Believe John D. was married to a Harriet KERNs. Several people were baptised on one day at St. John's, and in order they included John D., then a "Harry KERNS", then three of his children. I believe the "Harry Kerns" is probably his wife, Harriet -- although the birth year doesn't match for Harriet, neither does John D.'s when comparing the church records to the tombstone record.

Both John D. and Harriet E. BISHOP were confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Church by Rev. O. S. Oglesby on October 7, 1888, "St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lithopolis, Bloom Township, Fairfield Co., OH, 1853-1920", Fairfield Co. Chapter OGS, 1994, p 44.

CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF COLUMBUS AND FRANKLIN COUNTY, OHIO - William Alexander Taylor, S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1909, p 192-195.

JOHN D. BISHOP.
John D. Bishop, a well known and progressive agriculturist of Madison township, is a native son of this county, having been born on the farm where he still resides. In 1807 John Bishop, an uncle of Jacob Bishop, the father of our subject, located on the farm which was the birthplace of Jacob Bishop and also of John D. Bishop and which is now owned and occupied by the latter. The property comprises one hundred and eighty-seven and a half acres and the deed thereto was signed by Andrew Jackson. Jacob Bishop, whose birth occurred in 1812, passed away in 1883, in the faith of the Baptist church. In politics he was a Jacksonian democrat and took an active interest in public affairs, serving as assessor for several years and also as land appraiser for some time. He was recognized throughout the community as a man of sound judgment and keen discrimination and his advice was as freely given as it was sought. His wife, whose natal year was 1822, bore the maiden name of Catharine Ordell. Unto this worthy couple were born the following children: Mary, Henry, John D., Edson, Catharine, Sydney, Irene and Minnie, now living; and George and Louisa, who have passed away.

Throughout his business career John D. Bishop has been successfully engaged in agricultural pursuits, cultivating and improving the old home farm which has now been in possession of the family for more than a hundred years. He follows progressive and modern methods in the conduct of his farming interests, the fields yielding golden harvests annually as a reward for the care and labor he bestows upon them.

In 1878 Mr. Bishop was united in marriage to Miss Harriet Emma Treese, by whom he has the following children : Maud M.; Catharine E.; Octavia; and Jacob Edson, who is a student in the Ohio State University.

Politically Mr. Bishop is a stalwart democrat and has acted in the position of assessor for fifteen years, his service during ten years of that time being continuous. His religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Lutheran church and he is well known and highly esteemed throughout the county in which he has spent his entire life.

"Harry Finney, 24, of Lithopolis, is under arrest at Columbus and according to officers there has confessed to the robbery, Wednesday night June 15th of William Conaway's home near Lithopolis and forging of Conaways name to checks which he is alleged to have stolen from the house. Besides checks, checkbook and account books, Finney is said to have stolen Conaway's revolver and this led to his downfall when he attempted to pawn it in a Columbus shop Friday morning. When arrested he gave the name of Conaway and it was by an amusing coincidence that his real identity was discovered. Deputy Sheriff Behrens of Fairfield county, another Lithopolis man, was in Columbus on another case when the police captain told him that William Conaway, a man from the deputy's home town was in jail. Behrens, mystified, asked, asked to see him and recognized Finney who, seeing his identity was disclosed is said to have confessed. [Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster, Ohio, Jun 22, 1927]

Alex Chesser, alias Silas Stuart, aged 20, has been brought to the Fairfield county jail following his arrest in Columbus and will be tried here for the burglarizaing of William Conaway's home near Lithopolis. Shesser [sic] is said to have aided Harry Finney, 24, Conaway's nephew, to rob the house. Finney is held at Columbus and according to police there confessed the robberty and also the forgery of his uncle's name. [Lancaster Daily, Eagle, June 25, 1927]

Harry Finney, a former Lithopolis man, was sentenced to a year in Mansfield Reformatory when he pleaded guilty to forgery yesterday in Columbus court. Fairfield Co. officials still hold a warrant for Finney's arrest, charging him with breaking into his uncle's house at Lithopolis last June. On this occasion he was accompanied by Algie Chesser, it is said, and the latter is now serving 1-7 years in the reformatory for that offense, he being captured and sentenced here. The Columbus police, however, got Finney before the local officers found him and he went 'over the road' on their charge. [Lancaster Daily Gazette, Oct. 27, 1927]

"Youth Who Robbed Lithopolis House Runs Away From Prison Honor Farm" - Three
prisoners walked away from the honor farm at the Mansfield Reformatory
yesterday afternoon according to a report made to the state penitentiary
today. They were... Algie Chesser, 21, [of] Fairfield county, serving 1-7
years for burglary and larceny... Chesser, who originally came from Conyers,
GA, was 'sent up' Oct. 11th last year after he had been convicted of robbing
William Conaway's residence at Lithopolis. He was said to have abetted
Conaway's nephew in the deed." [Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster, Ohio, July

NOTE: SPOUSE IS UNCONFIRMED! This theory initially started out with finding death info for a Robin Sibbit Morrow b 10 Jun 1961 in Warren, Trumbull Co., Ohio. She died there 19 Nov 1988, Cert. 092832, her parents last names listed as HODGKISS and FOOR. There was no Hodgkiss in my database at the time so I tried to search for a Hodgkiss in Warren. A Robin Hodgkiss is somehow connected to Donald G. and Shirley M. Hodgkiss as I found two documents indexed with all three names listed at the Trumbull Co., Ohio Recorder's website. I then tried to find something on Shirley Hodgkiss to see if her maiden name was Foor. I found her in the SSDI as being born 08 Jul 1929, and died 24 Jul 2006 with the last known residence of Warren, Trumbull Co., Ohio. No obit could be found online but it's now 3 months after her death. The only Shirley Foor I thought it could possibly be was this Shirley born about 1929, so the date of birth fits.

