Donna Ruth Foor Was Top Runner in First Senior Olympics

By Isabel Sanchez
Journal Staff Writer
Donna Ruth Foor was known for her great generosity, her great love of children and her great legs.
Foor, a winner in the first national Senior Olympics at age 76, died Thursday after an infection associated with a fall. She was 93.
In 1987, Foor, a runner, was among 60 athletes from New Mexico who qualified for the national Senior Olympics games in St. Louis. She placed third in her event, the 100-meter sprint.
"I really wasn't athletic at all when I was younger," Foor said in a newspaper interview before the games. "Women just weren't then."
She began taking exercise classes after she retired in 1973 as an executive secretary at Sandia Base, said a granddaughter, April Brennan.
Foor moved to Albuquerque from Lake Forest, Ill., in 1961 to join her daughters, Brennan said, after the death of her husband, John.
For many years in Illinois she had been a housewife and mother, Brennan said, and it was to the Foor home that neighborhood children gravitated. Up to the time of her grandmother's death, Brennan said, Foor was still in touch with some of the children of Lake Forest.
"She was a mother, first and foremost, and a grandmother, a wonderful grandmother," she said.
"Anytime you said you were coming over, she had some full-spread lunch prepared, for an army," Brennan said. "She was very generous. She's the only person in my life that wouldn't ever, ever, ever let me down. I mean never. ... She always came through."
Foor spent weekends with her grandchildren, whom she invited to her home to play in the swimming pool and on the basketball court and climbing towers.
Her exercise class, Brennan said, encouraged her to try out for the local Senior Olympics. She won her first 100-meter race, and a medal.
"She decided after that she'd better continue," Brennan said.
Foor also taught exercise classes at the Palo Duro and Bear Canyon senior centers.
Brennan recalls her grandmother saying, "Oh, look, I'm getting cellulite"_ at age 70.
"Every granddaughter and daughter in our family said she had better legs than we did," she said.
Brennan said Foor enjoyed classical music and professional wrestling, particularly Hulk Hogan.
Her grandmother became "addicted" to wrestling while watching late-night television, and was in her 80s when she saw a live World Wrestling Federation match.
"That was the first time I ever heard my grandmother cuss," Brennan said, when it appeared that a cattle prod was used on a wrestler.
Foor was still active at 93, and still driving, her granddaughter said. One day last month she broke a leg, an injury that had her in and out of the hospital. She died the day before she was to be released, Brennan said, shortly after saying to her roommate, "I'm going to sleep now."
Foor is also survived by her daughters, Lynne Brennan and Bonnie Buntjer; her grandchildren, Miles Brennan and his wife Soni, John Nellos, Aaron Brennan, Jennifer Buntjer, Andrew Brennan, Cheryl Lesmeister, Michelle Nellos and Melinda Nellos and by 11 great-grandchildren.
A grandson, Nick Nellos, died in 2002.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church, 11511 Lomas NE.
Contributions may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church or to KNME-TV in lieu of flowers

[T17413] The following info is from Linda Franks Beebe via October 2000 email:

His parents were Esquire Baker and Nancy/Ella Willard or Williard. From David's & Zachariah Taylor's death certs and 1850 Census. He [was] born either in NY or VT anytime from 1807-11. She born NY about 1811, d Licking Co. about 1849. They had four children that the 1850 Census, Newark Twp., Licking Co. (taken 27 Jul listed, Amos, age 10, John age 4, David, age 2 and Zachariah, age 10/12 (mos over yrs). Amos listed as idiot on Census. In David's Application for Civil War disabilty, dated 29 Jul 1913, his sworn statement said that he and Z. T. were placed in the Licking County Infirmary (Union Station, Ohio) about 1850 as both parents died when he was about 2 and between that year and 1855 he was indentured out to Rev. Joseph Creighton, M. E. Church and brought to Henry Creighton (a farmer) Bloom Twp. 1860 Census shows him with Henry Creighton, Bloom Twp., Lithopolis, Licking Co. Z. T.'s pension application is a little more accurate and states " I hereby, certify that the following is a true copy taken from the records of this Institution - Page-99 infirmary record November 21st, 1851-Newark Twp, Licking County- Received David Baker, aged four (4) and Zachariah Baker, aged two (2) years old, both destitute and motherless children both born in the county, now paupers by order of T. Slatten, Director. G. W. Glick, Supt. (Signed Jas R. Lucas, Supt. 29 Apr 1926." I have a copy of the original page from the institutions records sent to me from the County's records. So how old they actually were isn't certain. David used the DOB of 13 Dec 1847 (from pension records and cemetery inscription). Don't know what happened to Esquire or Amos or John. Z. T. is my great grandfather.

From his pension application:

David enrolled at Columbus, 16 Aug 1864 and served in Company A, 176 Reg. of the Ohio Infantry until discharged in Nashville, TN 14 Jun 1865. His rank was private. 15 Oct 1903 he entered the Mountain Branch National Soliders Home in TN for treatment. Since leaving the service, he lived in Fairfield Co., Fl 1901-02, then to Home and back to Lithopolis. David was married three times, 22 Apr 1869 at Canal Winchester, OH (have marriage cert) - 11 Aug 1898 (she died) to Martha Jane Kramer.; 20 Jul 1899 near Lithopolis, - 23 Oct 1908 (divorced) to Mary Elizabeth Kinser: 29 Jun 1915 at Lutheran Church, Fairfield Co. - until his death to Alice Bradlely Poling

David started out as a farm worker, Census 1870, 1880. Became a fruit and berry grower at least by the 1900 Census. With the exceptions noted in his pension application, he lived his life in Lithopolis, Bloom Twp. as verified by various Censuses. The 1920 Census shows him living on Columbus St., in Lithopolis.

