SOURCE: "Portrait and Biographical Album of Champaign County, Illinois," Chapman Brothers, Chicago, 1887
EPHRAIM DRESBACH, an enterprising farmer and stock-grower of St. Joseph Township, is possessor of an estate containing 120 acres of valuable land located on section 20. He was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, near Lithopolis, Nov. 12, 1834, and is descended from German and Irish ancestry, being the son of John and Anna (HOY) DRESBACH, natives of Pennsylvania and Ohio. John DRESBACH was born in 1804. His wife, Anna, was the daughter of Philip and Elizabeth (IRELY) HOY. The Irely family were natives of Pennsylvania, but of Irish origin, and the family of Philip HOY descended from German ancestry.
After his marriage John Dresbach lived for a time in Fairfield County, Ohio, and then removed with his family to Hancock County, settling near Findlay. Not satisfied with the locality, he changed his residence to Fairfield, and afterward to Pickaway County, making the latter place a permanent settlement, and building up a homestead, where he died in the winter of 1886. He was twice married. The death of his first wife occurred in Fairfield County, in 1844. Of this union six children were born, and of the second marriage there were three.
Ephraim Dresbach passed his boyhood in Fairfield and Pickaway Counties, where he received such education as could be obtained at the country schools. After the death of his mother he made his home with relatives and began the struggle of life at a very early age. Possessing an obliging disposition he made friends, and employed himself in various branches of farm labor until he had reached his twenty-fourth year. He then united in marriage with Miss Clarissa E. CRONINGER, a native of Pickaway County, Ohio, and the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (HINES) CRONINGER. After his marriage Mr. Dresbach settled on a farm in Pickaway County, and remained there until the autumn of 1867, when he removed with his family to Champaign County, Ill. The first year he rented a farm in St. Joseph Township, and subsequently purchased his present place. Only a part of the land was broken, but he has since brought it to a fine state of cultivation. He is engaged in general farming and stock-raising, giving special attention to the raising of hogs.
Mr. and Mrs. Dresbach had a family of ten children, eight of whom are living, and recorded as follows: Elnora S. is the wife of Theodore F. Swearingen; Joseph F. is residing at home; Chrissie B. is the wife of O. Hootz; Clara L., Alma May, Arthur C., Minnie O. and Ora A. are with their parents.
In politics Mr. Dresbach reserves the right of voting for the best man, regardless of party. He is interested in public affairs, and has served as School Director, giving satisfaction in the discharge of his duties.

"Claude was a multi faceted man, and had a wide assortment of friends and family His nieces and nephews thought he was perfect. He cut their hair gave them advice and understanding. As his daughter, I have no idea where he learned to cut hair.
He was a very good musician, he gave piano lessons when in his teens and early twenties. He could play almost any instrument he picked up, but was very good and like to play piano, violin, and piccolo. I remember when I brought my clarinet home from school for the first time, he picked it up and played it as if he had always played one. I am not sure when he got his first car, but it was before 1930, and he was in love with it and all the rest that followed it. Every Sunday, he would make the long trip form
Monroe to Ohio (all 20 to 30 miles) with the family to see some of his or Ottie's brothers and sister, and their children.
Claude belonged to all the Masonic Lodges in Monroe and many other places including Canada. He became the head master, commander and the one in charge of all those orders he joined , including the Eastern Stars. He started Rainbow girls in Monroe so that I would belong to a Masonic group when I was young." From Luree Kathryn (Foor) Barber, Quinebaug, CT, July 2003 email.

