KING, JOHN [Newcastle Township]
BIOGRAPHY
John King, ex-sheriff of Fulton county and a familiar figure in democratic politics, was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, Oct. 16, 1840. He grew up in the village of Lockville and secured a meager education. He selected mechanics as a livelihood and when twenty years old began learning the carpenter's trade under an older brother, Henry King. Soon after completing his term of service he came to Fulton county and became a resident of Newcastle township. He spent the succeeding twenty-five years in that township, doing largely the building and general improving on superstructure done during that period. His best residences were those of John Kesler, Sol. Wagner, Henry Haimbaugh, George Perschbaugher, Lawrence McArter, John Haimbaugh, Charles King and others to a grand total of 168 residences. He has built upward of sixty barns, five elevators and the shoe factory in Rochester. Mr. King became a citizen of Rochester late in the fall of 1892. He came as the sheriff elect and was inducted in to office Nov. 24, of that year. His majority was over 200. He demonstrated his capacity as a peace officer, and his efficiency as a public servant, but all this counted for naught so far as it affected the result at the next election. Democracy seemed to be doomed in 1894 and whoever happened to be its standard bearer went down with it. The landslide came along and Mr. King being his party's candidate for re-election went out of office just two years after he went in. The past two years Mr. King has had no business beyond supervising work on his farm and doing an occasional turn with saw and plane. Sept. 12, 1863, Mr. King was married in Fairfield county, Ohio, to Susan A., daughter of Washington Flood, born in Virginia; came to Ohio early and engaged in the confectionery business. He died about the year 1850. Mr. and Mrs. King's children are: Frances, twenty-nine, wife of George N. Clymer, of Rochester; Milo O., M.D., twenty-seven, graduated from Rush medical college, Chicago, May 28, 1896; Leander, twenty-four, a professional bookkeeper, graduated from Grand Rapids commercial college 1893; Annetta, twenty-one; Stella, eighteen; Albert, fifteen, and Emma, thirteen. Mr. King's first child, Sarah Jane, died at two years. John King is a son of Michael King, who married Susan, daughter of a Mr. Slagle, of German birth. Michael King was born in Berks county, Pa., 1808. He moved to Ohio about 1836. He was a farmer. His death occurred in this county 1868. His wife died four years later, aged sixty-three. Their family consisted of: Anna, Mary, wife of David Boyer, of Franklin county, Ind.; Sarah, wife of Conrad Haimbaugh, of Newcastle township, Fulton county; Michael, Fairfield county, Ohio; John, George, Newcastle township, and Susan, now Mrs. Amos Selby, Rochester. John King is a Mason and a K. of P. His reputation is that oif an honest, square, upright citizen. He is a useful member of society, useful to his family and useful to the public.
[Elia W. Peattie, Fulton County History, National Publishing Co,. Chicago 1896, pp. 97-98]
OBIT: Rochester Sentinel, Rochester, Indiana, Sat., Apr 2, 1904.
Ex-Sheriff John KING died at 2 o'clock this morning at the family residence in Rochester, after a protracted illness of locomotor ataxia.
Mr. King was born in Fairfield county, Ohio October 16, 1840, where he grew to young manhood when he removed to Fulton county and settled in Newcastle township. Here for twenty-five years he followed the carpenters trade and ran his farm, and in 1892 removed to Rochester to assume the duties of County Sheriff, to which office he was elected by a large majority. Mr. King was again the choice of his party for the office but went down in the landslide of 1894, Frank DILLON succeeding him.
He was married in 1863 to Susan A. FLOOD, in Ohio, who preceded her husband to the other world only last year. To this union were born Sarah F. [KING], who died in infancy; Francis A. [KING CLYMER], wife of Geo. N. CLYMER; Dr. Milo [KING], of this city; Dr. Lee [KING], of Williamsport; Albert H. [KING], a student of DePauw University; and Misses Jeanette, Estella and Emma [KING] who ministered to the comfort of their father in his last days.
John King was a man of sterling character, loved by his friends and honored and respected by his opponents. Politically he was a democrat of the old school, and while he achieved a success in this party he was by no means a politician in the common acceptance of the term. He was above subterfuge and political trickery. He was an ideal father; with but a meager education such as the early days afforded, he believed in equipping his children for life's battle by giving them the advantages of the best schools. He was a staunch, loyal friend, always open and aboveboard, and this course earned for him a wide circle of friends, who are sincerely sorry at his demise.
He was a member of the Masonic and Pythian orders, who will have charge of the funeral, which occurs at the house tomorrow at 3 p.m. Rev. O. A. HILL will conduct the services and interment will be made at the I.O.O.F. cemetery. [Oct 16, 1840 - April 1, 1904]

The children who blessed their home are: Mary Jane, by whom she has one child, Verna M., who lives with her parents; Alice, who was born September 13, 1868, married John Bowers March t, 1888, and is the mother of four children, -- Harry, born April 6, 1889; Myrtle, born February 11, 1891; Arthur, born February 6, 1893; and Ray, born August 21, 1898 -- Nora Rawn, the third child, was born July 4, 1870, and married Henry March, September 6, 1888: they have three children, -- Charles, born in June 1889; Carl, born June 18, 1891, and Rosie, born in November 1893."
"Nathan Rawn, a soldier in the Civil War, is a man to whose enterprising and progressive disposition the State of Indiana is deeply indebted for much of her present prosperity. It was our subject who braved the displeasure and deep-seated prejudice existing among the early settlers against tiling, and he converted a tract of undesirable, low, swampy land into a farm of great productiveness, and is among the leading farmers in Pulaski County, Indiana, whose opinion is respected and followed by his less experienced neighbors.
He was born February 23, 1839, on a farm in Greenfield Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, and a son of Joseph and Mary (Fisher) Rawn. Joseph Rawn, Sr., his grandfather..."
From the Rawn message board at ancestry.com 23 Oct 2007: The Myrtle (child of Alice Rawn) that is mentioned in the biography;
"Alice, who was born September 13, 1868, married John Bowers March t, 1888, and is the mother of four children, -- Harry, born April 6, 1889; Myrtle, born February 11, 1891; Arthur, born February 6, 1893; and Ray, born August 21, 1898 -- "
should not be Myrtle. This child was actually a male child named Murl. He was born Feb 10, 1891 in Pulaski county, indiana and died in june 1970. He was married to Ocie Lowrie on October 20, 1914 in Pulaski county, and had at least one child named Sylvia.
I do not descend from murl, but just wanted to set the record straight as it is sometimes very difficult to correct a written record."
