"Across the alley to the south, lived Dr. Eels, a very quiet and reserved man, who did not mix much with the Village folk. He had some sort of position on the medical staff of the state, in connection with a state hospital which took a portion of his time. He had but one child, Fred, older than I. I believed the doctor died in his home here. Certainly he was buried here as his grave is marked by the first granite stone erected in the year. The family removed and severed all connection with the Village. "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 29.

INDEX

[137] "History of Fairfield County", p 620 Sanford FOOR, who has been a resident of Lithopolis for thirty-eight years, has many business interests in this section, including farming, threshing and lumbering, having operated his sawmill continuously since 1879. He was born in Bloom Twp, FCO 1/2 mile NE of this city, March 16, 1848 and is a son of Daniel and Mary (BRAKEBILL) FOOR. Daniel FOOR came to FC from PA when he was a young man and engaged in farming in Bloom township until within 5 yrs of his death, when he retired and moved to Winchester. He married Mary BRAKEBILL and they had 10 ch born to them, 7 of whom are living.

Sanford FOOR has the usual school advantages offered boys in his day and they were sufficient to provide a good foundation. He entered into the mill business in 1879 and handles hard wood for building material. He is interested also along other lines and is one of the busy men of this place and one of the best known. Politically, Mr. Foor is a Democrat and for 17 yrs served in the office of constable in Bloom Township. Mr. FOOR married Miss Tabitha BOWER and they have had 7 ch, Estella, who lives at home; Hattie, who died when aged 11 yrs, Loretta, who married William CASSIDY and has 2 ch--Evelyn and Byron; Curtis, a resident of Lithopolis who married Margaret CONAWAY; James Monroe, who lives at Columbus and married Jennie DOLLAR; Emerson, who assumed the duties of a justice of the peace on Jan 1, 1910; and Lee, who died in infancy. Mr. Foor and family attend the Methodist Episcopal Church."

"Two years later came the John McLain campaign for governer. My friend, Sanford Foor, was then filling the office of Democratic Central Committeeman from Bloom township. He asked me to go with him to a meeting of his committee at Lancaster. I did, being curious to know how such meetings were conducted. The meeting proceeded to elect an executive committee to conduct the coming campaign. It was decided to appoint seven members. After a number had been proposed, my friend arose and proposed my name as a member. It was so agreed", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 70.

"Sanford Foor had a black [horse] at that time, which none could beat, and was he proud of it? I say he was. I wonder if he could be happy in the 'Land Beyond the Setting Sun' without a duplicate of the black", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 75.

Speaking of who resided in which houses, the author states, "I cannot recall when it was built or whom were its earliest occupants. Sanford Foor overshadows all who went before. He was the son of Daniel Foor, of the next chapter. He was active in many pursuits. He was the thresherman for the farmers. He operated movable sawmills taking them into the timberland of the farmer. He was a general contractor, and it would be difficult to enumerate all of his business pursuits. Through them all he was a model of integrity." "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 28.

Charles Dale Gribben, 92, of Boise, ID died March 29, 2010 at his Valley View residence of natural causes. Dale was born on February 23, 1918 in Parsons, Kansas, the second of two sons to Charles and Maude Foore Gribben. His father emigrated from Belfast, Ireland as a steam fitter and worked for the Union Pacific and Katy railroads before founding Gribben Motors in Parsons, Kansas circa 1918. Dale graduated from Parsons High School in 1935. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1939. That time began his 75+ years as a raving Kansas Jayhawk sports fan for which he served as Chairman of Southeast Kansas University Alumni Association, the KU Development Committee, and a member of the KU Williams Endowment Fund. Following graduation, Dale worked for Sheffield Steel and Phillips Petroleum both in Kansas City until 1948. He met our Mom, Louise Josephine Brockelman, an airline hostess for TWA, in 1944, and they were married in the Linwood Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri on January 20, 1945. They moved to Parsons in 1948 when he joined his retiring father, our grandfather, Charles, in the auto dealer business selling Buicks and other General Motors brands. Upon returning to his hometown, Dale became very active in the business community and civic affairs serving as President of the Parsons Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club, Chair of the Parsons Industrial Development Fund. Professionally, in his nearly 30 years in the automobile business, he was President of the local new car dealers association, served on the Board of Directors of the Kansas Motor Car Dealers, and a member of the Buick and Pontiac national Motor Car Dealers Council. In retirement Dale continued his lifelong love of his daily golf game and many travels with Louise and friends. They were members of the Parsons Wesley United Methodist church. In 2006 they moved to Boise to be closer to their children. Dale is survived by his wife of 65 years, Louise; son, Gary (Virginia) of Boise; daughter, Patricia of Oakland, CA; and grandson, Matthew (fiancee', Haley Knowlton) of Santa Clara, CA. Dale was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Jack. At Dale's request there will be no public memorial service. An informal Open House will be held at the home of Gary and Ginny Gribben, 2263 Bluestem Lane, Boise. Friends are welcome to join the family in remembering and celebrating Dale's life from 4pm to 7m Friday evening, April 2nd. Memorials may made to the American Red Cross, c/o Summers Funeral Homes, 1205 W. Bannock Street, Boise, Idaho 83702. [Idaho Statesman, April 1, 2010]
