He settled in Section 22, in a rude log cabin, without door or window, and began life in the wilderness. Eagle Twp. - George W. Alspach. "In the latter part of April, 1834, Mr. Alspach, to use his own language, 'landed in Hancock County, in Eagle township, at the house of John Powell.' He at once engaged to work for Mr. Powell at $13 per month. In the fall of the same year he went back to his home in Fairfield county, but soon returned, and went to work for Jacob Zoll. He says, however, 'that he took time to select a lot of land, and go to the land office to enter it, but was too late, as it had already been taken up'. After returning to the township, he selected and entered the south-west quarter of section 22. Mr. Alspach is now living on this same tract of land, which by his industry has been converted into a beautiful and valuable farm. Mr. Alspach says he was married in March, 1835, built a cabin on his land, moved into it in May, without a door or window in place. A blanket served to close the door. This cabin stood in the woods, with wolves howling them to sleep at night. His nearest neighbor was Benj. O. Whitman, who lived one mile and a half distant. The first settlers in this part of the township, as Mr. Alspach remembers them, were the Woodruffs, Whitman, John Decker, Ebright, William Tanner and Jacob Powell previous to 1834, then came Jacob Zoll, Peter Oman, Moses Elsea, Henry Keel, John Powell, Daniel and Peter Fellers and J. Alspach. Mr. Alspach said that at one time he was at a log rolling or house raising every day for three weeks. All the township offices have been filled by Mr. Alspach, including Overseer of the Poor, and Fence Viewer, and yet he never became wealthy holding office. Mr. Alspach is and always has been an honest, upright man and good citizen. [HISTORY OF HANCOCK COUNTy, Ohio - Springfield, Ohio, D. B. Beardsley, 1881, pp 250-251]

NOTE that in the 1880 census, the last three children are all shown as being born in Indiana. The oldest of Indiana birth is John D., so that means ca 1872 they were in Indiana. However, child Luella May is even younger, and her baptism took place in Bloom township. Did she get baptised in Bloom township during a visit? Or is the place of birth in the 1880 census incorrect? The 1900 census also shows she was born in IN. Perhaps the parents took them to Fairfield county to be baptised in the parents former church?

