OBIT: George Lamb is Killed at Hooker - Meets Death in His Own Grain Elevator. Prominent Grain Dealer and Former Representative to State Legislature is Struck When Fly Wheel Comes Off Engine and Death Results an Hour Later. When the fly-wheel came off the engine in his grain elevator at Hooker station about 9:30 o'clock this morning, George W. Lamb, aged 73, prominent grain dealer and former representative to the State Legislature from Fairfield County received injuries from which he died about an hour later. Melancthon Beck the local stock dealer of 501 North Columbus stree had been talking to Mr. Lamb only a few moments before and was present at the elevator when the accident occurred. Mr. Lamb had walked down to the end of the building in which the engine is located and when Mr. Beck's attention was attracted by the sound of a commotion he discovered the owner of the place stretched out at full length with the big fly wheel lying nearby. Mr. Lamb quickly regained consciousness but it was apparent that he ahd been badly injured internally. He complained of sever pains in his reight side where the wheel had struck him. Mr. Beck aided in carrying the injured man to the Lamb home a short distance away. Dr. J. J. [S?]ilbaugh was hastily summoned but within an hour after the accident occurred Mr. Lamb had breathed his last.
The deceased received his education at the Fairfield-Union Academy of Pleasantville and taught school for a number of years. He operated the grain elevator at Hooker for about forty years, and from 1896 to 1900 he served as representative from this county in the Ohio General Assembly.
At the time of his death Mr. Lamb had in his grain elevator 12,000 bushels of wheat that he had purchased for less than one dollar per bushel. He was preparing to sell the grain for something like $1.75 per bushel. He was twice married and he is survived by his second wife besides the following five children: E. W. Lamb of Hooker, Mrs. J. M. Brandt of Gilman, Montana, Mrs. R. M. Shaver of Cleveland and Misses Catherine an Alberta Lamb of the home. The two younger daughters who have been visiting in New York City are now on their way home having received word regarding their father's death. [Lancaster Daily Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, Nov. 22, 1916]

Bowers of this city assisted by Rev. Ricketts of Carroll will officiate at the services and private burial will take place in the Cemetery at Hooker. [Lancaster Daily Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, Nov. 24, 1916]

Surrounded with beautiful flowers, the tribute of many frieds the remains were lad to rest in the cemetery at Hooker. [Lancaster Daily Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, Nov. 25, 1916]
Info from Judith Flinn via March 2002 email: From a letter addressed to Charles Goslin from Philip R. Lamb, dated 8 Aug 1978, which can be found in the Vertical File, Surname File Drawer in the Genealogy Section, Fairfield County District Library: " State Senator Geo. W. Lamb (R.Ragent, Hooker)...etc. etc. had grandsons Paul L, Z(Zino)L and Cecil Lamb who lived 1/2 mile due south of Coonpath School."
also found an article from the Eagle-Gazzete dated 20 Nov 1886. Under the headline "Hooker" it goes on to say: "Mr. George W. Lamb, who has been successfully engaged in the grain, coal and grocery trade for the past eight years, has sold his grocery to Crist brothers of Greencastle, Ohio, who take possession on Monday morning. Mr. Lamb has given up the grocery in order to devote his entire attention to the coal and grain trade, which has become very great. He has tendered his resignation as postmaster, which office he has held successfully ever since he began business here, and a cleverer or more efficient postmaster you could not find were you to travel the country over for miles and miles around; and Sancho Panza never thought of removing him for 'pernicious activity in politics'. His successor will probably be Mr. Sam Crist, and thus the thing will be reversed. During the last six years of Republican administration we had a Democratic postmaster, but during the remaining two years of Sancho's reform (?) administration we will have a Republican."

