"He [speaking of Erastmus's father] was patriotic in the truest sense of the term and although at the time of the Civil war he was too advanced in years to go to the front he sent two of his sons, Erasmus and Zeno, and this meant much arduous labor to be performed by the father on the home farm. The son Erasmus became a member of the Ninetieth Indiana Regiment and was killed in the battle of Perryville when he had been in the service but eight days. When the father received the news of his death his reply was, "Send the body home and would to God I had another son for the same cause!" HISTORY OF COLUMBUS AND FRANKLIN COUNTY, OHIO, Vol. 1, William Alexander Taylor, Chicago: S.J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1909, p 765.
Resided Princeton, Indiana. Enlisted as a Sergeant on 4 Sep 1862 into Company A, 80th Infantry Regiment, Indiana. Killed on 8 Oct 1862 in Perryville, KY. Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana. (INRoster) Published in 1865-66 by Holloway.

Death certificate 21938 image. Chas. Edward Hedrick, 27 Lawn Ave., died at Mercy Hospital, Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, April 15, 1925, aged 31y 9m 11d. Occupation was an emery grinder at Hertenstiens Foundry. Died from a ruptured lung by a pice of emery from wheel. Accidental. Married to Grace Hedrick. Born July 4, 1893 in Carrol, Ohio to Pete Hedrick b OH and Susan Shoemaker b OH. Informant was wife. Buried Union Cem., April 18.
NOTE the differing of ages in all censuses and death certificate. Being born in 1893 is NOT correct as he always appeared before sister Della in censuses, and she was born in 1890. And in the 1920 census when he was still living with his mother, he was 32. He dies 5 years later and he's only 31. It is more likely he was born about the year 1888 as censuses indicate. The informant for his death certificate was his wife who he'd been married to no more than 4 years. His draft registration card is probably the safest 'informant' for his date of birth.
_Thomas HOLMES _ | |--Richard HOLMES | |_Rachel WELLS __
[T101565]
"Richard Holmes, a retired farmer and stock dealer, living at Carroll, has now passed the psalmist's span of three score years and ten, as he was born on a farm in Bloom township in 1829. His paternal grandfather was James Holmes, a native of PA., and one of the heroes of the Revolutionary war... In the usual manner of farm lads of the period, Richard Holmes spent the days of his boyhood and youth. On the 9th of June, 1874, he was united in marriage to Catherine Miller, a daughter of Peter Miller, a resident farmer of Liberty township, Fairfield Co., Ohio. Mr. Holmes had acquired his education in an old-time log schoolhouse where the methods of instruction were almost as primitive as the building occupied. He remained with his father until the latter's death in 1847, at which time he inhereited a part of the old homestead. Two years later he sold his share to Samuel Kisler and the same year he purchased a farm from his brother Thomas. In 1855 he sold the tract of land to his brother George and his brother-in-law, Deacon Whiticar, who divided the property. For many years Mr. Holmes was a buyer and shipper of stock, sending his stock to Pittsburg, Philadelphia, Baltimore and New York. His life, although quietly passed, has been a busy and useful one, and through legitimate channels of trade he has won a comfortable competence, which now enables him to live retired.
