CHRISTIAN CALVIN FOOR, proprietor of the Ashville Hotel, at Ashville, also conducts the leading livery business in the city and is one of the valued citizens. He was born March 1, 1860, in Bloom township, Fairfield County, Ohio, and is a son of George and Eliza (Weimer) Foor.
The Foor family was established in Fairfield County by the grandparents of Christian C. Foor, who came to Ohio from Berks County, Pennsylvania. Both parents of our subject were born in Ohio.. They were substantial farming people and members of the German Reformed Church. Six sons and three daughters were born to them, namely: William; Christian C., of this sketch; Franklin; Harvey, deceased ; Bertha, wife of Harvey Mohart; Norton, deceased ; Emma, deceased, who was the wife of Herbert Weimer; Addie, wife of Luther Heller; and Albert.
Christian C. Foor was reared on his father's farm and was educated in the Egypt township district school, which he left at the age of 17 years. From 1877 until 1883 he worked on a farm at Marcy. In 1885 he moved to the
farm of H. M. Dunick, on which he resided for six years, engaged in farming, and then removed to the farm of W. H. Pontius in Walnut township, Pickaway County, where he was successfully engaged in farming for the 11 years following. In 1902 he settled on the farm of W. H. Blue, in Walnut township, where he remained two years. In the fall of 1904 he moved to Ashville and purchased the Ashville Hotel and the adjoining property, which Mr. Foor utilizes as a first-class livery and boarding stable. He is one of Ashville's enterprising business men.
On June 17, 1883, Mr. Foor was married (first) to Lucinda Swoyer, who was a daughter of Jacob and Mary Swoyer. Mrs. Foor had been a school mate of Mr. Foor's, the families being neighbors in Bloom township. Mrs. Foor died November 5, 1894, the mother of four children, viz.: Walter, born August 25, 1883, who died November 6, 1903; Oscar, born October 6, 1888, who is a student in the Ashville High School; Claude Earl, born May 22, 1891, who is a student in the Ashville schools ; and one child that died in infancy. Mr. Foor was married (second) to Mary .Spindler, who was a daughter of George and Alice Spindler. They had one child, Earl Spindler, who died aged three months. Mrs. Foor died November 29, 1903.
Mr. Foor is a self-made man. His present financial condition has been brought about entirely through his own industry and good management. He is an ideal landlord, having an affable manner and a pleasing, friendly personality. The guests at the Ashville Hotel are made to feel at home and the trade of the house is constantly on the increase. Mr. Foor is a member of Lodge No. 747, I. O. O. F., at Ashville.

"I then visited numerous individuals who kindly gave me information passed on to them by earlier Foor researchers. This data consisted of copies of newspaper articles, a note which appeared earlier in the Pioneer Historical Society Quarterly (4) and other material related by A. F. Foor which appears in the Everett Free Library. All information pointed to Johann Lehnhart Fuhr being the progenator of many of the Foors in Bedford County but NO REFERENCES were available to provide meaningful evidence.
"Contrary to the information passed to the present generation of Foors by others, there is NO EVIDENCE that John Fuhr, son of Johann Leonhart Fuhr, migrated to, or even visited, Bedford County, PA. Indeed, the facts given above clearly contradict this assertion.... Where John Foor (Fuhr) senior who settled in Bedford County came from, or who his ancestors were, remains a mystery. Information that he settled in Ray's Cove sometime around 1788 and that he was the father of twelve children has been passed to the present generation. One would assume, and someone has stated, that this information was taken from an old German Bible. If such a written account remains in existence it should be brought forward, notarized, and presented as crucial evidence. Otherwise, the precise account of John Foor's children, like information regarding the origin of John Foor himself, will remain as a missing portion of the Foor heritage". Who is this Roberta? She married a man as young as her supposed children. The children's mother's name was always shown as Dora on censuses, but only referred to as "wife" in husband's obit (he killed himself). Is it possible that their mother, Dora, who'd be about 38 in 1930, died sometime between the census year of 1920 and he married this Roberta before he died in 1927?

The following from the WEHR message board at ancestry.com, posted by Derek Hartman 23 Jan 2003:
I have some more info on Susannah Elizabeth Furr's daughter, Susannah.
She married Solomon Hartman (b. 1788) in 1808 in Heidelberg, PA. They had nine children:
Solomon Hartman-1809-1883
John Hartman-1811-?
Ruben Hartman-1812-1878
Susan Hartman-1815
Jonas Hartman-1817-1895
Harmon Hartman-1819-1877
Philip Hartman-1821-1896
Ann Hartman-1824-1898
Joseph Hartman-1827-1881
According to the book "The History of St. Joseph Co., Michigan," Solomon and Susannah moved to Wayne Co., OH in 1815, then to St. Joseph Co., MI in 1829. Solomon died in 1830 and is buried in St. Joseph Co. I don't know the story, but Susannah died in 1858 and is buried in Johnson Co., Iowa, where her sons Jonas, Joseph, and possibly Ruben, relocated to. Joseph is my ggg grandfather.
