INDEX

[16545]
"S. L. DOVE was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, March 3, 1854. His grandfather, Henry Dove, was a Virginian, and came to Ohio when a young man and settled in Fairfield county. Elijah Dove, father of the subject of this biography, was born and raised in Ohio, and married Mary Small, a native of the state of Pennsylvania. S. L. Dove was the youngest son of a large family of children. His mother is deceased, but his father is still living in Ohio. He was raised in Fairfield county. His home was eighteen miles south-east of Columbus, and ten from Lancaster, the county seat of Fairfield county. The neighborhood in which he lived had excellent schools, and he enjoyed good advantages for obtaining an education. For three months he was a student at the military academy at Columbus, Ohio, and also attended the Pleasantville academy. He has taught one term of school in Ohio and two in this state. He was living at home employed at farming, till 1877, when he came to this state with the intention of remaining but a short time. He had three brothers living in Shelby county, one of whom, T. F. Dove, was engaged in the practice of law at Shelbyville. In November, 1877 he took charge of a school which had been organized in a new district (No. 6), in Rural township , and taught five months. In the spring of 1878, he took charge of his brother's farm in section two, Tower Hill township. In the winter of 1879-80 he taught another term of school of four months in the same district in Rural township, in which he had for merly taught. On the 13th of June, 1880, he was married to Emma C. Sittler, a native of Shelby county, Illinois, daughter of Jacob Sittler. He is now engaged in farming in Tower Hill township. He is a sincere and earnest democrat in politics. His first vote for President was cast for Samuel J. Tilden in 1876. He is one of the active and energetic young men of Shelby county, and since his residence in the county has made many friends." Fellers, age 27/30, single, b OH, parents b OH, born in Sept., died of unknown, resided in county for 27/30. It is not known what the 27/30 means... in prior entries, if a person was one month of age, it is listed as 1/12, and if a person's age is unknown or not certain, it appears he put parenthesis around it such as (18). Perhaps it indicates "about 27-30 years old".

1930 - husband listed as widowed in 1930 census.

"Nathan Rawn was married February 11, 1866 to Laura Coffman, daughter of Samuel and Jane (Allen) Coffman. She was born January 29, 1846, in Fairfield County. The children who blessed their home are: Mary Jane, by whom she has one child, Verna M., who lives with her parents; Alice, who was born September 13, 1868, married John Bowers March t, 1888, and is the mother of four children, -- Harry, born April 6, 1889; Myrtle, born February 11, 1891; Arthur, born February 6, 1893; and Ray, born August 21, 1898 -- Nora Rawn, the third child, was born July 4, 1870, and married Henry March, September 6, 1888: they have three children, -- Charles, born in June 1889; Carl, born June 18, 1891, and Rosie, born in November 1893."

"Nathan Rawn, a soldier in the Civil War, is a man to whose enterprising and progressive disposition the State of Indiana is deeply indebted for much of her present prosperity. It was our subject who braved the displeasure and deep-seated prejudice existing among the early settlers against tiling, and he converted a tract of undesirable, low, swampy land into a farm of great productiveness, and is among the leading farmers in Pulaski County, Indiana, whose opinion is respected and followed by his less experienced neighbors.

He was born February 23, 1839, on a farm in Greenfield Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, and a son of Joseph and Mary (Fisher) Rawn. Joseph Rawn, Sr., his grandfather..."

From the Rawn message board at ancestry.com 23 Oct 2007: The Myrtle (child of Alice Rawn) that is mentioned in the biography;

"Alice, who was born September 13, 1868, married John Bowers March t, 1888, and is the mother of four children, -- Harry, born April 6, 1889; Myrtle, born February 11, 1891; Arthur, born February 6, 1893; and Ray, born August 21, 1898 -- "

should not be Myrtle. This child was actually a male child named Murl. He was born Feb 10, 1891 in Pulaski county, indiana and died in june 1970. He was married to Ocie Lowrie on October 20, 1914 in Pulaski county, and had at least one child named Sylvia.

I do not descend from murl, but just wanted to set the record straight as it is sometimes very difficult to correct a written record."

[15484] "The next house was occupied and owned by Daniel Shutlz immediately after the
Civil War. He lived here to a great age, and gained and kept more friends
than any other man of my acquaintance. He had a family of three sons and two
daughters to grow to maturity. A sweet little girl, I think they called
Hattie, passed from them when but two. I can yet see her in memory as she
would toddle about the place. Luther, the eldest son, a painter as his
father, moved to the western part of the state. Horatio went to Chicago,
where he conducted a school for the dance. Olive married George Weiser, for
half century identified with the business interests of the Village, Mary
changed her name to McLean, and moved with her husband to Magnetic Springs in
northwestern Ohio. I do not know what became of George, the third son".
