"Conrad Crumley, son of Christian and Salome Crumley, was born in Penn Township, Northampton County, PA., on the 24th of Jan., 1802; his parents were Lutherans and the infant Conrad was baptized and brought up in that faith. In the year 1803 Christian Crumley with his family, left PA to seek a new home in Ohio. They made a temporary stop in Lancaster and during that time one of his children died. He purchased a section of woodland in Bloom township, built a cabin and moved his family to the new home, about one mile west of Rock Mill. Here young Conrad remained until he became a man. He assisted his father in clearing up his farm, and tasted the joys and endured the privations of pioneeer life. When 18 years of age he was confirmed a member of the Lutheran Church, and to the end of his life was a faithful member and a consistent Christan. His membership at this time was at the Glick Church, Rev. M. J. Steck, pastor.
"On two occasions Christian Crumley loaded flat boats at Gallipolis for New Orleans. Conrad drove the team that carried, or drew, the produce to load these boats. He made nine trips in one winter, through an almost unbroken forest to Gallipolis, a distance of one hundred miles. February 23, 1824, Conrad Crumley was married to Miss Mary M. Feller. He then settled upon a quarter section of land donated by his father, entirely in the woods. He lived in a rude cabin and devoted his energies to clearing up his farm, where his son Daniel now resides, in Hocking township.
"Here he lived a quiet, peaceful life for forty-one years, and reared a large family of children, eleven in number. Two of his sons were in the Union army. After the war two of them, George and Daniel, were in Columbus and took passage on the same coach with Colonel McVeigh an family. The coach was upset and McVeigh and his son were killed. The Crumley boys remained with the family and brought the dead to Lancaster. When a friend spoke to the old man and praised his boys for their good conduct, tears came to his eyes and he replied: 'I am proud of my boys'.
"Conrad Crumley was one of the grand old men of the past, one whose example for good was felt in a very large circle of acquaintances. He was for a number of years a trustee of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Lancaster, and later of Trinity, near his home. He died March 8, 1879, aged 77 years. He had been married 55 years. His son David, married Sarah, a daughter of the late Daniel Ward." "Pioneer Period and Pioneer People of Fairfield County, Ohio", C. M. L. Wiseman, F. J. "Across the street from the Elkhorn, however, stands a house whose occupants are well remembered since they were very active in the Village life. When I first remember it, it was the residence of Jacob Lehman. He was a shoemaker, who came to the Village from Middletown, or Oregon, when the hope of that site growing was given up. He was a public spirited man, as were his boys. Can I recall all their names? There were Andrew, George W., Elisha, Perry and Solomon. There were three daughters. These men were so active in the affairs of the Village that they deserve a chapter for themselves. But we must be content with brief sketches. Andrew was a farmer, and did not live in the Village at any time. George W., of course named in honor of the father of our country, was a blacksmith, and intensely interested in political affairs. About his forge gathered many of those likewise interested.... Perry Lehman was the hardware merchant for his lifetime. He was first a partner of Reuben Blackwood, and then of George Wiser. This firm was as widely known as the Village itself. Elisha and Solomon did not spend all their years in the home village, but were there so frequently as to be considered a part.", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 28.
"Wash, as he was familiarly called, married a widow Smith, from the near village of Royalton, who brought several children by her previous marriage to grace his home. These all grew to manhood and womanhood, and won for themselves honorable places in the world.... Later in life, Wash built himself a commodious house on the site of the prior Seltzer blacksmith shop.", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 29a.

Taylor, William Alexander. History of Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio, Vol. 1, Chicago: S.J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1909. "In the year 1799 his [Ervin Moore] father, Levi Moore, made his way from Allegany county, Maryland, to Ohio and settled near the present site of Lancaster. He made the trip in company with Abraham and Major Bright and married a sister of the former. A part of the company traveled westward by boat and others made the journey with horses. Those who traveled by the water route descended the Ohio river to the mouth of the Hockhocking and thence made their way up the latter in canoes to the mouth of Rush creek. As the country between Wheeling and Hockhocking at that time was a wilderness, they were obliged to continue their journey by means of the streams as best they could. Levi Moore settled three miles below Lancaster, becoming one of the pioneers of the country. In 1811 he took up the homestead which is still in possession of his son, Ervin Moore, his deed to the property being signed by James Madison as president of the United States and James Monroe as secretary of state. Thus for almost a century the Moore family has figured as prominent factors in the devlopment and progress of this section of Ohio."
