My mother's cremains were buried after a small service on November 3rd, 2007 at the cemetery. The service took place in the mausoleum at 11 a.m. Afterward, we all went to the VFW for a luncheon. I stayed back with my husband in order to see my mother placed in her grave, and to toss a penny in the grave as well. My father had always wanted to go to Alaska. It was his dream for many years. He never got the opportunity. When some friends of mine went there a few years ago, I asked them to bring back a coin. I've had it in my possesion for 2-3 years, hoping not to use it for many years to come. The act may seem a tad silly, but it meant something to me to be able to give my dad a piece of Alaska. "Mrs. Catharine M. Guseman, widow of the late Jacob Guseman, is the oldest living resident of Lancaster. Her maiden name was Catharine M. Pfifer; her father's name was Jacob Pfifer. She was born in Pittsburg, PA., Dec. 18, 1801. Her father moved from Pittsburg to Huntington, PA. In 1806 he emigrated to Fairfield County, Ohio, and settled one mile west of Lancaster. While living there she remembers going to town with her mother to trade with Rudolph Pitcher, who kept a store and a tavern in the same building on Main Street. She was often with her mother gathered wild plums, in a thicket, on the ground where now stand the store buildings of Christian Keller and E. H. Binninger. The plat of Lancaster was then a wilderness, except three or four streets. On these streets were a number of small buildings, but very much scattered. The Hockhocking River was then quite a large stream. When Catharine was eighteen years of age her father moved to Lithopolis and operated a tannery. She came to Lancaster and has ever since resided here, a period of seventy-eight years. She was married to Jacob Guseman, October 10, 1824, and in 1832, moved upon th elot where she has ever since lived. She has known Lancaster for 91 years, and has witnessed it's gradual growth from a wilderness to a city." Original data: Wiseman, C. M. L.. Martha Shearer 4
Source Citation: Year: 1850; Census Place: Canal Winchester, Fairfield, Ohio; Roll M432_677; Page: 149A; Image: 45.
To further support the spelling of her maiden name, the birth certificates of her children Minnie L. and Aldon both list her name as Frances Shearer. Others may also, but these two are the only ones that I have found so far.
