between the 1880 and 1900 census and is shown as being born in Feb 1874 and
only 26 years old. Son Thurman is shown as being now older than son Charles
-- Thurman being born June 1875 and Charles in Mar 1877 -- yet their draft
registration cards shown the exact opposite... Charles in June 1875 and
Thurman in March 1877.

WILLIAM MUSSELMAN -- Among the prominent farmers of Miami county, we find
none more worthy of representation in a work of this character than the
subject of this sketch.
Mr. Musselman is a native of the Keystone state, born in Lancaster county
on the 22nd of May, 1844. He became a "Hoosier" by adoption when a lad of ten years, and his life thus far has been identified with the interests of Miami
county. The old parental home was located in Richland township, where his
boyhood and youth were spent on his father's farm.
At the age of eighteen years he entered the army as a member of Company
I, 99th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, enlisting in August, 1862, and from that
date until the final muster-out of the victorious armies he remained at the
front. Few of the remnant of that grand old army have a more brilliant
military career than Mr. Musselman. He entered the service after the
desultory work of organization was practically completed, the troops drilled
and equipped and the questions of jealousy and bickerings among would-be
leaders settled.
In the seige of Atlanta was his first active service, aside from the
skirmishing and manuevering that led up to that brilliant achivement. He
also participated in many of the hard-fought battles of the western army,
among which may be mentioned those involved in the siege of Jackson, the
relief of Rosecrans at Chattanooga, Vicksburg, Sherman's march to the sea,
lookout mountain, Missionary Ridge "above the clouds," Perryville, Buzzards'
Roose, Peach Tree creek and others of less importance but equal danger on the Atlantic coast.
Then came the march through the Carolinas and "on to Richmond" and to
Washington, and participation in the grand review of the victorious armies at the nation's capital. This was an experience for which some of the "loyal
stay-at-homes" would gladly exchange their hoarded treasures were it
possible. Bur fortunately the sacred old GAR button is jealously guarded by
the records of the nation; and no traitor or convicted coward can pass the
portals of the order. The sons of veterans of blue and gray are encamped
upon the sacred field of Chickamauga, where doubtless some of their fathers
fell. It is a better lesson in patriotism and object-teaching than
generations of theories and explanations. It shows the results achieved by
the sufferings of their ancestors, and that today we are "as one man united
against a foreign enemy."
At the close of the war Mr. Musselman returned to the parental home in
Richland township where he engaged in farming upon the old home place until
1872. when he located where he now resides, in Allen township. It is said
that he is one of the model farmers of the country, and this view is fully
justified by an exmination of the place. An elegant country mansion adorns
an elevated plat of ground, apparently designed by nature for a building
spot. Beautiful native and exotic ornamental trees and shrubs intermingled
with showy flowers adorn this ideal home site. Commodious barns and other
necessary farm buildings occupy their proper places in the background.
Everywhere there is an air of thrift and prosperity, reflecting credit upon
the careful and frugal owner. This farm embraces four hundred and fifty acres of highly improved and fertile land. it is stocked with the various kinds of
domestic animals, and is managed for both grain-raising and stock-raising.
The properietor is making a specialty of breeding thoroughbred Red-Polled
cattle, for which he has a good demand, at the present time having forty head of thoroughbreds.
Mr. Musselman has been twice maried, his first marriage being solemnized
on the 18th of March, 1869, when he wedded Miss Susan E. Kiem, a daughter of
Samuel and Mary (Derk) Keim, natives of Pennsylvania; and less than thee
years after their marriage he was compelled to mourn by following her to the grave, namely, in March, 1872; and on the 5th of December, 1873, he was
united in marriage with Miss Priscilla C. Foor, a native of Miami county,
Indiana, born July 7, 1855, a daughter of Stephen and Hannah (Runkle) Foor,
formerly residents of Allen township, where the father died. Two children
were born to bless the first union, and also two to the second; these are
Samuel H. and Mary E., and Franklin D. and William Harvy. The fourth child
is twenty-one years younger than his brother Franklin.
Mr. Musselman is one of the prominent and influential Republicans of Allen township, wielding in a quiet way a potent influence in local politics, and
no reasonable sacrifice is too great for him to make if the party is to be
benefited thereby. At the present time he is filling the place of township
trustee of Allen township, a position of great importance and responsibility.
By virtue of this office he has absolute control of the public affairs of the township, including its schools, the hiring of teacher, the making and
repariing of roads, the care of the poor, the conduct of elections, etc. He
is a public-spirited, enterprising citizen, possessing the unbounded
confidence of all who know him. His success in life is not the result of
self-denial but rather the outgrowth of intelligent financiering, joined with industry and good judgment. He is liberal toward public enterprises, generous to the poor and afflicted -- in short, a gentleman whom every community
delights to honor. He is liberal also in his religious feelings, never having connected himself with any church organization. Mrs. Musselman is a member
of the "Church of God," and he is a member of the Odd Fellows order.
The Musselman family is of German origin, the first representatives in
America coming to this country several generations ago. Our subject has but
one brother living, John by name, who is a farmer in Richland township, Miami county. These are the only survivors of eight children.

