 __

|--William Maclay AWL
|
|__

INDEX

[T70496] William Maclay Awl was born at Harrisburg, PA, May 24, 1799. For two years he studied anatomy, surgery and chemistry under Samuel Agnew, and also attended lectures at the University of PA. Ater several years of practice in PA he walked from Sunbury to Ohio in 1826, first locating at Lancaster. From there he removed to what was then known as Centerville, and it was at his suggestion that this name was changed to Lithopolis. He also practiced at Somerset, but from 1833 until his death his home was at Columbus except for two years at Dayton. He located at Columbus while the epidemic of Asiatic cholera was raging in that community, and displayed great zeal and knowledge in treating the disease. He looked after the cholera patients at the state penitentieary and in 1836 became physician to the penitentiary.

While at Lithopolis, he had in 1827, in an operation on the neck, tied the left internal carotid artery. He was the first surgeon west of the Alleghanies to ligate this artery... He was a leader in inducing the Legislature to found an asylum for the insane, and became the superintendant when that asylum was opened at Columbus in 1838. In 1837 he had also suggested the taking of steps by the State for the education of the blind. The institution for the education of the feebleminded was established as a result of his effort in 1865. He was a physician for the blind asylum from 1873 until his death on Nov. 19, 1876. He was a founder of the American Psychiatric Society. Ancestry.com. Ohio . Provo, UT. MyFamily.com, Inc.. 2004. OBIT: Death of Silas B. McClelland. Silas B. McClelland, one of the old residents of Decatur, died Sunday night at 11:25 o'clock at his home 511 West Macon Street in the presence of his wife and four children, aged 63 years 6 months and 14 days. The deceased had been in poor health since October when he contracted a cold. On May 8, he was taken to Osceola, Iowa, by his son, Frank, to visit his two sisters and while there he became quite ill. He was brought home Tuesday, May 29th and since then he has received the constant and watchful care of his family.

Mr. McClelland was born in Holmes Co., Ohio, Nov. 19, 1824 and he came to Decatur with Abram Kramer in 1852. He purchased a quarter of a block on East Main street and engaged in the wagon-making and blacksmithing business alone for awhile, afterwards being associated with A. Kramer inthe enterprise. In March '73 he sold out to Mr. Kramer and removed to his farm in Moultri county, where he resided until the fall of 1800, when he returned to Decatur where he has since resided. On Aug. 30, 1856, Sophia Whitehurst, of Ohio, became his wife. The surviving children are B. F. McClelland, principal of the public schools at Sullivan, IL., Mrs. Ida B. Stout, wife of Joseph Stout; Mrs. Lillie Walker, wife of I. D. Walker, and Sherman McClelland, all of Decatur. The fifth child, Katie, died in 1876 aged nearly 7 years. Mr. McClelland will be remembered as one of the earliest and most successful business men of our city, a man of strict integrity and very methodical in his habits. He became a member of the United Brethern Church when 20 years of age, and for 43 years he has been one of the liberal contributors to that denomination, besides lending his aid to other societies and doing what he could to advance the growth of Decatur. Realizing that he might pass away soon the deceased had settled all his business affairs and had signed his will. He had lived a blameless and exemplary life and was prepared for the final summons. The fiuneral will take place from the family residence at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, Rev. L. Field officiating. [Decatur Daily Republican, Decatur, IL., June 4, 1888]

The funeral of the late Silas B. McClelland took plast last evening from the family residence, Rev. L. Field presiding elder of the United Brethern Church, Decatur district, conducting the impressive services. 'The memory of the just,' from Proverbs was the text of the sermon. There were floral offerings in profusion. Appropriate music was funrished by Mrs. A. W. Conklin, Mrs. Harry Crea, S. M. Lutz and Howard Diller. Interment Greenwood cemetery. Messrs. H. F. May, J. R. Gorin, W. F. Busher, A. T. Davis, S. P. Hoy and A. W. Conklin served as pallbearers. [Decatur Republican, Decatur, IL, June 7, 1888]

Bluffton Evening News, April 7, 1910

FUNERAL OF AGED CITIZEN WILL BE HELD SUNDAY AFTER NOON IN THIS CITY

Eli Zoll, one of the county's deeply venerated aged citizens, passed away at 5:30 o'clock Friday evening at his home in Travisville, three miles south of Bluffton. He had been in failing health for some time from Bright's disease, but his last serious illness which confined him to to his home was only about ten days duration.
The decedent was born in Fairfield County, Ohio on October 13, 1830, a son of Jacob and Mary Zoll. He was 79 years of age last October. He was married at Findlay, Ohio to Miss Caroline Alspach in 1850, and they came to Wells County in the year 1880, and first settled on a farm west of Murray, where they lived for a number of years. Later, they sold this farm and bought another place three miles south of Bluffton, where they resided several years before moving to Bluffton to reside. They lived in this city at two different periods, a total of four or five years. Three years ago they bought property at Travisville and retired to a quiet life in the little village to spend their remaining years.
There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Zoll eight children of whom four, two boys and two girls, are dead. The four surviving children are Edward and Milton of Bluffton; I.C. Zoll, west of Murray; and David Zoll, living southwest of Bluffton. No brothers or sisters survive. He was the last of a family of nine.
Mr. Zoll was one of the country's honored soldiers of the Civil War and served 12 months in the 21st Ohio regiment, after enlisting at Findlay. He was a member of Lew Dalley Post, G.A.R. of Bluffton, and the post will attend the funeral in a body.
The funeral services will be held at the First Reformed Church in this city at three o'clock Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. S.E. Slater, pastor of the Lutheran church of Uniondale of which Mr. Zoll was a member.
Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery.
