NOTE: Dorothy shows up in 1920 as the child of Jacob and Carrie FOOR, and in the 1930 census as Dorothy DALTON, child of Thomas DALTON and Lottie FOOR. Lottie is Dorothy's older sister. Parentage unknown. It seems unlikely that Jacob and Carrie would name two children Dorothy, and there's already a Dorothy Foor by this couple. Could Bruce and Dorothy, ages 6 and 4 in 1920, be children of Lottie born "out of wedlock"?

POB/DOD/POD: David Stoner, 13673 Ridgeland Drive, Seminole, FL 33776.
"At age 38, Peter Foor, a Bedford County farmer, enlisted in
Company K of the 208th PA Vol. Inf. on August 18, 1864 in Bloody
Run, PA. Due to exposure to bad weather without a tent to sleep
in, he developed a lung problem near Petersburg, VA and was sent
to various hospitals from December 14, 1864 - March 1865. He
returned to duty on March 18, 1865, just in time for the action at
Fort Stedman. He was at the fall of Petersburg, VA, on April 2,
1865, where he lost his brother, Simon Peter Foor, Jr., also in
Co. K (ironically one week before the war ended). He was
discharged when his company mustered out on June 1, 1865. Because
of his lung ailment (and resulting heart problem), he was unable
to work more than half a day in a 24 hour period, for which he
received a disability pension for 21 years. He died on March 2,
1900, in Cypher, PA, and was buried with his relatives in the Rays
Cove Christian Church cemetery near Everett, Bedford County, PA.
His stone and GAR marker are intact." (David Stoner).

[22611] "Accident Proves Fatal to Earlston Youth. The death of Vaughn O. Hamm, well known young man of Earlston, PA., was the result of an accident, which occurred on the Bedford-Cumberland road, now under construction on Wednesday morning, October 7, between 9 and 9:30 o'clock. The youth was seventeen years, 11 months and 11 days of age, having been born October 26, 1907, a son of Howard, deceased, and Victoria Foor Hamm residing at Earlston. The young man had been working on the road under construction and the accident occurred when he alighted from a large truck, his foot having caught and thrown him. He suffered a fractore of the skull. Death was instantaneous." [Bedford Gazette, Bedford, PA, October 9, 1925].

1910 - There's a death listed for Mahlon King, July 7, 1910, Benton Twp., age 64. This would certainly appear to be the correct Mahlon, except he's listed as a surviving brother in sister Florence's 1926 obit. Ancestry.com. Indiana Deaths, 1882-1920 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2004. The source of this record is the book H-17 on page 18 within the series produced by the Indiana Works Progress Administration.

1926 - listed as a surviving brother, Mahlon, in sister Florence's obituary.

NOTE: I think that Florence's obituary was not correct. I think Mahlon died in 1910, especially since in 1920 his wife, Clemmie, is listed as widowed.

[28313] "Peter Powell - Was married to Mary Alspaugh, daughter of Henry Alspaugh.
After his marriage he rented a farm in Mifflin County, PA., where he remained
until 1814, when he, with his family, moved to Bloom Twp., Fairfield County,
Ohio, where he bought 320 acres of land. His children were as follows:
Samuel, Catherine, Henry, Elizabeth, John, Jacob, Philip, Daniel, Polly,
Rebecca, Peter and George." Powell, John,. Authentic genealogical memorial
history of Philip Powell of Mifflin Co., Pa.. : and his descendants and
others, with miscellaneous items and incidents of interest. Dayton, Ohio:
Published for the author, 1880, p 43

"Philip Powell came to Hancock County, Ohio, in 1834. He married Elizabeth Fellers, a cousin to John and Henry Powell's wives. He was the father of four children, one of whom is dead. he died in 1866. His grandchildren number thirteen living and three dead." Powell, John,. Authentic genealogical memorial history of Philip Powell of Mifflin Co., Pa.. : and his descendants and others, with miscellaneous items and incidents of interest. Dayton, Ohio: Published for the author, 1880, p 73.

"Philip Powell, son of Peter Powell, was born in Mifflin County, PA., July 1st, 1809. He came to Fairfield County, Ohio, in 1814 and went to Hancock County, Ohio, in 1834. He was married Feb. 22d, 1836, to Elizabeth Fetters, daughter of Peter Fetters. She was born Dec. 25, 1815. They had three children; namely Joshua, born Oct. 27, 1836; Peter H., born July 17, 1838; Simon, born July 21st, 1840. The latter now lives in Nevada.

"Elizabeth Powell died March 6, 1841; and April 15, 1842, Philip Powell was married to Susannah Tussing, daughter of Christopher Tussing. She was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, April 20, 1818, and came to Hancock County, Ohio, where she was married. She had one child, Moses Powell, who was born February 19th, 1854, and died March March, 1854. Susannah Powell died September 25, 1857, after a lingering illness. In 1861 Mr. Powell was married to his third wife, Magdalene Feasle; and on August 29th, 1866, he died, aged 57 years, 1 month and 28 days. He and his wife were faithful members of the Evangelical Association. He now lies beside his two sainted wives in the Powell Cemetery, Eagle Twp., Hancock County, Ohio.

"It may be interesting to state how Philip became a shoe-maker. He had an impediment in his speech from childhood, which made it difficult for him to talk, being naturally timid. Although a sensible young man, he had but little to say in strange company, and especially to the fairer sex. The youn men in his day, when they turned their attention to the young ladies, wanted fine boots to wear; so when Peter Powell's boys began to keep comany with the 'lovely ones', their father bought boots for all but Philip, thinking that as he was so shy of company he did not need any. But Philip did not like that idea. He thought he had as good a right to wear fine boots as the rest of the boys, even if he did not 'run after the girls'. Seeing that his father would not buy him any, and having no money with which to buy them, he made up his mind that there was more than one way of getting a pair; so one day he asked his father for the leather to make a pair of boots. His father, having no thought of his son undertaking such a job, told him that if would make them himself he might have the leather which he had on hand. Philip said no more but started off. He went to a shoe-shop and watched a man making a pair of fine boots. Then he asked the man if he would be kind enough to lend him his tools a few days, as he wanted to make himself a pair of fine boots. The shoe-maker, thinking he would see some fun, told Philip he might have all he wanted. So he took the tools and started home; and before his father was aware of it, Philip had his boots cut out, and was busy at work. In due time he had them done, and had the 'good luck' of making a nice fit, which made him feel real proud. He was always ready to exhibit them, as they were really better than those the other boys had.Source: Original data: Powell, John,.
