1971 - listed as the surviving father, Kenneth Alspaugh of Canal Winchester in daughter Geneva's December obit.
"Kenneth Russell Alspaugh was my father Ray's brother. Kenny is buried in Canal Winchester. Kenny's first wife, Ruth, died in 1962. They had three children - Geneva, Kenneth Eugene, and Alice Jane. I do not know where Geneva is buried but Kenneth Eugene ("Gene") is buried in Baltimore, Ohio. He had two daughters, Anne and Barbara. Barbara died in 1978 at the age of 15. She is buried in Baltimore, Ohio. Gene died around July the 4th. I am not sure which year but it is mostly likely 2000 or 2001. Kenny married Helen Tayes [sic] late in life and she is dead now, too." [June 2004 email from Carol June Alspaugh Schleich]
"My name is Rev. Mrs. Carolyn (Jean Ripley) P. Elliott of Columbus, Franklin Co., Maidson Twp., ohio. I am the middle daughter of John L. and Alice J. (Alspaugh) Ripley. My grandfather is Kenneth Russell Alspaugh. I have Kenneth R. and Ruth A. (Royal) Alspaugh's family Bible which was given to me by my mother, Mrs. Alice J. (Alspaugh) Ripley Guinther before she died.
Kenneth Russell Alspaugh was married to Ruth Ann Royal of Columbus, Oh., formerly Cleveland, Ohio, (per her sister, Mrs. Alice Kuhn who is now deceased) on November 14, 1929 in Lancaster, Ohio, by Rev. N. F. Milhim, a Lutheran minister. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wagner, the groom's brother-in-law and sister, were their witnesses (Viola E.) of Lancaster, Oh.
Grandpa and Grandma Alspaugh lived on Rt. 1, Canal Winchester, OH., now Winchester Pike bettween Ebright Rd. to the south, Shannon Rd. to the north, on the west and Bixby Rd. on the east accross from Leo Lam's farm which was on the north. Their 2-story "gentleman's farm" was on the south side of Winchester Pike. It's still there and not much has changed. Mom said that this property, while growing up, was 'self-sufficient'. Chickens, roosters, a milking cow, apple, pear, plum and cherry trees, a garden with green beans, lima beans, corn, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cabbage, etc.
Grandpa drank a lot of beer. Musta been the German in him. I know because he took me and my sister to the bars when we were little. I know Grandma drove a lot and always seemed to have the car. My family and I lived with them before.
Grandma died of Leukemia April 9, 1962, at 12:30 a.m. at University hospital. She was 57 years old. When Grandma was in the hospital, Grandpa moved to a trailer park on James Rd. just south of Port Columbus to be near and in the city. Kenneth Eugene, his son, and wife and daughter were living in that trialer park, too, as 'Gene' worked at a hanger on helicopters at Port Columbus.
Grandpa had Parkinson's disease, later, after beeing married to his 'high school sweetheart', Helen Taes. Helen was divorced from her alcoholic husband and after Helen and Grandpa married, he quit driving. They moved into the house on Winchester Pike, sold it and moved to Leslie Drive in Groveport. Grandpa's posture had been failing and Helen could not take care of him anymore so he went to a nursing home in Canal Winchester, where he died. He was buried in Union Grove Cemetery in Canal Winchester between Gender and Bowen Rds.
Barbara Jean Alspaugh, his granddaughter and daughter of Kenneth Eugene "Gene" and Helen (Bauer of Marion, Ohio) died of cancer at the age of 15 and is also buried at Union Grove Cemetery. His parents are buried their, too. 'Barbie' was her nickname.
'Uncle Gene' died from a massive heart attack wile on the riding lawnmower with one of his granddaughters on his lap. 'Uncle Gene' was always involved in aviation. He joined the Air Force July 12, 1950. His home in Baltimore, Ohio, was purchased because it had a hanger and an air strip. His son-in-law, Dave Keller, a Baltimore, Ohio, farmer and councilman, met Anne, my cousin, at hange and they wed.