According to an email from the Local History and Genealogy staff at the Warren-Trumbull County Library in Warren, Ohio, "We have located an obituary for Shirley Hodgkiss who died 24 July 2006. Her obituary states that she was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin, whose last name was not given. We searched, but we did not locate any obituary for Robin Sibbit Morrow who died November 1988." Because of the mention of Robin, the info found for Shirley Hodgkiss mentioned above must be for Shirley (FOOR) b abt 1929.

[7771] NAME/DOB: From 1850 census.

"William Homrighaus, ... first came to Lithopolis from Royalton, not many years before the Civil War. He was very prominent in village affairs. He was elected Justice of the Peace and the title 'squire' always preceded his name." "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 25.

"Sunday night at Lithopolis an attempt was made by human ghouls to enter the mortuary in Sand Hill cemetery, evidently for the purpose of obtaining the body of William Homrighouse, interred the same day. They succeeded in forcing the outer door, which is built of two thicknesses of stout plank, lined with galvanized iron, but failed to produce any impression on the inner one, constructed of case-hardened iron. There were four more bodies in the vault at the time, but it is supposed the ghouls wished the body spoken of, as his disease was one that local physicians could give no satisfactory diagnosis of." Savilla E. Fellers, age 27/30, single, b OH, parents b OH, born in Sept.,
died of unknown, resided in county for 27/30. It is not known what the 27/30
means... in prior entries, if a person was one month of age, it is listed as
1/12, and if a person's age is unknown or not certain, it appears he put
parenthesis around it such as (18). Perhaps it indicates "about 27-30 years
old". Family 78 in the census is that of Elmira's divorced mother, Lizzie M. Knepper and her divorced sister, Manerva.

Thomas Swope, grandfather of S. B. Swope, was born in Huntingdon County, PA., Feb. 19, 1800, and was the youngest son of David and Mary (Cole) Swope. David Swope was born March 4, 1771 and was the owner of a farm in Huntingdon County, PA., three and one-half miles distant from that of his wife's father, Thomas Cole, the mountain lying between them. The records of Huntingdon County show the sale of the Cole farm on May 12, 1801, and that of David Swope on May 16, 1801. After disposing of their farms, they, with their respective families, moved, in May or June of that year, to Fairfield County, O. There, in the dense forest, they cleared land and built cabins, and, with their neighbors endured the privations and hardships of pioneer life. A convenient cabin was built by David Swope, with one window, a door hung on wooden hinges fastened with wooden latch on the inside and opened on the outside by means of a string that was tied to the latch and put through a gimlet hole in the door. The Indianas regarded those who left the latchstring of their cabin doors outside as friendly, but those who too in the string were objects of suspicion. David Swope set out an apple orchard and other furuits and early built a two-story, hewed log house, which contained two rooms below and two above. Two porches graced the building, one on the south and one on the north side. He also built a hewed long house with a threshing-floor between two commodious mows, wheat in those days being threshed by the trampling of horses upon it.

David Swope, by thrift and industry, accumulated sufficient to give each of his children a property. The home farm at his death, August 9, 1826, went to his youngest son, David Swope, who, not inclining to farm life sold it later to his brother, Thomas Swope. The wife of David Swope Sr., was born June 3, 1779, and survived her husband many years, dying February 20, 1857. Thomas Swope walled in a lot on the home place where his father, a brother and sister, a niece and the oldest and the youngest of his own children were buried. In 1909 the last two named were removed to the family burying ground in Amanda Township Cemetery.

Soon after his marriage, Thomas Swope took possession of his farm which he cleared and on which he built a two-story, brick house, a large frame barn and other buildings needed in successful operation of his farm. In the early days he carred on the business of freighting by means of a four or six-horse team and wagon, and hauled produce from the surrounding country to Baltimore, MD., and would there load far the return trip with supplied for the merchants of the towns near home. These trips were often attended with great difficulties and dangers, and sometimes were without financial rewards. Upon one occasion, having slaughtered some seventy-five hogs and cured the meat, he conveyed it to Baltimore, where is was disposed of to merchants, who failed before paying him. In 1819, with a man named Hooker, he built a raft and loaded it with produce for New Orleans. The trip down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers was easy, but the return was most difficult, and many miles of it were walked along the river banks. He died August 13, 1884.

Thomas Swope was married to Rebecca Le Fever, who was born October 10, 1805, and died August 15, 1887. She was a daughter of Jacob and Rebecca (Bechtel) Le Fever. Her father was born March 1766, and died November 18, 1844, and her mother was born December 4, 1770, and died February 3, 1829. Thomas and Rebecca Swope were parents of the following children, of whom the oldest and youngest died during the lives of the parents. David, the eldest, in 1837, fell from a loaded wagon and was crushed beneath the wheels. Jacob died at Wellsville, MO., in 1906. Margaret A. died in April 1911, on the home farm. Mary E. is the wife of Robert Sturgeon and lives in Kansas. Rebecca died in 1906. Thomas J. lives at Reynoldsburg, O. Tilitha Jane, now deceased, was the wife of James Ingman and lives at Barnes, KS. Abner R. lives at Bloomingburn, Fayette County, O. Louisa is the wife a B. F. Ashbrook and lives at Milo, O. Samuel lives at Toledo, O. Felix is a resident of Lancaster, O. Emma J. was the wife of Robert Peters and died in 1872.
