"Mrs. Leah Fellers Passes Away in Her 80th Year; Mrs. Leah Fellers, mother of Mrs. G. L. Hummell, and Mrs. J. E. Kieffer, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. L. Hummell, Wednesday at 12:45 a.m. Mother Fellers was in her eightieth year and had been a resident of this county for the past twenty years. Her funeral will take place from the residence of G. L. Hummell in Eagle township at 1 o'clock this afternoon after which the remains will be brought to the home of J. E. Kieffer, 226 E. Lincoln street, until 8 o'clock when they will be taken to Canal Winchester, Ohio, and interred in the Lithopolis cemetery beside the husband of the deceased who preceded her fifty-one years ago. She leaves two daughters and several grand children and many warm friends to mourn her loss. Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Hummell and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Kieffer accompany the remains to Lithopolis." [obit posted by Greg Kieffer at rootsweb.com Dec. 2006]

"Leah Betzer, daughter of Peter and Barbara Ray Betzer, was born in Ross county, O., Feb. 19, 1818, and died in Eagle township Hancock county, O., Wednesday, September 29, 1897, of peritonitis, aged 79 years, 7 months 10 days. When nine years of age she came with her parents to Fairfield county, and located on a farm near Betzer church, the farm now being the home of a sister, Mrs. Jesse Brandt. She united with the Betzer Reformed church when 15 years of age, and during her whole life kept her membership there. She had one brother and seven sisters. Her brother, John Betzer, died in Linn county, Iowa, where his widow, whose maiden name was Caroline Chaney, now resides. A sister, Mrs. Daniel Crumley, died at Lithopolis, another, Mrs. Andrew Pontius, died near Kingston, Mrs. Henry Holverstott died at Marion, Mrs. Sarah Williams died near Winshester and Mahala died at home at the age of eight years. Mrs. Elijah Alspach, of this place, and Mrs. Jesse Brandt, near Betzer, are now the only surviving members of the family of eight children. On December 31, 1837, she was married to Bernhard C. Fellers. To them were born two sons and two daughters. Her husband died August 3, 1846, at Lithopolis, in the house now occupied by Felix Taes. Her youngest son, Peter Wesley, died April 8, 1867, and the other son, John Ray, died Sept. 23, 1880. About 20 years ago she removed to Findlay and has since made her home with her children. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. L. Hummell, near Findlay, at 12:45 a.m. Sept. 29. Funeral services were held at the home, by Rev. L. M. Boyer, of the Evangelical church, at 1 p.m. Oct. 1st. after which the body was taken to the home of her daugher, Mrs. J. E. Kieffer, where a short service was held at 8 p.m., after which the funeral party took the Lake Erie and Western 8:30 p.m. train, to Fostoria, and there took the C.H.V. & T. train at 1:34 a.m., arriving at this place at 8:17 a.m., Oct. 2. The funeral was preached in the Reformed church in Winchester, by her pastor, Rev. J. Heffley, who delivered the funeral sermons of her husband and two sons. There are six grandchildren, Clifford and Edwin, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Hummell, Edgar P. Fellers, of Fremont, son of John Ray Fellers, and Charles W. Kieffer, of Findlay, who were pall bearers, and Miss Lillie Hummell, of Findlay and Mrs. Alice Coffman, of Greencastle. The great grandchildren are J. Allen and Bernice E. Kieffer and Chalmer, Glen and [Ray] Coffman. The body was placed in the receiving vault of Lithopolis cemetery Saturday noon, and burial in the cemetery took place Monday afternoon, October 4. Mrs. Fellers was anxious to 'go home,' and prayed to be taken from earth. She always entertained a dread of inclement weather on funeral occasions, and often wondered how it would be when she died. The weather has been bright from her death until after her burial. Her life, after the death of her husband, was devoted to her children, and true to his memory remained a widow over a half century. The text used by Rev. Heffley was a part of the fifth paragraph of the eighth chaapter of Solomon's Song-'Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved?' The remains were accompanied here from Findlay by Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Kieffer, and Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Hummell, the ladies being the daughters and only surviving children of the deceased.

