints website at www.familysearch.com by Grace PAINTER, 3501 Hwy 95N #73, Lake Havasu City, Arizona, 86404, shows an Abraham Harris with the EXACT same dates of birth and death, except both locations for death/birth are shown as being in Kent Co., DE. She shows he's the son of William HARRIS and Hannah NEEDLES and that he married Susannah CUBBAGE. This is an obvious error in location of death. Other submissions show Abraham dying in Fairfield Co., Ohio.

Listed as deceased in the following text:

"Upon first coming to this state our subject [Abraham Ordel] spent two years in Edwards and Tazewell Counties, then, returning to Ohio, was married in Fairfield County to Miss Mary J. Hoshor, who was born there Feb. 8, 1833. Her parents were George and Mary (Litzenberger) Hoshor, natives of Pennsylvania, but of Germany ancestry. They removed to Ohio before their marriage, their wedding also taking place in Fairfield county. The father was born in 1800, followed farming all his life, and departed hence in 1882. The mother is yet living in Ohio. Mrs. O. was reared in her Native county and remained with her parents until her marriage. Of her union with our subject there were born nine children, two of whom, M. Catherine and Edward, are deceased. Those living are Ida B., and George, married, and John, Emma E., William H., Samuel and Franklin at home. After the marriage of our subject he settled with his wife upon a farm in Fairfield County, Ohio, where they remained until their removal to this State. They became residents of Champaign County in 1871, operating on rented land in Philo Township two years before the purchase of their present homestead. Both are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of Raymond Township, of which Mr. O. is Trustee." "Portrait and Biographical Album of Champaign Co., IL", Chapman Bros., Chicago, 1887, p 302.

[4575] DOB/POBurial/DOD: "Cemeteries of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH",
Fairfield Co., Ohio, Chapter OGS, 1996, p 285. NOTE: This hubsand and wife
died on same day. Dob shown as 31 Jan 1806, and died the same day as husband William H., "Notestine". (p 285). On page 388 is a transcription done in 1942 that shows Maria J. Notestine died July 15, 1897, aged 73y 4m 26d. This makes more sense since Mary J. is shown as a widow in 1880 census. DOB figured from age at death.

Maiden Name: From the Family Treemaker website of Susan K. Muglich, Strongsville, OH; muglich@aol.com

DOM/MAIDEN NAME: From the gedcom of Ginny McSween on ancestry.com, May 2002.

NOTE: in the 1850 census, the preceding family was that of a widowed Rosanna Swager or Swayer, 48y b PA. William and his wife named a child Rosanna. Possible relation to the Swayer/Swager's, or else this is the spelling that has evolved from the "Swigert" other people have noted as Maria's maiden name.