"In the days of his infancy, Henry Boyer was brought to Fairfield county, where he has since resided. He was born in Schuylkill county, PA., Nov. 24, 1837, and it was the following year that his parents came to the Buckeye state. He is a son of John and Susanna (Rodebaugh) Boyer, who were also natives of Pennsylvania. Loading some of their houshold effects on a wagon they drove accross the country to Carroll, Ohio, arriving in about the middle of November, 1838. They took up their abode upon the farm where the subject of this review now lives and the father there reached the age of sixty-eight years, while his wife passed away at the age of seventy years. In their family were eight children: Isaac, George and Jacob, who are now deceased; Charles; Mary Ann; Henry; William and Sarah.

"No event of special importance occurred to vary the routine of farm life for Henry Boyer in his youth. The sun shown down on many a field which he plowed and planted, as he assisted his father in the work of cultivating and improving the land. Throughout the years of his manhood he has carried on the occupation to which he was reared and his labors have resulted in bringing to him a very comfortable living. He was married in 1860 to Miss Kate M. Hummell, a daughter of Isaac and Magdaline (Miller Hummell... The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Boyer has been blessed with five children: William, a resident of Star City, Indiana; Calvin, who makes his home in San Francisco, California; Annie, the wife of M. E. Brett, of San Francisco; Franklin, who died at the age of sixteen months; and George, a resident of Bloom township. It was in December, 1874, when Mr. Boyer and his family removed to the old homestead, where he has since remained. For twelve years he resided on the southwest corner of Bloom township and his attention has ever been given to the work of cultivating the soil, his labors being attended by a high degree of success. In 1864 he was in the government employ, but during the greater part of his life he has given his time and energies to agricultural pursuits. His work is carefully conducted and he is systematic and methodical in all that he undertakes. As the years have passed his diligence has brought to him a comfortable competence and he is numbered amount the well-to-do and up-to-date scientific farmers of his adopted county. "A Biographical Record of Fairfield and Perry Counties, Ohio, S. J. Clarke Pub., Co., 1902, p 340-341.

[T95672] NOTE: This may be the Abraham and Sarah "Krist" who are in Plain twp., Franklin Co., Ohio by 1830. Both are buried in Smith/Union cemetery in that township:

KRIST: Abraham, Aug 25, 1782-Sept 8, 1862, aged 86y 13d
", Sarah, wife of Abraham, was born in the State of, Pennsylvania [broken]

"Confirmation" would be that in 1819 an Abraham Crist was baptized in Fairfield Co., Ohio - the parents being "Abraham and Sara". The birthdate of the baptized child was 21 Sep 1816. Another Abram Crist is buried in this same cemetery: Abram, died June 12, 1891, aged 74y 8m 22d - and the figured date of birth would be the same: Sep. 21, 1816. I believe that this Abraham and Sara Crist shown as the parents in Fairfield Co., Ohio, baptismal records is the same couple who went to Plain twp. by 1830.

CENSUS: 1850 Plain Twp., Franklin Co., OH; visitation 198/200

NOTE: Abraham and Sara MAY have had another child named Mary who married Massie Clymer 26 May 1825 in Franklin Co., Ohio. The name is spelled "Krist" on marriage record, and Abraham Crist, shown here, is sometimes also shown as "Krist". A lineage posted in 2004 to ancestry.com shows a Mary Crist b 25 May 1807 died 28 Jan 1887 in IN, buried in Waymire Cem., Duck Creek Twp., Madison Co., IN was the dau. of Abraham CHRIST b Germany and Sarah QUEEN b Ireland. In the 1860 census, "Massy Clymer" is 55 b DE, and Mary is 50 b PA (Duck Creek Twp., Madison Co., IN, p 147).

[T4776] DOB/DOBap: "Churchbooks of the Betzer Union/Zion Reformed Church, 1817-1881, Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH", Fairfield County Chapter OGS, 1994 -- undoubtedly one of the dates is in error. This shows she was baptised before brith. My guess is that the baptism date would be JUN rather than JAN. Listed as Elisabth Morehart b 13 Jan 1826 bapt. 04 Jan 1826, parents Christian & Lidia Morehart, sponsor was Elisabeth.

In father's 1860 partion records it mentions all the children as well as "the children of Elizabeth Morehart McFarland, deceased, who were Mary, Lydia and Amanda McFarland".

Have seen Elisabeth's d.o.b. listed as January 18, 1826, in undocumented info submitted to familytreemaker.com.

DOB/DOD/POBurial: "Cemeteries of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH", Fairfield Co., Ohio, Chapter OGS, 1996. Age of death given as Feb. 12, 1852. Died at 26y 1m 23d. DOB figured from this age is 20 Dec 1825.
