INDEX

[22791] "My full name is Harold Evan Drummond. I am an only child. My mother was Catherine Street", from January 1998 email of Dr. Evan Drummond.

"Dr. Evan Drummond Ph.D - Senior Associate Director

Dr. Drummond is a professor in the Food & Resource Economics department and is the author of a standard text in his field Agricultural Economics. He has won numerous teaching awards. Before joining the Honors program he was interim dean and assistant dean for undergraduate affairs in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Among other things, he was instrumental in the design and implementation of the Residential Honors College at Hume Hall.
Dr. Drummond can answer questions regarding: The Honors Program, Advising in Hume and Hume Technical Assistance." [University of Florida website, 2007]

From email of May 2007: Ray and Velma Foor Drummond are my paternal grandparents. Ray was a Methodist minister who worked in northern Colorado and Wyoming going into communities where there was no church and establishing one. As he got the congregation established, they moved on to another unserved community. One of those communities was Lander, Wyoming (not Leander). Several years ago my father went to a high school reunion there, so they were there in the early 1930's.

I think (I will check it out with the authority) that my father was born on June 8, 1916 in Xenia , Ohio . He is one of four sons Ray and Velma had-Don, Harold, Wendell, and William in that order. Wendell and William live here in Gainesville , so at the next visit I will get full names, birthplace and date. They married a pair of sisters-Shirley and Venus. The latter passed away this past fall when we were on sabbatical in sourthwest China .

My father married Erma Catherine Street (Drummond) on Aug. 31, 1939. I was born in Salt Lake City , Utah a true war-baby as my father was in the South Pacific. My mother welded Liberty ships up through six months when he left. I was 23 months when he returned. My mother died in the 1980's and my father has remarried to Josephine. They live in Albuquerque . I will try to get more specific information.

I am married to Mary Ellen Glenn (Drummond). She was born on June 2, 1946 in Normal , Illinois and we were married on April 5, 1969. We have two kids-Laura Katherine Drummond Lozada, born May 7, 1973 in Stillwater, OK and Eric Glenn Drummond born May 4, 1977 in Edmund, OK (I will check dates with my wife this evening).

I am going to check with both of our kids to get all of the correct facts on that piece of the family and will convey it to you.

Ray died in about 1951 and Velma was killed in an auto accident outside of Van Wert in 1967 or 68. After Ray's death, she moved to Bowling Green and I visited her frequently when I was a graduate student at Purdue. I remember one Thanksgiving gathering in Van Wert getting into a strong argument with some of Velma's relatives because of my anti-war ( Viet Nam ) sentiments. Ray and Velma are burried in Greeley , Colorado .

SACKRITER, WILBUR
STEWART, ESTELLA

POBurial: Florence M., George, Wilbur J. are the three Sackriter's listed as being buried in Riverside Cemetery in PIONEER BURIAL PLACES LOCATED IN THE NORTHWEST SECTION OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, ILLINOIS (1958-1959) .

"George Sackrider. For a place of its size, Mohaomet is blessed with an exceptionally large number of wide-awake energetic business men, and prominent in the list for the past score of years has been in the subject of this sketch, who is a son of Peter Sackrider, who was born in Germany, Oct. 18, 1835. Believing that America offered better opportunities to an ambitious young man, Peter Sackriter [spelled with a 't' here] emigrated to these hospitable shores and having learned the butcher's business in Columbus, Ohio, proceeded to work at that calling there until 1858, when he located in Edgar county, Illinois. When the Civil War came on, he enlisted and loyally served in the ranks until peach had been declared. Returning home he then conducted a meat business in Piatt county for a few years, also engaging in the manufacture of brick. At the last-named occupation he later was employed in Mahomet, and at this writing is living retired at his home in Anderson, Illinois.

"The nativity of George Sackrider took place near Columbus, Ohio, August 2, 1858. He grew to manhood in this state, and has had ro rely mainly upon his own efforts in the acquisition of an education. In fact, he may justly be termed a self-made man, for he has had his own way to make, and has nobly struggled against the numerous difficulties which confronts one who starts out without means or influence. In 1878 he joined his father at Mahomet, and for over ten years was employed in the brick yard here, thoroughly learning the trade. He became the owner of the plant about 1891, by purchase, and since then he has greatly increased the capacity of the factory and the superiority of the manufactured article. From four to five hundred thousand bricks are made here each year, and there has been a growing demand for the
product, which compares favorably with the best grades in the market. Fairness characterizes all of our subject's dealings, and he possesses the respect of the entire community.

On the 24th of December, 1882, Mr. Sackriter married Fonnie Morse, daughter
of John H. and Sarah Ann (Cox) Morse, natives of Ohio and Indiana, respectively. The former, who was born October 18, 1835, was a son of Henry Morse, one of the pioneers of the Buckeye state, and originally of
Canada. J. H. Morse followed the calling of a carpenter, and was a citizen of Mahomet for many years. The only child of Mr. and Mrs. Sackriter is Lloyd, who is a promising youth, now attending the home schools. Another son, Wilbur, died when five years of age.

The home of the Sackriter family is a very attractive one, and no pains or expense have been spared in'improvingthe property. Fine fruit and shade trees and a well kept lawn add greatly to the beauty of the premises, and everything is kept up in a thrifty manner. In local elections our subject is independent, while in national issues he uses his franchise in favor of the nominees of the Prohibition party. He has never desired public offices, but
served for two terms as a member of the town board. Fraternally he is an Odd
Fellow and now holds the office of noble grand in the Mahomet lodge, while in the Modern Woodmen of America he also holds an official position. Everything which affects the general prosperity of this community is of deep interest to him, and he faithfully meets all of the obligations which devolve upon him as a citizen. "Jacob Whitehurst was born March 1, 1830, in Bloom township... his parents being John and Margaret (Showalter) Whitehurst who were natives of Rockingham county, Virginia. The grandtather, Jacob Showalter, was also born in Rockingham county, and it was for him that our subject was named. In his family were eight sons and eight daughters. The father came to Fairfield county in the fall of 1829 and first located in Bloom township, near Greencastle. In the spring of 1845, however, he removed to the farm upon which Jacob Whitehurst is now living. The father was a carpenter by trade and at one time conducted a furniture shop in this county, but subsequently gave his entire attention to agricultural pursuits. He was a man of high moral character and strict principles, was industrious and energetic, and his life work was such as to commend him to the esteem of all. He served as school director and also as supervisor. By his marriage to Margaret Showalter, John Whitehurst became the father of eleven children. Those still living are: Joseph, born in 1823; Norton, born in 1825; Jacob in 1836; Elizabeth in 1837; and William in 1846. Those who have passed away are: Hannah, born in 1827; Sophia, born in 1832; Susana, in 1835; Mary Ann, in 1840; one who died in infancy; and John, born in 1843. The father died March 17, 1856, at the age of fifty-five years, and his wife passed away September 5, 1879, in her seventy-eighth year.
