"Michael Kramer, my father's brother, had come to live at Lithopolis. He had a son of about my own age, and we were much together. He regretted that he had left the former home in Reading, PA., talked much of the kindness of his grandfather, and mine, whom I had never seen.", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 34.
"...Uncle Michael Kramer, a half brother to my father. He had married a Miss Wells, the daughter of an old sea captain before coming to Ohio. This must have been about 1850. He was a blacksmith. Here he raised a family of four sons and two daughters. William was the elder, he served two enlistments during and following the Civil War. In the second he was stationed on Dry Tortugas Island during the incarceration there of Dr. Mudd, for assisting in the escape of the murderer of President Lincoln. After an interval he again enlisted and lost his life in the Custer Massacre on the Little Big Horn. Frank, the second son, as well as Albert, the fourth and youngest, served the community as blacksmiths, later removing to Columbus. Anna married and moved to the northern part of the state. Lydia married John Whaley". "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 25.

"Rev. John Wagenhals was born in Würtemburg, Germany, April 16, 1799. He was educated partly in his native city but later entered a Latin school at Stuttgart. In 1817, when but 18 years of age, he came to the United States. He located at Somerset, Ohio, and studied for the ministry under the Rev. Andrew Henkel. In 1820 he was ordained a minister by the Lutheran Synod of Ohio. He was immediately called to the laborious work of three counties, Carroll, Tuscarawas and Columbiana. In this work he remained nine years, and it was here in Carroll County that his first wife, a Miss Poorman, of Somerset, and mother of Dr. P. M. Wagenhals, died and was buried. In 1829 he came to Lancaster and became pastor of St. Peter's congretgation and some churches in the country. Here he labored for 15 years with success, and made many friends, among them Hon. Thomas Ewing, whose friendship lasted to the end. In 1844 he moved to Lithopolis, where he was pastor of the Lutheran Church for four years. In 1848 he returned to Lancaster and again became pastor of St. Peter's and of Trinity in the country. In 1860 he was called to Circleville, where he was pastor of the Lutheran Church for nine years. Advancing age and failing health compelled him to retire from the ministry, a work that he had faithfully and ardently followed for 50 years. In 1870 he returned with his wife to Lancaster, where they spent the years of a happy old age. He died Sept. 12, 1884, aged 85 years. He was a plain, unpretentious man, a good and effective preacher, and a model and beloved pastor.... One of his daughters was the wife of George G. Beck, a prominent business man of Lancaster. His son Samuel is a Lutheran minister of Ft. Wayne, Ind. Captain Albert Getz married his stepdaughter." Ancestry.com. Centennial history of Lancaster, Ohio, and Lancaster people . Provo, UT. "Thirty Years Ago - St. Paul's Lutheran Church located near North Berne Station celebrated the 100th anniversary of it's first pastorate. The first pastor was Rev. John Wagenhals, brothers [sic] of the late Adam Wagenhals, co-publisher and owner of the Literary Digest and Standard Dictionary. The minister accepted the pastorate on Sept. 8, 1829. Rev. J. E. Kiefer was present pastor in charge of the celebration. [Lancaster Eagle Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, Sept. 8, 1959]
"Rev. John Wagenhals, a son of Daniel and Louise (Hornung) Wagenals, was born April 16, 1799, in Gueglingen, kingdom of Wurtemberg, Germany. He attended the parochial school of his native city and received preparatory training in classical studies in the Latin school of the same place and afterward pursued his studes in the city of Stuttgart. In 1818 he emigrated to America, and landed in the city of Philadelphia, where he became acquainted with eminent ministers of the Lutheran church, who, in view of his literary attainments, induced him to devote himself to the service of the church. He continued his studies under the direction of several reputable clergymen of that early period and was licensed as a minister of the gospel September 12, 1821. On Trinity Sunday, in 1826, he was ordained at New Philadelphia, Ohio. His first pastoral charge consisted of a number of congregations in Columbiana, Carroll, and adjoining counties, which he served with great self-denial and faithfulness.... Rev. Wagenhals was one of the founders of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Columbus, Ohio, and was for many years a director and a most zealous supporter of the same... In 1870 he returned to Lancaster, where he spent the last years of his life. He died September 12, 18814, at the advanced age of 85 years 4 months and 26 days.