OBIT: Charles Samuel McDonald, son of Nathaniel Curis and Estella McDonald, was born September 20th, 1900, in Amanda Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio. He departed this life Thursday, July 17th, 1924, 12:40 a.m. at his home, 521 N. Broad Street, Lancaster, Ohio. Thus he lived to the maturity of 23 years 9 months and 17 days. In early infancy he was baptised in the Royalton M. E. Church by the Rev. Mr. Smith. He dedicated his life to Christ early in youth and united with the Wesley Chapel M. E. Church. On October the 10th, 1919, he removed his membership to the Greencastle presbyterian Church. Here he continued actively engaged in christian service until physically hindered, and and earnest christian until called to his heavenly home. Notwithstanding his ill health, he was able to complete his high school course and graduated the Lancaster High School June the 10th, 1920. It was his earnest desire to go on with his education and complete his college work, but his long seige of growing weakness would not permit it. Of his immediate family those surviving to mourn his death are his father and mother, two sisters, Nellie Florence and Arletta Alspauh, and one brother, Harold Curtis. Many other relatives and a host of friends live to mourn his departure.
A precious one from us is gone.
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home
That never can be filled.
Christain services observed in the Greencastle Presbyterian Church Saturday, July 19th at 2 p.m. Interment in the Amanda Cemtery.

YOD/POBurial: www.findagrave.com. Rufus Zaayer, 1831-1908. No documentation or photo supplied.
"Rufus Zaayer was born April 15, 1830, in Adams township, Pickaway county, Ohio, and was there bred and educated, attending the primitive schools of his day, and assisting" in the pioneer labor of clearing a homestead. At the age of seventeen years he went to live with Solomon Teagarden in Adams township, and for five years assisted him in the care of the farm, receiving for his labor a share of the crops. Ambitious then to become a land owner -he came in the fall of 1854 to Indiana, making the removal with teams, and "entered a tract of canal land in Gill township, Sullivan county, and also bought a five-acre tract, upon which was a log house and an orchard. The land was partly timber and partly prairie, and he at once began its improvement, residing there four years. Exchanging it then for a farm in the same township, he remained there two years, and then traded that property for a farm in Hamilton township. Ten years later he sold out there and bought the farm which he now owns and occupies. It contains one hundred and twenty acres of rich land, and is advantageously located about three and one-half miles east of the village of Sullivan. The land is well cultivated and improved, and has a substantia.1 set of buildings, well adapted for the use of an up-to-date farmer.
On August 23, 1854, Rufus Zaayer married Mary Alspach, who was born January 5, 1837, in Bloom township, Fairfield county, Ohio, which was likewise the birthplace of her father, Daniel Alspach. Her grandfather, John Alspach, was born in Pennsvlvania, of German parentage, and was a pioneer of Fairfield county. Ohio, where he spent his declining years. A life-long resident of Ohio, Daniel Alspach there married Leah Hummel, who was born in Pennsylvania, of German ancestors, and they became the parents of nine children, namely: Mary, Caroline, John, Julia, Ann, Eliza, Sophia, Nancy, Carol and Margaret.
Of the union of Rufus and Mary (Alspach) Zaayer, seven children have been born, five of whom have passed to the higher life, Benjamin having died at the age of seventeen years; Leah Maria at the age of thirty years; John at the age of fourteen years; Daniel at the age of thirty-four years; and Emma when but fourteen years old. Allen Zaayer, the youngest child, married Hallie Richie, and they have two children, Claude Mathers and Herbert. William Zaayer, the second son and third child in succession of birth, has been a life-long resident of Sullivan county and remains at home, the solace, comfort and mainstay of his parents. Having charge of the home farm, he is carrying on general farming and stock-raising after the most approved modern methods, and in his work is meeting with genuine success."
[A history of Sullivan County, Indiana: closing of the first century's
history of the county, and showing the growth of its people, institutions,
industries and wealth, By Lewis Publishing Company, 1909]
NOTE: The full article begins with Rufus's son William who was born in Cass Twp. It mentions a couple times "Adams Township" in Pickaway County, Ohio. There is no such township in Pickaway County.