Deputy State Fire Marshals... condemned the old Cannon property, formerly the old Broadway Hotel, on South Broad Street, and notifed families to vacate as soon as possible as the building must be torn down. Mr. Morrison moved out Monday into the Simpson Wright double house on Grogan street, the ill fated house in which the terrible gas explosion occurred several weeks ago when the three little children of Arthur Gloyd, who occupied the west side of the house, and the little son of M. D. Hanna, a near neighbor, were killed. Both sides of this house has been empty since the accident, the thought of the awful scene created by that explosion keeping people from renting it, but Mr. Morrison said this morning that he was not superstitious and as he had to have a place to go, he moved in on the west side of the house where the Gloyd family lived. [Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster, Ohio, Sept. 24, 1917, p 7]
1917 - "Damages Will Be Asked of the City for the Tragic Deaths" of the Three Gloyd Children and Master Herbert Hanna, Caused by a Gas Explosion Aug. 4. Arthur E. Gloyd was appointed administrator of Edna G. Gloyd, Gladys M. Gloyd and Dorothy M. Gloyd, late of Lancaster, and a bond of $100 was required in each case with Charles F. Littrell and A. E. Smith as sureties. Gladys M., Dorothy M. and Edna B. Gloyd were the minor children of Arthur E. and Cora E. Gloyd, and were victims of the gas explosion which occurred in the Simpson Wright property on Grogan street on August 4th last, each dying after they had been removed to the City Hospital. Herbert Hanna, the 9 year old son of M. D. Hanna, was also a victim of that terrible accident and died at the hospital about the same time the Gloyd children did. His father will be appointed administrator for his estate Wednesday, it is said, preparatory to bringing action for damages against the City and the petition may include the owner of the property, Simpson Wright, of Columbus. Messrs. Gloyd and Hanna are represented by Attorneys Bachman and Bachman of Columbus. [Lancaster Daily Eagle, 02 Oct 1917]
Three suits for $10,042.65 damages in each case were filed in common pleas court late this afternoon by Arthur Gloyd, administrator of Edna Belle Gloyd, aged 7; Dorothy M. Gloyd, aged 5, and Gladys M. Gloyd, aged 9... the children of the plaintiff in this case died at the City Hospital from burns received on August 4, 1917, from a natural gas explosion in the double house of defendant Wright, near the railroad, in one part of which Mr. Gloyd and his family lived at the time of the explosion. It is recited that the east side of the house had been vacant and is declared that defendant Wright had carelessly and negligently left the end of a natural gas pipe in a small room opening on the porch open and unplugged, so that when the gas was turned on it would flow into said room with the full capacity of the pipe. Defendant Wright had rented the east side of the house and the tenant was moving in on August 4th... It is said these children were on the porch in front of the double house when the gas explosion occurred from a lighted match in the hand of the tenant of defendant Simpson Wright and the clothes of the children were ignited and burned and they were thrown about 25 feet into the street by the force of the explosion and died soon after being removed to the hospital. [Lancaster Daily Gazette, Nov. 9, 1917]
OBIT: Arthur E. Gloyd, of 339 East Locust Street, 53 years of age, died at the City hospital this morning at 7:45 o'clock following a short illness. The deceased is survived by his wife and two sisters, Mrs. William Horseman of Rushville, Mrs. Sarah Baughman of Carroll, also three brothers, George of near Lancaster, John of Carroll, and Charles of Hooker Station. Funeral services will be held from the First Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. T. B. Roberts officiating. Burial will be made in Elmwood Cemeter. J. V. Halteman, funeral director in charge. [Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster, Ohio, Feb. 4, 1928]
Father Buried Beside Children, Explosion Victims.
Funeral Services for Arthur E. Gloyd of 339 E. Locust St. who died Saturday were held this afternoon at the First M. E. church. His widow survives. Mr. Gloyd was laid to rest in Elmwood cemetery by the side of his three children who were victims of one of the most appalling tragedies that ever occurred here. These small children died as the result of burns received in a gas explosion which wrecked the Gloyd home in 1917 near Maywood Mission. Gloyd was an unsuccessful democratic candidate for councilman from the 4th ward a few years ago. [Lancaster Daily Eagle, Lancaster, Ohio, Feb. 6, 1928]
NOTE: The death certificates of the three children, Dorothy May, Gladys Marie, Edna Bell, show their mother's maiden name as Cora Fosnaugh.
