NAME/DOB/DOBap/POBap/Parentage: "St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lithopolis, Bloom Township, Fairfield Co., OH, 1853-1920", Fairfield Co. Chapter OGS, 1994, p 31. DOB shown is 25 Jan 1859 rather than 1849.
Believe John D. was married to a Harriet KERNs. Several people were baptised on one day at St. John's, and in order they included John D., then a "Harry KERNS", then three of his children. I believe the "Harry Kerns" is probably his wife, Harriet -- although the birth year doesn't match for Harriet, neither does John D.'s when comparing the church records to the tombstone record.
Both John D. and Harriet E. BISHOP were confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Church by Rev. O. S. Oglesby on October 7, 1888, "St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lithopolis, Bloom Township, Fairfield Co., OH, 1853-1920", Fairfield Co. Chapter OGS, 1994, p 44.

JOHN D. BISHOP.
John D. Bishop, a well known and progressive agriculturist of Madison township, is a native son of this county, having been born on the farm where he still resides. In 1807 John Bishop, an uncle of Jacob Bishop, the father of our subject, located on the farm which was the birthplace of Jacob Bishop and also of John D. Bishop and which is now owned and occupied by the latter. The property comprises one hundred and eighty-seven and a half acres and the deed thereto was signed by Andrew Jackson. Jacob Bishop, whose birth occurred in 1812, passed away in 1883, in the faith of the Baptist church. In politics he was a Jacksonian democrat and took an active interest in public affairs, serving as assessor for several years and also as land appraiser for some time. He was recognized throughout the community as a man of sound judgment and keen discrimination and his advice was as freely given as it was sought. His wife, whose natal year was 1822, bore the maiden name of Catharine Ordell. Unto this worthy couple were born the following children: Mary, Henry, John D., Edson, Catharine, Sydney, Irene and Minnie, now living; and George and Louisa, who have passed away.
Throughout his business career John D. Bishop has been successfully engaged in agricultural pursuits, cultivating and improving the old home farm which has now been in possession of the family for more than a hundred years. He follows progressive and modern methods in the conduct of his farming interests, the fields yielding golden harvests annually as a reward for the care and labor he bestows upon them.
In 1878 Mr. Bishop was united in marriage to Miss Harriet Emma Treese, by whom he has the following children : Maud M.; Catharine E.; Octavia; and Jacob Edson, who is a student in the Ohio State University.
Politically Mr. Bishop is a stalwart democrat and has acted in the position of assessor for fifteen years, his service during ten years of that time being continuous. His religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Lutheran church and he is well known and highly esteemed throughout the county in which he has spent his entire life.

NAME: "Portrait and Biographical Record, Randolph Co., IN", 1894, A. W. Bowen & Co., Chicago.
Lewis S. Bowser a well known and popular resident of White River Township, is a native of Ohio, born June 18, 1842, at the town of Lithopolis. His father, Michael Bowser, was a native of Berkeley county, Virginia, as was also his mother, whose maiden name was Margaret Altey. Shortly after their marriage, Michael and Margaret Bowser emigrated to Ohio, thence, about 1856, moved to Decatur, Illinois, where they resided for a limited period, and then took up their residence in Wayne county, Indiana, where they lived until their removal to Darke county, Ohio, four years later. In 1867, Mr. Bowser purchased a farm, consisting of 160 acres in Randolph County, Indiana, upon which he passed the remainder of his days, departing this life December 13, 1890, at the advanced age of eighty-one years. His widow survives at a green old age, living at this time on the home place in the township of White River. The following are the names of the children born to Michael and Margaret Bowser: John E., Lewis S., Mrs. Hannah Teagarden, Mrs. Margaret Lasley, George H., Rachel, Mary V. and Luvenia, the last two of whom died in early childhood. By occupation Michael Bowser was a shoemaker, which trade he followed at various places until his removal to Darke County.

means... in prior entries, if a person was one month of age, it is listed as
1/12, and if a person's age is unknown or not certain, it appears he put
parenthesis around it such as (18). Perhaps it indicates "about 27-30 years

DOD/DOB/POBurial: Tombstone photo shows name as William Rainier, born Dec. 6, 1831, died May 12, 1905. [Harrison Co., Iowa, GenWeb website, tombstone photos, accessed 2007]
Also buried in that cemetery are Jessie G. and Annie R. who share a stone. Bottom says "Children of Wm. & Malvina Rainier". Tombstone image is too small to read dates, but it looks like they both died, possibly a day apart from each other, on March 9th and 10th, 1876.
RAINER - William RAINER, one of Harrison County's successful farmers, living on section 17, of Union Township, has been a resident of the county since June, 1870. At first he rented a farm of William RIDDLE, giving him a share of the crop for the use of the land. The same year he bought a part of the land comprising his present farm, and constructed a "dug-out" on the same, in which he lived during the two years he rented land. His own land cost him $8 per acre; he purchased the same of the railroad company, and while he was erecting his "dug-out" he lived within his wagon.
From 1870 to 1889 our subject was farming land on shares, hired his forty acres broken, and lived within the "dug-out." His present farm house, the model of neatness, is 16x24 feet, and two stories high, with a wing 14x16 feet, one story high. His farm now comprises eighty acres, all under a high state of cultivation, enclosed within a barbed wire fence, and provided with a substantial house and outbuildings. He is fortunate in also owning a five-acre timber lot. In order to obtain this land, which now provides him such a comfortable home, he, like many another man, had to go in debt, and during the years of the grasshopper plague much self-denial and great hardships marked the experience of this man and his family.
To go back to his earlier life, it may be said in this connection that he was born in Franklin County, Ohio, December 6, 1831, and is the son of Abraham and Christina (PONTIUS) RAINER, who had two children, our subject being the youngest, the other, a sister, named Ann. The parents were also natives of the Buckeye State, and the father died before our subject was born, and his mother died when he was a lad of eleven summers, when he went to live with his grandparents on the maternal side. He remained with them until nineteen years old, when he embarked on the sea of life for himself.
Until twenty-two years of age he served as a farm hand in Ohio, and then came to Clinton County, Iowa, where he was engaged at the same work one season, when he enlisted as a member of Company C, in the 26th Iowa Infantry, and served eight months during the second year of the Civil War. His regiment was sent to Helena, Arkansas, and was at the seige of Vicksburg. After that struggle our subject was taken sick and sent to St. Louis hospital, where he remained two months and was discharged. Between the time of his leaving the service of his country and coming to Harrison County, in 1870, he worked land on shares in Clinton County, Iowa.
Concerning his married life it may be said that Melvina K. COFFMAN became his wife October 24, 1854, in Fairfield County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Noah and Rhoda COFFMAN, natives of Ohio.
Mr. and Mrs. RAINER are the parents of the following children: Lizzie G., born December 6, 1861; Frank, August 23, 1864; Anna R., July 16, 1867, now deceased; Jessie G., December 13, 1871, now deceased; Mabel, October 18, 1875.
Their son Frank was married March 1, 1888, to Winnie M., daughter of Richard J. and Mary E. MILLER, who had five children, of whom Frank's wife is the oldest.
Our subject and his wife are acceptable members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in his political views Mr. RAINER affiliates with the Republican party, first, last and all the time.

CUYAHOGA FALLS Evange line Spahr Lee, 95, a longtime resident of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away on Friday, Aug. 13, at the Otterbein Lebanon Retirement Community, where she had lived for the past nine years.
Mrs. Lee was a retired teacher from the Cuyahoga Falls Public Schools, having taught social studies, language arts, and developmental reading. She formerly worked in the Barnesville and Middletown, Ohio, school systems, for a total of 40 years in the classroom.
