Eagle Twp. - George W. Alspach. "In the latter part of April, 1834, Mr. Alspach, to use his own language, 'landed in Hancock County, in Eagle township, at the house of John Powell.' He at once engaged to work for Mr. Powell at $13 per month. In the fall of the same year he went back to his home in Fairfield county, but soon returned, and went to work for Jacob Zoll. He says, however, 'that he took time to select a lot of land, and go to the land office to enter it, but was too late, as it had already been taken up'. After returning to the township, he selected and entered the south-west quarter of section 22. Mr. Alspach is now living on this same tract of land, which by his industry has been converted into a beautiful and valuable farm. Mr. Alspach says he was married in March, 1835, built a cabin on his land, moved into it in May, without a door or window in place. A blanket served to close the door. This cabin stood in the woods, with wolves howling them to sleep at night. His nearest neighbor was Benj. O. Whitman, who lived one mile and a half distant. The first settlers in this part of the township, as Mr. Alspach remembers them, were the Woodruffs, Whitman, John Decker, Ebright, William Tanner and Jacob Powell previous to 1834, then came Jacob Zoll, Peter Oman, Moses Elsea, Henry Keel, John Powell, Daniel and Peter Fellers and J. Alspach. Mr. Alspach said that at one time he was at a log rolling or house raising every day for three weeks. All the township offices have been filled by Mr. Alspach, including Overseer of the Poor, and Fence Viewer, and yet he never became wealthy holding office. Mr. Alspach is and always has been an honest, upright man and good citizen. [HISTORY OF HANCOCK COUNTy, Ohio - Springfield, Ohio, D. B. Beardsley, 1881, pp 250-251]

"Daniel Crouse was born in Pennsylvania in 1821 and was one of a family of twenty-seven children. His father was a native of Germany and was twice married. On account of the large family, Daniel was placed in the home of Major Boggs, of Pickaway County, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. After his marriage he settled on a farm at Oregon, a small hamlet west of Lithopolis. On May 11, 1869, Daniel Crouse married Sarah Whaley, who was born at Lithopolis, August 22, 1835. Their children were: Katie, William Whaley, Sally Irene, George Augustus, and Mattie Gayman. Three other children died in infancy. Sally Irene, now Mrs. Philip Weber, of Canal Winchester, was born Dec. 12, 1872. Mattie (Crouse) Gayman was born on a farm near Lithopolis, Ohio, Dec. 28, 1880. Ancestry.com. History of Franklin County, Ohio. Provo, UT. MyFamily.com, Inc.. 2004. History of Franklin County, Ohio. Moore, Opha,. Topeka. Historical Pub. Co.. 1930, p 1385. [10217] "The next family to have left an impression on my memory was that of my Uncle William Edwards. He was a shoemaker who answered the call of his country and served through the War, but returned wrecked in health and ambition. He was a shoemaker, and resumed his trade, but did not live long thereafter. He left a large family which alone the indomitable will of the widow might provide for. Many children had come to bless their door. Some died very young. [7604] NAME/DOB/DOD/POBurial: "Cemeteries of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH", Fairfield Co., Ohio, Chapter OGS, 1996, p 96. Died 18 Oct 1834, OR, the book has in brackets June 13, 1831 at 75y 10m 23d meaning someone reading the stone at a prior time read it as thus. However, if you add the 75y 10m 23d to his date of birth, it comes out exactly to 18 Oct 1834, which is the date I will use. Also, his estate record shows his will was written in 1832, filed in '34.

ESTATE of Frederick Huntwork, Liberty Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, case #908 mentions he had been a Revolutionary soldier and applied for a pension before his death. Will written June 17, 1832 and filed in 1834. Executors by will were Thomas Holmes and Gideon Martin. Wife was Catharine. Heirs were sons Jonathan, Johna and George and the children of son Michael, deceased, who were Catharine, Mary, George W., Michael, Elizabeth and Henry, "Fairfield County Wills and Estate Abstracts, Cases 501-1000", Fairfield
County Gen., Society, June 1997, p 44.

Oscar Wernert married an Ada Davis 22 Nov 1874 Fairfield Co., OH.

NOTE: in wife's obit, it says Oscar died in 1933. There is no stone for him in Betzer Cemetery. My assumption is that he's buried by first wife, whoever that is, as in wife Alice's 1956 obituary it mentions surviving step children. Later: According to death certificate he was born in Union Grove. Also, his second wife was the informant for the certificate, and she states that he and both of his parents were born in Pottsville, PA. Census records don't agree with those states and places of birth.

Death certificate image. Oscar A. Wernert of Canal Winchester, R. D., Violet Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio, died Jan. 3, 1932, aged 81y 14m 26d, married to Alice. Born Aug. 7, 1850 in Pottsville, PA, to Henry b Pottsville, PA and Boyer b Pottsville, PA. Informant was Mrs. Alice Wernert. Buried Union Grove, Jan. 5.
