"Mr. Dove's English ancestors emigrated to Virginia in the colonial period of our history. In Rockingham County of that state was born Henry Dove on February 7, 1765. He married Susannah Hoffman, who was born in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, June 26, 1777."
"The grandfather of Mr. Dove, Elijah Dove, was born in Fairfield County,
Ohio, July 27, 1811, where he spent most of his life and raised his family.
In later years he went to Illinois and spent the rest of his life in that
state. He died at Shelbyville, Illinois, in 1906. Elijah Dove had two
brothers, Ruben Dove, whose home was in Winchester, Ohio, and Jacob Dove of
Warsaw, Indiana. There were five sisters, namely: Laney Dove (Montgomery),
Peggy Dove (Orwic), Mary Dove (Hummel), Annie Dove (Benadnur), all of
Winchester, Ohio, and Elizabeth Dove (Kistler) of Warsaw, Indiana. The wife
of Elijah Dove, Anna Mary Small, was born in York, Pennsylvania, March 18,

Huguenots. Mrs. Anna Mary (Small) Dove had four brothers, Israel, John, Jacob
and Aaron, and four sisters, Lucy, Tarcy, Cordelia and Caroline, all of
Shelbyville, Illinois. Elijah and Anna Mary (Small) Dove had a large family
of thirteen children." A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans, written and
compiled by William E. Connelley, Secretary of the Kansas State Historical
Society, Topeka. Chicago: Lewis Publishing Company, copyright 1918; transcribed 1979.

"Mrs. Rogers' maternal grandfather, Henry Dove, was born in Virginia and died in Fairfield County, Ohio, aged nearly 100 years. He was blind and confined to his bed nine years previous to his death. Her grandfather Dove was twice married." [Kosciusko Co., Indiana Biographical and Historical Record, 1887, Lewis Publishing, Chicago, p 274.]

"Mr. [Samuel E.] Dove was born in Shelby County, Illinois, January 17, 1876. He is of Virginia colonial ancestry, his paternal ancestors having come out from England. His great-grandfather, Henry Dove, was born in Virginia and in pioneer times with his small stock of money and goods crossed the mountains and homesteaded at Carroll in Fairfield Co., Ohio. He died at Carroll in 1876. Elijah Dove, grandfather of the Hunley Banker [Samuel E. Dove] was born in Carroll, Ohio, in 1811 and spent all his life on the farm originally taken up and cleared by his father. Three years before his death he moved to Shelbyville, Illinois, and died there in 1896. His wife was Mary Small. She was born in Carroll, Ohio, and died there in 1876. W. L. Dove, father of Samuel E., was born in Ohio in 1843 and when a young man went to Shelby Co., Illinois. He married in that county and spent the rest of his life as a farmer. He died in 1886. Politically he was an independent and was a member of the United Brethren Church and one of the local preachers of that denomination. W. L. Dove married Eliza A. Warner who was born in Shelby Co., IL in 1853 and died there in 1886, the same year as her husband. Source Information: Ancestry.com. Montana History and Biography [database

"John Hummell... married Mary Dove, a daughter of Henry Dove, who came from Rockingham county, Virginia, in 1803, and entered land in Bloom township. The tract is still in possession of representatives of the name. He lived to the advanced age of 91 years, three months and eight days, passing away in 1856. Mrs. Dove's daughter was born in Bloom township and was one of seven children: Peggy, who became Mrs. Orwig; Ruben; Jacob; Sallie; Elizabeth, who became the wife of Solomon Kistler and died in Kosciusko county, Indiana; Elijah, who owned the old homestead, which for 99 years has been in the family and is now owned by his son, Edward, who lives in Kansas; Mary, now Mrs. Hummell; and Mrs. Laney Montgomery, of Fremont, Sandusky co., Ohio." "A Biographical Record of Fairfield and Perry Counties, Ohio, S. J. Clarke Pub., Co., 1902, p 142.

"Among the pioneers of Ohio who were active in its early development was the Dove family, of whom Henry Dove, the grandfather of our subject [Theodore] was the head. He was born in Rockingham Co., VA., Feb. 7, 1765, coming of one of the old Colonial families of that state, and there he grew to manhood and married, taking as his wife Mary Magdalina Altarfer, who was born in the Old Dominion, Jan. 1, 1775, the date of her birth. Grandfather Dove lived in his native State until 1804, and he then took his wife and the five children that had been born to them across the border into Ohio, making the journey over the mountains and through the intervening rough country with pack horses, and there founded a new home in the primeval forests of Fairfield County, of which he was one of the earliest settlers. He had previously visited that locality in search of a suitable location, journeying on horseback and carrying his silver for the purchase of land in his saddle bags. He invested in a tract of heavily wooded land in what is now Bloom township, paying therefor at the rate of $2.50 an acre. There was a log cabin on the land, in which the father of our subject was subsequently born. His father replaced it after a few years by a more substantial hewn log house, 20x30 feet in dimensions, which is still standing and is used as a dwelling. For many years there were no markets for produce nearer than Cincinnati, and consequently stock was very cheap, and horses, cattle and hogs were driven to Baltimore to be disposed of. The highest priced horses would bring but $40 at Fairfield, large hogs sold there for $1 and steers were sold from $6 to $8 each. The people raised their own food, varying the fare occasionally by a hauncy of venison or bear meat, or wild turkey, for all kinds of game then abounded. By years of faithful toil the grandfather cleared the farm, on which he passed his closing years serenly, dying at a good old age in 1856. His wife preceded him in death many years, dying in 1817. She was a notable housewife, was expert in spinning and weaving, and clad her children in garments of homespun. [Ancestry.com. [9257] Henry's partition records of 1885 mention his death, "Partition Record Abstracts, V2, 1851-1900 Fairfield County, Ohio", Fairfield County Chapter OGS, 1988, p 58.