WILLIAM MUSSELMAN, one of the prominent farmers and stock-raisers of Miami
County, and one of the industrious and influential citizens of Allen
Township, was born in Lancaster Pennsylvania May 22,1844. He was the second
son born to Joseph and Mary (Krider) Musselman, both natives of
Pennsylvania, of German descent. When William was ten years old his parents
came to this county and located in Richland Township, where he spent his
youth working upon his father's farm. At eighteen years of age he entered
the Union army, enlisting in Company I, 99th Indiana Volunteer Infantry,
with which he did faithful service for his country from August, 1862, until
the close of the war. He participated in the siege of Atlanta, the March to
the Sea, the siege of Vicksburg, the battles of Jackson, Miss., Lookout
Mountain, Missionary Ridge and some others on the Atlantic Coast. At the
close of the war he returned to the home of his father in Richland Township.
There he farmed upon the old home place until 1872, when he located where he
now resides in Allen Township. March 18, 1869, he was married to Susan E.
Kiem, a daughter of Samuel and Mary (Derk) Kiem, both natives of
Pennsylvania. Mr. Musselman lost his first wife in March, 1872, and on 5th
day of December, 1873, he was married to Priscilla C. Foor, a native of this
county, born July 7, 1855. She is the daughter of Stephen and Hannah
(Runkle) Foor, who now reside in Allen Township. By his first wife Mr.
Musselman had two children, Samuel H. and Mary E. He and his present wife
have had but one child, Franklin D. Mrs. Musselman is a member of the Church
of God. In politics, Mr. Musselman is a Republican. He has a beautiful home
and a handsome farm of 256 acres of good land, about 200 of which is in a
high state of cultivation. His farm is fitted up with good fences and
splendid buildings, and is one of the most desirable locations in Miami
County. He is an industrious and successful farmer and an honored citizen.

Auggie loved Bedford County and hanging out at Tony's Bar in Riddlesburg. DOB/DOD/POBurial: "Cemeteries of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH", Fairfield Co., Ohio, Chapter OGS, 1996, p 280, 387. Years only: 1820-1893

DOD/POD: From probate records; scanned copy sent to me by a person who wishes to remain anonymous, April 2006. It shows she died October 16, 1893 at 73y 1m 9d. and was born and died in Bloom Twp., and was a widow. The record is listed under Greencastle precint of Bloom Twp. She resided in Greencastle and died of dropsy. The sender of this info figured her birth out to be "most likely September 30, 1820". When I use two different programs to figure the date, it comes to Sept. 7, 1820.

OBIT: On the 11th inst at her home near Greencastle, Mrs. Mary Morehart, aged 83 years and 16 days. The deceased leaves a large family to mourn her departure. She was an exemplary member of the Reformed church and was loved and respected by all who knew her. The funeral took place on Sunday forenoon from the Zion's Reformed church, the services being conducted by Rev. J. Heffley. [image of obit emailed to me by anonymous; original source The Winchester Times, Canal Winchester, October 18, 1893]

NOTE: There are discrepancies in her death date. The probate records show she died at 73y 1m 9d on October 16th, 1893, and the obit says the 11th at 83y 16d. The '83' definitely appears to be an error since census records back up the more likely age of 73 at death. The obit states she was buried on a Sunday. Looking at an 1893 calendar, the 11th is a Wednesday, making the Sunday as a day of burial as the 15th. Usually, especially back then, a person was buried within 2 or 3 days. If she did indeed die on the 11th, it would've been more likely she'd have been buried on the 13th or 14th. If she died on the 16th as the probate records show, the 16th is a MONDAY. I sincerely doubt they waited 7 days to bury her on the following Sunday which was the 22nd. Since there is a known error in the obituary... stating she was 83y old, perhaps the mention of being buried on a Sunday is also an error.
