The following William Cormany is found in the 1850 census of Lancaster, Fairfield Co., Ohio.
W. A. CORMANY, insurance agent, is a native of Ohio. He was born in 1841, just before his parents reached Lithopolis, Ohio, to which place they were emigrating from Pennsylvania. He attended school in Lancaster, Ohio until he reached the age of ten years; he then went to work at telegraphy, but the employment being too confining he hired out to a carpenter; he worked at this for some little time until an accident occurred near ending his life. Then he gave up carpentering and tried printing, working three years in the Lancaster Gazette office; then went from Lancaster to Cincinnati, Ohio, and there engaged himself to the Cincinnati Commercial. He worked here six years, the last three having charge of the show bill department of that office. In 1861, he enlisted in the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was in thirty-three hard-fought battles, among which were Shiloh, Stone River, Fort Donelson, Chickamauga, etc. He was one of the men that tore the Confederate flag off of the State House at Nashville, Tenn. He was one of the firing squad at the burial of Gen. Nelson, at Louisville, Ky. He was captured by John Morgan and held as a hostage for one of Morgan's men. He was also captured at Stone River, and was confined in Libby Prison for several months. He was mustered out of the service in 1864 and went to Chicago where he became one of the publishers of the Voice of the Fair, a daily paper published under the management of S. P. Rounds during the Sanitary Fair held that year in Chicago. He then went to Mount Carroll, Ill., and published the Mount Carroll Mirror. In 1866 he left for Kansas with but $350. On his way and while in St. Joe, Mo., he was robbed. He arrived in Fort Scott with $50. He formed a partnership here with Oscar Edwards and resurrected the Fort Scott Monitor, the firm being Cormany & Edwards. In two years he sold his interest in the Monitor, and in 1869, went into partnership with J. S. Emmert in the real estate business. Shortly afterward they took into the firm W. A. Shannon. In 1870, Emmert & Kellar bought the interest of Cormany & Shannon. He then went into the insurance business, making the first year only $150. In 1881 he formed a partnership with A. Graff, the name of the firm being Cormany & Graff. He has been a member of the School Board, Secretary of the Board of Trade, and Secretary of the Second Ward Republican Committee for fourteen years. In 1864, he married Miss Emmert; they have six children. He is a member of the I. O. O. F. and G. A. R. He is now special agent and adjuster of the North British & Mercantile Insurance Company of London and Edinburgh, and has charge of the company's business in Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and the Indian Territory. Death: 31 Dec 1957, age 88. Mrs. Hettie Jane Carpenter daughter of George and Isabell Helber, of near Logan, Ohio, was born November 14, 1869, and departed this life in Columbus, December 31, 1957, aged 88 years 1 month and 17 days. She was married to Abel Carpenter, January 17, 1889. To this union was born ten children, three sons, Clifford, Russell and Walter of Canal Winchester, Ohio, seven daughters, Mrs. O.P. Smith, 222 Memorial St., Coal Grove, Ohio, Mrs. Russell Jones, 417 Harrison Ave., Lancaster, Ohio, Mrs. Omer Manson, Groveport, Ohio, Mrs. Russell Williamson, 117 Prospect St., Mansfield, Ohio, Mrs. John Bunn, 509 Parkview, Mansfield, O., Mrs. Carol Miller, 1060 Brierwood Rd., Mansfield, O., Mrs. Ray Allis, 164 N. Hayden Ave., Columbus, O., where she was residing at the time of her illness. Also survived by twenty-on grandchildren and forty-one great grandchildren. Her husband, Russell and Clifford preceded her in death. She was converted at the age of 14 and joined Pleasant Valley Church, near Logan, O. Many times she spoke of and rejoiced in the experience to her family, friends and neighbors. After moving to Canal Winchester, she and her husband joined the nazarene Church of Lithopolis, as charter members, being devoted to it until death. She was a life member of the Woman's Missionary Society. Her life was a challenge to all, being a real example of a true Christian life. The power of God was often felt in her presence. The following in her own words, was written three years ago for her last rites, tells her experience: --"I was saved 74 years ago, in the fear of our Lord...".
NOTE: There seems to be an error in the cemetery book, "Cemeteries of Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH", Fairfield County Gen. Soc., Chapter OGS, 1996". On page 179 there is one listing for a Hettie Carpenter, but it appears to be data from TWO Hettie Carpenters. This data in the book supposedly comes from the cemetery's database, and not a tombstone inscription. The info says...
CARPENTER, Hettie nee Howard, born Jan. 1, 1869, died Jan. 1, 1957*, aged 88y* (2nd add, part III, lot 301, gr 1) [NOK: Vernon Carpenter].
The asterick is necessary in their listing because the database was old, and you couldn't put in just the year. When just the year was listed, they put in Jan. 1 for the rest of the date. Therefore, the info was just 1869-1957.
There were TWO Hettie Carpenters. One was the wife of Vernon Carpenter and her maiden name was Howard. So part of the above info seems to reflect her data. The other Hettie Carpenter was the wife of Abel, and the dates of 1869-1957 match her data, as well as the burial location, as Abel is buried in the same location, grave 2.
The Hettie Carpenter with the maiden name of HOWARD, later married a MARBURGER. Her listing in the book is on page 268...
MARBURGER, Hettie nee Carpenter, parents unknown, born Oct. 8, 1893 OH, died June 27, 1976, aged 82y. (2nd add, part ***, lot 362 N 1/2, gr 1) [NOK: Kenneth, Vernon Carpenter, sons/Herbert R. Carpenter, son/ Gertrude Damsel, Pauline Hall].
Note that it incorrectly shows her maiden name here as Carpenter, when in reality it was a prior maiden name.