LOCATION: 1958 - Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Hoover, daughter Sherry and son
Freddie, returned Sunday evening from a vacation trop to northern Michigan.
They reported good weather but fishing not so good. [Lancaster Eagle
Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, July 24, 1958]
LOCATION: 1959 - listed as a surviving daguther, Mrs. Ernestine Hoover, Lithopolis, in mother's Sept. 1959 obituary.
LOCATION: 1978 - listed as a surviving daughter and son-in-law, Ernestine (Teenie) and Woodrow Hoover of Lithopolis in father's Dec. 1978 obit.
When Ernestine (Teenie) Hoover first became the clerk for the Village of Lithopolis in 1950, things were very different from the way they are today. Frank J. Lausche was the governor of Ohio, and Gene Autrey and his horse, Champion, were starring in "Mule Train" at local moviehouses. At least 45 covered bridges were still in use in Fairfield County, and telephone numbers were only three or four digits long. Hoover has seen many changes in Lithopolis, too, but the biggest in nearly two generations came in last Wednesday's village council meeting, when council members bemoaned her retirement. The meeting was the last for Hoover, who is stepping down after 35 years and five months of service. That's a long time for someone who only expected the job to be a temporary assignement. "I took the job just to fill in, because the old clerk (Verna Long) had moved away," Hoover said. "I decided I wasn't just filling in anymore when I ran for re-election later that year. "I've never has any opposition in the elections," Hoover added. "I wished at different times I would have," she said, chuckling, "But I never did." Hoover, 68, was just the clerk when she started and the village also employed a treasurer to handle many of the financial duties. When they combined the jobs in 1952, Hoover became responsible for the village's four funds, a list that today has grown to 10. "Back when we had the general fund, the street, fire and cemetery fund," Hoover explained. "I sold cemetery lots, kept the books and did what little payroll we had. "The I turned whatever deficits were had over to (The) Wagnalls memorial, and they would take care of them," Hoover said. Although she is not a native of the village, Hoover said she has always considered Lithopolis to be her home town. Hoover was born ad raised near what is now Eastside Nursery and was graduated from Groveport High School. "But we came to Lithopolis every Saturday night," Hoover said. "It was our home town, and that was it. "If you hadn't seen the silent movies over at Wagnalls, you hadn't lived," Hoover added, noting Wagnalls was then contained in a single building. "Lithopolis was really a lively place then." "We even had an ice cream parlor right next to the grocery store." Money has always been a problem for the village, Hoover said, and she is usually the first one to hear about the finacial woes. "I was in the hospital a few years ago when somebody blew the door off the safe in the offices," Hoover said. "They (village officials) called me and asked if I knew who might have done it. "I couldn't get away from them even when I was sick," Hoover said, laughing. "The real funny thing was, the door on the safe was unlocked at the time." Hoover said a passage of a fire levy in the early 1950's helped the village's finances considerabley. "But, even then, if we had $200 in that account, that was a lot of money," Hoover added. Sometimes grieving relatives didn't have the $50 for a grave site, and Hoover said she didn't have the heart to tell them they couldn't have the plot. "I've spent many sleepless nights worrying about this town," she added. "I've laid awake at night wondering where we were going to get the money for the street lights." "But, we've never been without street lights since I've been here." In an ironic contrast, Hoover first served under the oldest mayor in Lithopolis history, Paul Kistler, Sr., who was in his late 70's when he won his second term as mayor in the early 1960's. Hoover's last of five mayors is the current one, Steve Goodyear, who was 19 when he was elected. "I started with the oldest and ended with the youngest," Hoover said. She said the village might not have grown much, but is had still changed a lot since she started her job in 1950."We had two funeral parlors, People's Store (it later burned), Whaley's Barber Shop and Kistler Brothers Hardware Store then," Hoover recalled. "we also had Metzger's TV, nerar the corner and there the craft shop stands today.
"Speedy Cramer owned a grocery store where the pizza place is now, we had the Law & Son dry goods store, and Rollie Kistler was the funeral director," Hoover said. The village handled its finances, Hoover remembered, through the Canal Winchester Bank, which she said later became the Central Trust, Co. "My husband and I set up the bookkeeping for the water department in 1958, and I was the first clerk and he was the superintendent," Hoover said. "That meant he read the meters and did the water billing." Hoover said she also learned, after some urgent calls in the middle of the night, how to run the "pump house" and the controls for the water system. "I've been a notary-not anymore, you get called out too late at night-I've sold auto, hunting and fishing licenses, and cemetery lots," Hoover said. For her many services, Hoover was paid the tidy sum of $65 per year. Council members got $10 a year in those days, she recalled, but they always gave the money back to the financially-troubled village. "One council member complained I always held on to one end of the check while he endorsed it," Hoover said, laughing. Hoover now makes $300 a year, but said the money is not the most important reward she gets for her service to the village. "I think I've taken pretty good care of the people in Lithopolis," Hoover said. But, as rewarding as her work has been, Hoover said she has no regrets in finally leaving the job behind her. "I feel like a racehorse that's run out of steam and is ready to be put out to pasture," Hoover sighed. "I've done a lot, and I think I deserve a rest." Hoover will be honored by village council in a tree-planting ceremony during the upcoming Memorial Day Celebration. "They (council members) have always been very good to me," Hoover said. "We've had our arguements, but we've always gotten along. "I think their planting a tree for me is one of the nicest things that's happened to me in 35 years.
14 MAY 1986; Times (Canal Winchester)
Note that the following article shows she was born in 1914.
A reception for friends and family members is scheduled for Sunday at The Wagnalls Memorial to honor Lithopolis resident Ernestine Hoover on her 80th birthday. Hoover is no stranger to anyone in Bloom Township. She was born in Bloom Township on September 14, 1914. She attended the first and second grade at the old Lithopolis School on South Street where the current Mason Lodge now sits. In the third grade, she moved to Groveport and graduated from Groveport High School in 1935 before going to business school in Columbus. Following Business school, she worked for the Ohio Department of Highways under Governor Davey. During her employment with the state, she met and married Woody Hoover who died four years ago. They have two children; Sherry Hoover Vercoe who resides in Columbus and Fred Hoover who resides in Hotchkiss, Colo. She has two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Hoover, whose friends call her "Tina" moved back to Lithopolis in 1951 to raise her family. After residing there for just a short time, she was elected as clerk of the village. Many memories followed her long career with the village. "I saw Bloom Canyon develop and many annexations during my reign," she stated. Bloom Canyon remains the largest housing subdivision in Lithopolis at this time. After water and sewer services were installed in the village, she for many years, collected the utility payments from local residents. She had no village office, but used her own residence on Columbus Street to receive payments. Collecting utility bills and serving as clerk were not the only functions Hoover performed. She was the notary, wrote burial permits, sold hunting and fishing licenses and auto license plates. And she owned a sporting goods store which was called "Ernie's Sporting Goods." She retired from the village after 35 1/2 years. "I started working in the village with the oldest mayor which was Paul Kistler and when I retired, I worked with the youngest mayor to serve in office, Steve Goodyear," she recalled. One of her fondest memories in village service was when she worked with former mayor Steve Goodyear in the 1980's when they worked to successfully get central sewage in the village. Governmental service in not Hoover's only claim to serving her community. She has been clerk of Bloom Presbyterian Church for 35 years, served as president of Greencastle Extension Club, is secretary of The Wagnalls Memorial Friends of the Library, Director of Publicity for Lithopolis Fine Arts Association, serves on the Ways and Means Committee of the Lithopolis Garden Club, telephone committe for the Literary Club, Moderator for the Women's Organization of the Bloom Presbyterian Church, is a server for the Tri-County Kiwanis Club, and is a poll-worker on Election Day. Most everyone knows Tina Hoover and the announcement that she is turning 80 comes as a surprise to people because of her youthful personality. Since her husband's passing, she travels all over the country. "I've enjoyed every place I've been to, but there isn't any place like where I live for good friends and family," she said.

DOBap: There are two children baptised on July 16, 1826, whose parents are
listed as Peter and Susanna Lang. One has no name listed, but his date of
birth is exactly that of George Long: 14 Aug 1819. The other is Lidia Lang,
born 11 Sep 1821. Sponsors for both were the parents. "Churchbooks of the
Lutheran and German Reformed Congregations of the Glick/Salem (Union)/Brick

NAME/DOB/DOD/POBurial/spouse: "Cemeteries of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH", Fairfield Co., Ohio, Chapter OGS, 1996, p 206. Page 376 shows info that was on the actual tombstone, which was Lydia Faler, wife of David, died June 12, 1863, aged 41y 4m 1d. Date of birth figured at age of death works out to be 11 Feb 1822. There is a Lydia Long who was baptized in Bloom township and who's birth was recorded as 11 Sep 1821. If the "4m" was misread and is actually "9m", the calculated date of birth would be Sept. 11, 1821. I believe that this Lydia Long is the one recorded as the daughter of Peter and Susannah and will merge the two Lydia Long's as one entry.