Helen B. (Bauer) Alspaugh, Uncle Gene's wife, was from Marion, Ohio. She was attending Capital University in education, but married Uncle Gene who was 27 at the time and she was 21, in Marion, Ohio. Helen's father was a Nationwide Insurance Agent. Helen went back to Capital University decades later where she received her B. A. then Masters in education. She was a teacher for Pickerington. She retired and had cancer and she died a couple years ago.
Gene and Helen's children and grandchildren:
Anne Louise (Alspaugh) Keller, R. N., husband Dave Keller of Baltimore, Ohio (farmer, councilman)
Brook Alspaugh (graduated Berne Union, attending O.S.U.)
Jacquiline Alspaugh (attending Berne Union)
Barbara Jean Alspaugh (deceased)
Geneva Ann Alspaugh and Paul Nixon Morehart graduated from Canal Winchester High School and married Sept. 12, 1952 at Asbury United Methodist Church, Rt. 1, Winchester Pike, Canal Winchester, Ohio
My mother, Alice and Aunt Geneva were best friends. Aunt Geneva and Uncle Paul were in Washington DC after leaving Germany. When Uncle Paul retired, he became a pilot for American Airlines in Nashville, TN. They lived in a suburb, Davidson. our family vacationed there to visit them. They moved to a home in the T. V. A. then Uncle Paul transferred to Arlington, TX., with American Airlines. Shortly after moving there, Aunt Geneva was killed in a single car auto accident.
Aunt Geneva had health problems after the airplane she was on, flying over the Atlantic Ocean to Germany, lost an engine. She was on many prescription medications. My mother said that she was not herself that night when she got in her car and drove in the rain, if I recall correctly. Aunt Geneva is buried in Union Grove Cemetery in Canal Winchester, Ohio. She devoted her whole life to her children.
Alice Jane Alspaugh, 17, and John Laverne Ripley, 23, were married at Liberty, Indiana, May 28, 1955. Mom was under age and Gradma and Grandpa Alspaugh, Uncle Gene and 'Aunnie' Helen were their witnesses. Mom worked at F & R. Lazarus, downtown, once, but became a wife and mother. She was a housewife and stay-at-home mom.
'Vern' and Alice Jane's children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren:
Mairly Jane (Ripley, Ray) Knopic, May 7, 1956. Daughters: Kimberly Yvonne (Ray, Shoup) West November 10, 1974. Son, Layne West. Christine Jene' Ray Sept. 6, 1976
Sherilyn Kay (Ripley, Manbevers) Stark July 12, 1961. Husband: Carson Stark married August 2, 1993. Children: Emily Jayne Manbevers May 20, 1987, Matthew Carson Stark, Feb. 22, 1997.
Carolyn Phillips (Jean) Elliott (Ripley, Phillips, Fauble) Elliott, April 16, 1957. Husband: Rev. Robert L. Elliott. Son: Gregory Allen Phillips Dec. 10, 1978, father Steven C. Phillips. Sons: Christian Steven Phillips oct. 13, 1999, Caleb Allen Phillips, Sept. 17, 2002, mother Eva Peveler. Step children: Michael (Amy) Fauble and son. Ranee (Fauble) & sons. Mandi Fauble (Ralph) & children. Margo Elliott & daughters. Rusty Elliott.
Dad developed congestive heart failure but was complicated by cancer, all found in 1991. She was devoted to his car until he passed Saturday, March 7, 1992. Mom suggested we all go on vacation together and we all went to Burr Oak, a favorite place of Dad's. Being alone was hard on mom, but her life-long neighbor on Harbor Boulevard in Asbury Heights (Hempy's Grove), America Blythe Smith, took her to Fellowship Baptist Church across from Asbury United Methodist Church and met her 2nd husband, Melvin Guinther. The house was sold as mom moved into Mel's house on Byron Ave. off Barnett Rd.
Mom developed difficulties with Type I Diabetes and also was found to need a heart transplant, which she refused. She died peacfully at Mt. Carmel East, October 14, 1998, with her husband Mel and best friend, Aunnie Helen, by her side." Sent by Carolyn via email.

Were they divorced? The 1958 obituary of his wife did not mention him at all. My guess is that yes, they must have been divorced.