DOB: Mentioned as dying at 100 years in the January 3, 1885 issue of the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette - obituary of Polly Duckwalt Kiger, wife, "Genealogical Abstracts from The Lancaster (Ohio) Gazette, V3, 1885-1890", Fairfield County Gen., Society, July 1998, p 1.

October 28, 1875 issue of the Lancaster Gazette mentions that Polly Kiger of Amanda Twp. is 103 years old, born in VA, and during the Revolution worked in a tailor shop where she mended a pair of suspenders for George Washington while he stood by and watched. Husband Henry is 108. They had 6 children, the oldest died at 81; remaining 5 still living, "Genealogical Abstracts from The Lancaster (Ohio) Gazette, V 2, 1874-1884, Fairfield County Gen., Society, March 1998, p 13.

DOD: Believe the death date is wrong in partition records (10 Mar 1870) as he's mentioned in 1875 newspaper as being 108.

Whoops... there appears to be two Henry KIGERs. In the 20 Mar 1879 issue there's mention of a Henry Kiger who died near Royalton at almost 100 years old. His widow survives; they had been married 78 years and were parents of 4 sons and 2 daughters -- one son deceased, "Genealogical Abstracts from The Lancaster (Ohio) Gazette, V 2, 1874-1884, Fairfield County Gen., Society, March 1998, p 40.

1860 - A LITTLE BOY SHOOTS HIS BROTHER. on Friday afternoon, while two little sons of Rev. J. S. Wise, Methodist minister at Lithopolis, about fifteen miles from Columbus, were at play together, the elder took a loaded shot gun which he pointed at his brother, making at the same time some playful demand with which the latter refused to comply. He thereupon, utterly unconscious that the gun was loaded, pulled the trigger. The charge took effect in the victim's head, blowing off the top of his skull and killing him instantly. [The Portsmouth Times, Portsmouth, Ohio, March 3, 1860]

2nd article - same newspaper and date:

1860 - Shocking Casualty. A Boy Eleven Years Old Shoots His Brother's Head Off. It is seldom that we are called upon to chronicle a more lamentable or heart-rending affair than the following: Saturday afternoon, two sons of Re.v J. S. Weize, at Lithopolis, Fairfield County, were playing in a room of their father's house, when one of them, eleven years old, took up a gun which was standing in the corner and playfully remarked to his brother, six years old, that he would shoot him, and leveling the gun, fired away, blowing the whole half of the little fellow's head off, killing him instantly. The older brother did not dream of there being a load in the gun, only raising and leveling it in sport; but it was heavily charged with shot, and the aim was too true. Mr. Weize was in Columbus at the time of the accidental fratracide, but a messenger was sent for him and met him at Shadeville, returning home, when the awful news was imparted. Mrs. Weize was nealry frantic with her great grief, and the surviving brother will not be consoled. The gun was kept loaded to shoot pigeons, as they flew over the village in large numbers, and either the fact should known to the boys, or the gun put out of their reach. -- O.S. Journal. "Israel Shuman Weisz... born Nov. 27, 1821; d. Jan. 15, 1893; m. Jan. 4, 1843 Elizabeth Sell Foltz (b April 12, 1821; d June 26, 1869). He m. second June 7, 1870, Emma Louisa Troxell (b July 4, 1835; d March 8, 1896). He was one of the oldest active ministers of the Reformed church. He was a man of more than ordinary ability, and possessed a very large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was born in Lancaster, Ohio. His father, Rev. George Weisz, was the pastor in charge for forty years of the Lancaster and Lithopolis churches in Fairfield Co., Ohio. Here Israel received his early educational training; and at Mercersburg, PA., he completed his preparation for the gospel ministry. He frequently recounted pleasant college day experiences when associated in student life with Revs. Moses Kieffer, D. D., George W. Welker, D. D., and Aaron Warner, D. D. In 1843 he entered the ministry as pastor of the Clearspring, Maryland, charge, and remained their three years, teaching a select school in connection with his ministerial charge. In 1847, Dr. Weisz accepted a call to Newville, PA., '47 and '49. Thence he returned to his native place in Ohio, where for ten years he served the field once occupied by his honored father for so long a period.

"Coming back to Pennsylvania in 1859, he labored in the Nittany Valley charge for two years. In 1861 the Reverend removed to Mifflinburg, Union county, where he worked until the close of the War. In Nov. 1865, he located in Williamsport, PA., and in '68 he entered the Mount Bethel charge, Northampton Co., PA., where in the following year he drank the bitter cup of affliction in the bereavement of his precious helpmeet who had shared the burdens and trials of his ministry for over 50 years. One year later he wedded Emma Louisa Troxel, of Stonechurch, Northampton county." He had 12 ch by first wife and 2 by second.
