She is the daughter of Henry D. and Deborah Alspach, who were also natives of Fairfield Co., Ohio". Augustus was the s/o Frederick and Mary (Buchannan) Sinks, natives of Montgomery Co., Ohio. OBIT: DIED. --At the residence in Rochester township, Saturday, September 25, 1875, Mrs. MARY A. SINKS, wife of A. C. SINKS. aged 30 vears, 11 months and 5 days.
The deceased was born in Fairfield county, Ohio. Her maiden name was MARY A. ALSPAUCH. She came. to this county with her parents in 1854, and was married to her now bereaved husband the 25th of May, 1871. The funeral services were held last Sabbath at the Union church, in the presence of a large congregation of relatives and sympathizing friends. Rev. P. CARLAND preached an excellent discourse ... After these solemn services closed, a procession of seventv-five to one hundred wagons, well filled with the neighbors and friends of the deceased, followed the body to the Mt. Zion cemetery, where it was laid away in the cold and narrow limits of the grave to rest until the resurrection morn.
As a wife and mother she was all that could be desired - loving and caring for her husband and two children with true womanlv affection, and was loved by them as ardently in return. As a neighbor she was exemplary - always kind, benevolent and attentive, caring for the sick and sympathizing with the afflicted. She had long been a faithful attendant at the Sabbath school, always exhibiting a Christian spirit, and although she was called away in the prime of womanhood, when the harvesting time life had just begun. She is now reaping the reward of her labors in Heaven.
We tender our sympathies to the bereft husband and little children, hoping they will heed the exhortation of the apostle to be always ready, for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of Man cometh. -J. PENCE. [Fulton County Indiana Newspaper Excerpts, 1875, as posted to the Fulton County Library website, viewable 2007]

This child is out of sequence, usually indicating it's a child of a prior marriage. No prior marriage is known, however. Could it be a nephew? I've double-checked the census and it definitely shows "son" for both "Poll" and Edward, and several years later they have (another) child named Edward. Plus, if Edward WAS theirs, he was born May 1890, just 5 months after a daughter, Cora, who was born Dec. 1889 and also listed as age 10. Have tried searching for any Paul and Edward in the 1910 census that have the same last name and have not been successful.

1918 - draft registration form; Joseph Wesley Brown, 307 E. 7th, Hastings, Adams Co., NE., age 41, born July 30, 1877, physician, nearest relative is Mary Belle Brown of same address. Medium height, stout build, brown eyes, dark hair. Ancestry.com. World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2005.

1918 - Flu Epidemic: The public health issues raised by the epidemic were still a distant second in public interest. Thus, it's hardly surprising to find disagreements among local officials on how to best respond to the outbreak. The first casualty of these was the city physician, Dr. J. V. Beghtol. On Sunday morning October 6, he and Mayor Madgett had spoken by telephone regarding the possible need to close public gathering places, to fight the spread of the epidemic. The doctor had advised the mayor that Omaha and other cities in the eastern part of the state had closed theaters and other public places, and expected that Hastings would have to do the same. He deferred any final recommendation, however, until after a combined meeting of the board of health and city council scheduled for that afternoon. The mayor apparently wasn't satisfied with this; he contacted the president of the ministerial association, and issued a proclamation, announced from all the pulpits of the city that Sunday morning, that the churches and theaters were to be closed until further notice. The scheduled afternoon meeting then took place; Dr. Beghtol testified that, over the intervening hours, he and Dr. J. W. Straight, health inspector for the schools, had investigated the situation-and found only four confirmed cases of flu in the city. Given this data, the decision of the board was that schools and other public places remain open. Understandably, the mayor took offense at what he considered Dr. Beghtol's "flip-flop" on the issue. Dr. Beghtol, in response, took offense at the mayor's indulging "his penchant for issuing proclamations and edicts," and resigned. Dr. J. W. Brown was appointed in his place. The epidemic was barely underway, and local nerves were already fraying. Two days later, 35 cases of flu were recorded in Hastings.

