HIS SISTER WAS MURDERED - Fort Wayne Man Hears Bad News. Her Body Found in a Well and Her Husband Arrested on Suspicion of Having Murdered Her -- Brother is a Local Workman. Mr. Louis Frey of Marion Street was summoned to Zanesville, O., last night, by a telegram informing him that his sister had been murdered. He will leave early this morning. The alleged murder was committed at Lithopolis, a small village near Columbus, and the news of the crime received here was in the following telegram to the Journal-Gazette: Columbus, O., Dec. 18 - Charles F. Wheeler was arrested today at Lithopolis, near Lancaster, on the finding of the dead body of his wife in a well on the Wheeler farm. The arrest was made by T. E. Foster, formerly a detective here and Joe Walker, and ex-constable of this county. The woman was not seen by any of the neighbors after Friday. Her body was found yesterday in the well, clothed in her night-dress, and there were no marks of violence. Some years ago Wheeler owned a small pump factory in Columbus. In 1900 his first wife, Alice, secured a divorce from him and is now living in Cleveland. In March 1901, Wheeler married Mrs. Ella Fraye, a widow thirty-five years old, and moved to a farm near Lithopolis, and on a recent visit to E. Locknit in this city, Mr. Wheeler followed his wife and upbraided her, whereupon Mr. Locknit gave him a sound thrashing. Wheeler, on being arrested, was taken to Lithopolis, and probably will be taken to Lancaster. Mr. Frey is a cigarmaker employed in the Hazzard factory on East Main Street. [Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dec. 19, 1902]

Lancaster, O. - Mrs. Charles Wheeler was murdered at Lithopolis last night. Her body was discovered this morning and her husband placed under arrest. A heavy guard surrounds the lock-up at that place, where great excitement prevails and lynching is treatened. Deputy Sheriff Callahan and Coroner Cly left here fore the scene. Wheeler is a well known Columbus pump manufacturer and recently sued his wife for an alleged dept of $700 which is the supposed reason for the crime. The prisoner will be brought here and placed in jail. [Fort Wayne News, Fort Wayne, IN, Dec. 17, 1902]
AFRAID That She Would Be Killed - People Tell of Woman's Fright. Chas. Wheeler said to have Brandished Knife. The Coroner's Examination Conducted at Lancaster -- Verdict to be Rendered Today - Dead Woman's Relatives. Lancaster, O., Dec. 20 - The inquest into the death of the wife of Charles Wheeler of Lithopolis, was held here Friday. The first witness was S. W. Blackwood, from whom Wheeler bought his farm. He lives in Columbus. He testified that on Dec. [14?], Wheeler again came into his store in Columbus and said: "I've got them." and showed the witness two certificates of deposit for $300 each, two of $200 each and two of $1,000, all on banks in Columbus. He also displayed a bank book in Ella Wheeler's name on the Columbus Savings Bank showing a balance of about $200. Wheeler also displayed a bunch of keys and said: "I found the keys and unlocked the trunks and drawer and found these papers and bank book." Witness said he told Wheeler to "take the papers back and put them where he got them". At that time Wheeler made no inquiry about his wife.
He said that three weeks ago, on the farm where Wheeler came to him and said, "My God, Mr. Blackwood, my wife thinks I am going to kill her. I was cutting up a hog this morning that I killed last night and she abused me so that I told her I would cut my throat." Blackwood testified that an hour later she came to him and and told him that "Charlie tried to kill her with a butcher knife that morning." Blackwood related that she said to him that her husband had broken in a door and gone after her with a knife in his hand. She said that she wanted to stay that night in the tenant house in Blackwood's farm, as she was afraid her husband would kill her. Blackwood would not allow it.
Mrs. Glick testified that Mrs. Wheeler said she was going to leave her husband, as she could not get along with him.
Henry May, a neighbor, said that Mrs. Wheeler asked to stay at their house the night following the day of the butchering in the Wheeler home as she was afraid of her husband. He said Mrs. Wheeler was in the habit of going away for a week or 10 days at a time. He had heard Wheeler say that at times when his wife was away he would sit up all night in the kitchen.
Art Heller of Lithopolis said that Wheeler had talked to him in Wilson's saloon on Tuesday night, December 2. Wheeler said hs wife was gone and he did not know where to look for her. He supposed that she was up in that "hell hole" where he found her the last time.
Attorney L. C. Jones of Columbus filed an application for Mrs. Sophia Waters, a sister of the dead woman, to be appointed administratrix. The estate is valued at $2,300, $1,000 of which is in realty. There are other sisters and three brothers of the deceased who will also probably have something to say about the appointment of the administrator. They are Mrs. Mayme Brown of Peoria, IL., Louis Frey of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Gus Frey of Pittsburg; Conrad Frey of Zanesville. The coroner will render a verdict today. [The Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, Dec. 20, 1902]
MURDER TRIAL at Lancaster Begun - An Army of Witnesses to be Examined in Wheeler Case. Lancaster, O., April 28 -- the trial of Charles F. Wheeler, formerly of Columbus, under inductment for murdering his wife, Ella Wheeler, on a farm near Lithopolis, Fairfield county, is now under way. A jury is now being secured. The body of Mrs. Wheeler was discovered in a well on the farm, 15 days after her disappearance last November. Her husband was immediately arrested for the crime, and indicted by the grand jury in January. Hon. M. A. Daughtery, George E. Martin of this city, and Attorneys Lawe and Lawe of Canal Winchester appeared for Wheeler, and Prosecuting Attorney Frank Acton is assisted by Attorneys Thomas H. Dolson and W. T. McCleuaghan of this city. The attornesy for the defense are taking advantage of every technicality to delay proceedings and the trial will probably be long drawn out. There is an army of witnesses to be examined. [Newark Advocate, Newark, Ohio, April 28, 1903]
1903 - Wheeler Found Guilty. Lancaster, O. May 5. After being out three and one half hours the jury in the Wheeler case returned a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree. Mercy was asked which means life imprisonment. Wheeler received the verdict without flinching. A new trial will probably be asked. Charles Wheeler was arrest several months ago charged with murdering his wife whose body was found in a well. [Sandusky Evening Star, Sandusky, Ohio, May 5, 1903]
