[T3326] John W. Dowler, owning and operating a well improved farm of one hundred and
twenty-seven acres in Madison township, was born on the 5th of April, 1856, and acquired his education in the schools of Hocking. When seventeen years of age he first beame connected with farming, which he has made his life work, sending his savings home to his father until he had at-rained his majority. He now owns the old Long homestead of one hundred and twenty-seven acres in Madison township and in the careful cultivaion of the fields has gained a measure of prosperity that entitles him to representation among the substantial and enterprising agriculturists of the community. tits success is all the more creditable by reason of the fact that it has been attained entirely through his own well-directed and untiring efforts, for he started out in life empty-handed.

1881 Mr. Dowler was united in marriage to Miss Julia A. Long, whose birth
occurred April 16, 1856. Their children are as follows: Mrs. Jennie L. Foor,

Henry GRAFENTINE

INDEX

[T114380] CENSUS: 1880 Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH; p 26
GRAFENTINE, Henry, 25y blacksmith helper b Germany, parents b Germany
", Eliza, 27y wife b OH, parents b PA

Henry Grafentine is listed in the "Declaration of Aliens", V9 p 19, country was Germany, arrived Oct. 1873, declaration date April 9, 1888. Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, Probate Court Naturalization Records 1859-1901 as posted on the county website.

NOTE: This "Grafentine" name is very unique, thus I believe the Henry Grafentine buried at Green Lawn Cem. is for this individual. They list it as Henry Grafentine, 05/02/1896 - 08/08/1896, father was William Grafentine. "The Fleshman Files" website, accessed 2008, Green Lawn Cemetery Records, Columbus, Ohio.

Henry last appears in the 1880 census in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, but then is listed in some Columbus, Ohio city directories between or including the years 1887-1892 as a tinner 1125 1/2 N. High. There are 6 results for him in this directory but it does not specify which year the result represents.

In 1900 his wife is shown as widowed. Therefore I believe the Henry Grafentine who died in 1896 and is buried in Green Lawn is the correct Grafentine and the date of birth was misread.

INDEX

[T91263] NOTE: Oddly enough Joseph's middle name is Perry; the same as his supposed father, Perry Hoshor. Joseph mother was still an ARNOLD at time of Joseph's birth according to the 1900 census, though her future husband was residing with her as a servant. Was this child, Joseph, born out of wedlock and initially took the Arnold name? If Perry Hoshor actually formally adopted him, it still would seem strange because Joseph's middle name was already Perry. Martha is shown only as single, not widowed. Was she divorced?

POB: HISTORY OF FAIRFIELD AND PERRY COUNTIES, OHIO, THEIR PAST AND PRESENT, Compiled BY A. A. Graham, W. H. BEERS & CO. 1883, p 360. Served as a prosecuting attorney 4 years, probate judge 3 years. Member of Lancaster Masonic Lodge #57, and master of the lodge 10 years. Son of Hon. Salmon Shaw, deceased, who was a member of the House of Representatives from Fairfield Co. He married Martha R. Pinney, of Lithopolis, in 1849, by the Rev. M. Z. Kreider who was at the time acting Grand Master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Ohio.

VIRGIL E. SHAW - Virgil E. Shaw was born in Lancaster. Here he was educated and studied law. He was a diligent student and a reader of books, but not a brilliant man. His legal practice was mainly office work and business before the probate court. He was elected Probate Judge by the Knownothing party and proved to be a good official. In 1856 he supported General Fremont for president and was for a time chairman of the Republican committee. Later he drifted back to his old love, the Democratic party. He was neither a good politician, nor a popular one, but better than all, he was an honest man and conscientious in his work.