Thursday October 10, the decision was reversed. Mayor Madgett, this time acting as chairman of the board of health, issued an order "closing theaters, churches, schools, pool rooms and card rooms as a precautionary measure against influenza." Military pickets were posted around the perimeter of the Hastings College campus, to prevent resident students from leaving. But students living at home in Hastings were still allowed to come and go-"if there is no sickness of any kind in the home." Obviously, irrational compromises in policy were still the order of the day. Irrational "home remedies" were, as well, ranging from garlic amulets to baking powder in water, as recorded in the Tribune. There were 81 recorded cases in Hastings by October 14; 198 cases four days later. Drs. Brown and J. H. Hahn were themselves reported ill with influenza. The obituary columns of the Tribune were littered with flu victims. And, mirroring the epidemic worldwide, these were primarily previously-healthy people in their twenties and thirties. Flu has always disproportionally killed the very young and the very old; the 1918 epidemic killed a hefty share of people in the prime of life. Secondary bacterial pneumonia, particularly with the germ that came to be known as Hemophilus influenzae, a common pathogen in younger people, probably played a major role. But as previously noted, the flu virus itself was particularly aggressive that year. On October 21, the Nebraska State Board of Health placed a ban on all public gatherings, indoors and outdoors.

There were no flu deaths in the first three weeks of February 1919, and the general assumption was that the epidemic was over. The last week in February, Dr. Brown filed what he no doubt assumed would be a summary report on the epidemic with the State Health Department-1,185 total reported cases of flu in the city of Hastings in 1918, with only 28 new cases in the six weeks since January 15. Alas, this assumption was wrong. The first week in March, there was a major recurrence of the flu in rural Adams County. 65 of 82 students in the Holstein school were absent with flu. On March 6, Dr. Mace of Roseland applied to the county clerk for 25 influenza quarantine cards. Wanda Township was the focus of another major outbreak. After going for about three weeks without admitting a case of influenza, 10 of 18 admissions to Mary Lanning the week of March 10-16 were flu cases. By the end of March, Hastings alone had suffered over 100 deaths from influenza and related complications.

The following is from John C. Hamler of Columbus, Ohio; 2005:

Franklin W Courtright enlisted in Company C, 11th Ohio Cavalry on 5 December 1861. At the time this was Co C, 6th Ohio Cavalry, but the unit was re-designated in September 1862 as Co C, 1st Independent Battalion Ohio Cavalry and again in October 1863 as 11th Ohio Cavalry. Company C was recruited in FAIRFIELD COUNTY, OHIO.
The 11th Ohio cavalry was deployed along the Overland Trail in Wyoming from 1862-1866. In February 1863, Company C was part of a relief column that marched from Fort Laramie to Fort Halleck (*), which was under threat of Indian attack. During the march, the troops encountered a severe blizzard thru which they continued to travel. Upon arriving at Fort Halleck (*), there were many cases of frostbite and three men either died outright, or did not recover from the extreme cold. Franklin W Courtright was recorded as frozen to death on 28 February 1863 at Fort Halleck (*). The soldiers buried at Fort Halleck (*), were supposed to have been re-buried at Fort McPherson. (++). If so, he is one of the unknowns buried there.

Kim Jeffery Torgler
Headquarters, 11th Ohio Cavalry
hq1thovc@zoominternet.net

(*) Fort Halleck, Wyoming, was established in 1862 to protect the Overland Trail Stage Line from continuing Indian problems. The site chosen in a gap on the north side of Elk Mountain at an elevation of about 7300 feet was near a spring with plenty of wood for cooking and heating....
The post surgeon at the time, Dr. J. H. Finfrock, kept very detailed records of the emigrants passing through Fort Halleck station. In 1864 he recorded that there were over 4200 emigrant wagons, with a staggering number of 17,584 emigrants and an even more astounding total of over 50,000 animals traveling the Overland Trail.....
A diarist, Franklin E Adams, who kept quite a thorough diary of his trip on the Overland Trail in 1865, notes that soldiers from the Ohio Volunteers were stationed at Fort Halleck, and were paid $16.00 per month to fight the Indians. This stretch of the trail, from Fort Halleck to Sulphur Springs in the west, was considered to be one of the most dangerous, with regards to Indian attacks......
Fort Halleck was abandoned in 1866, just four years after being established; and by the next year diarists described it as "the most dreary place on the entire route". One building remains in the area that some feel may possibly be the blacksmith shop. A stone marker erected by the DAR in 1914 marks the site of Fort Halleck Cemetery.

