BENSON Carl E. Benson, Lancaster, passed away June 14, 2008. He was born December 2, 1920 in Pleasantville, OH and later moved to Carroll. He was a graduate of Carroll High School, attended Ohio Institute of Aeronautics School in Columbus. Attended Airplane Mechanics School in Lincoln, Nebraska and went to Chanute Field as an Electric Specialist. He served 2 1/2 years overseas in the South Pacific and received 5 bronze battle stars and 1 silver battle star along with other medals. He never had a furlough during this time and had only 1 overnight pass. General Douglas McCarther said, "No one is going home until it is over." Carl worked for Mackel Insurance Co. as a safety engineer; he ran an engraving business and made furniture as a hobby. Carl is survived by his wife, Mildred Benson; brother, Neil Benson; sister, JoAnne Vance, all of Lancaster; sister-in-law, Edith Benson; and many nieces and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by his parents Harry E. and Edna H. Benson, brother Howard E. Benson. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at The Lancaster Church of the United Brethren in Christ, 1125 Pleasantville Road with Pastor Greg Voight officiating. Burial will follow the service at Betzer Cemetery, Carroll. Friends may visit from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Monday at HALTEMAN-FETT & DYER FUNERAL HOME.