(++) Fort McPherson National Cemetery is located in Lincoln County, Nebraska, about four miles south of Maxwell. Fort McPherson was built in 1863 with the purpose of ensuring peace along the western frontier between the thousands of emigrants traveling along the Oregon Trail and the Native American inhabitants......twenty-three cemeteries from abandoned frontier forts located in Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Nebraska, have been moved to Fort McPherson for proper care and maintenance of those graves. These moves took place between 1881 and 1947. Many of these graves account for the 584 unknowns that are interred here.....

The Metamora Record

Thursday, August 27, 1925

Samuel H. Foor Buried Tuesday

Samuel H. Foor was born in Bedford County, PA, May 7, 1848 and moved from there to Ohio in 1863. In 1864 he answered Lincoln's call for volunteers and enlisted in the 25th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in which he served until the close of the war. During his service he saw many of the strenuous campaigns of the war and took part on much action. He was honorable discharged at the close of the war and returned to this community where he married Sarah M. Bunting in 1867. To this union was born six children four girls and two boys. Three girls and one boy have preceded their father to the great beyond and he is survived by his daughter Mrs. Meta Buck of Metamora and his son Albert Foor of Sylvania, Ohio. He was a member of a family of five children, one brother and two sisters passed beyond and is survived by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Mercer of Metamora and a brother, Richard Foor of Stoney Ridge, Ohio. Beside these he leaves to mourn him sixteen grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He died at his home near Metamora August 21, 1926 aged 77 years, 3 months and 14 days. He was a well known and much respected citizen of this community and will be mourned by a host of friends. His well known figure will be missed from the ranks of the veterans of the G.A.R. on Memorial day, during which services he has always served as color bearer. In 1914 he became a member of the congregational church and has earnestly and steadily followed its teachings. A steady, respectable honest citizen has gone from us, one of the salt of the earth, one of whom we can scarcely spare but whose life we can well exemplify.

[8929] "Across the street from the Elkhorn, however, stands a house whose occupants are well remembered since they were very active in the Village life. When I first remember it, it was the residence of Jacob Lehman. He was a shoemaker, who came to the Village from Middletown, or Oregon, when the hope of that site growing was given up. He was a public spirited man, as were his boys. Can I recall all their names? There were Andrew, George W., Elisha, Perry and Solomon. There were three daughters. These men were so active in the affairs of the Village that they deserve a chapter for themselves. But we must be content with brief sketches. Andrew was a farmer, and did not live in the Village at any time. George W., of course named in honor of the father of our country, was a blacksmith, and intensely interested in political affairs. About his forge gathered many of those likewise interested.... Perry Lehman was the hardware merchant for his lifetime. He was first a partner of Reuben Blackwood, and then of George Wiser. This firm was as widely known as the Village itself. Elisha and Solomon did not spend all their years in the home village, but were there so frequently as to be considered a part.", "THE VILLAGE. POBurial: Name listed as Elijah Spurgeon, father Samuel Spurgeon, 03/10/1774 - 09/04/1858. "The Fleshman Files" website, accessed 2007, Green Lawn Cemetery Records, Columbus, Ohio.

From a letter written April 26, 1887 - "Dear Sir, I thought I would sit down and address you a letter telling you that there are a family of Spurgeons in this part of God's earth, and they are some of them, or were (as they have gone to their reward), ministers. My grandfather, Elijah Spurgeon, was a Methodist minister, and his brother, Jesse Spurgeon, was a Methodist minister. Our branch of the Spurgeon family are all Methodists, except one of my brothers, William Spurgeon, who was a Baptist. I believe that is your Church. In looking over my father's diary I find this item: 'My great grandfather James Spurgeon came from England about the years 1704 to 1710 and was from near London'. My father had three brothers, Jesse Spurgeon, Nimrod, and Asa. My father's name was Moses R. Spurgeon. There were eight of us in my father's house; three died in infancy, two in manhood's prime, and four are left -- my brother, James Spurgeon; my sister, Mrs. Anne Lawson; brother, Rufus Spurgeon; and myself, Eliza Spurgeon Hoys." Letter written to Rev. C. H. Spurgeon. Original data: Higgs, W. Miller. The Spurgeon family : being an account of the descent and family of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, with notes on the family in general, particularly the Essex branch, from 1465 (5 Edward IV.) to 1905 (4 Edward VIII.).