Henry CREIGHTON

Father: Hugh CREIGHTON
Mother: Nancy HUNTER

Family 1 : Sarah Francis "Fannie"

 _Hugh CREIGHTON _

INDEX

[5725] NAME/DOB/DOD/POBurial/PARENTAGE: "Cemeteries of Bloom Township, Fairfield County, OH", Fairfield Co., Ohio, Chapter OGS, 1996, p 192.

"Henry Creighton was a graduate physician, but instead of practicing his profession, he chose to farm his lands. Unlike his brothers, he did not practice his religion, if, indeed, he gave the matter a thought. He was peculiar in his ways. Would come to the Village with what was then known as a breakfast shawl, wrapped about his head in sweltering summer weather. He liked to employ the boys of the Village to help him with his work on the farm. Sometimes he had several at once. They liked to work for him, but were not so fond of his cooking. Then the farmer fed his help at his own table. Henry Creighton was a bachelor then, and was perhaps not a very good cook. Well, it came at last that Henry tired of bachelorhood. Probably he had no society connections that would have helped him gain a helpmeet, so he resorted to an advertisement in the Columbus papers. Soon there came to his home a young woman with a small boy, saying she had come in answer to his advertisement. He took her in as a housekeeper, thinking perhaps that he would prefer to know more about her before taking her to wife. But the home she gave as hers was far away in Virginia, so nothing definite was ever learned. Doubtless, the woman showed Henry her pleasant side, for I personally know she could be pleasant as well as very disagreeable. Soon they were married. They began to quarrel, to wrangle and even to fight.

It was probably in a fight that this woman killed the old man. This was about the year 1872. It happened that I was partly on the way to the Creighton place when the news came to the Village. There was a heavy snow on the ground at that time. Villagers were passing on their sledges on one of which I jumped and went along. The body had not been moved. It lay crowded into the corner of the first steps of a winding stair, the feet on the floor. According to the woman's story, which was accepted by the trial court, she, fleeing from her husband ran up the stairs. Seeing that he would follow her, she picked up a heavy iron mortar, such as old-time physicians used to mix the ingredients of their medicines, and hurled it down upon him. It caught him on the top of the head and knocked him senseless. Seeing she was in no more danger, she secured a heavy iron nailpuller, used in wrecking buildings, crept down past him to the kitchen and drove the iron prongs into his skull time and again.

It was a perfect job. On trial she was convicted and sentenced to the Ohio Penitentiary for three years. Her son was sent to the Fairfield County Children's Home.

The farm lay idle for a time. Then Joseph Creighton took out letters of administration and applied for authority to sell a tract of ten acres under necessity of paying debts. This ten acres was sold to Charles Feistkorn. This administration was continued for the period the widow remained incarcerated. Then she returned to the farm, secured release of her son from the Home, and began a solitary life, for the neighbors were very much afraid of her. Her nearest neighbor was Samuel Creighton, who soon thereafter bought a house in the Village, and moved of her nearness, placing David Baker over his nursery." The story goes on to say that the widow spent money wherever she could get credit. She brought suit to recover the ten acres sold. It ended up she was stripped of everything what what the law exempted, but still she and the boy remained there on that farm. Once someone at night shot into the farm home while the widow and her son were seated quietly at their table, and "planted a load of slugs in her neck". The author was then the Justice of the Peace and went with Dr. Courtright to the home. That particular shooting had been in the fall. Then, "the winter had slowly passed away and the leaves had come out upon the trees. The space between the farm house of Fannie Creighton and that of the land of Samuel, now occupied by the family of David Baker, perhaps five acres, was an apple orchard of full grown trees, now in full bloom... Fannie was in the orchard making soap. She had her kettle swung on a pole between two of the apple trees. The making of the soap was nearing completion". She would make trips back and forth to the home and one of the times was show in the back of her head with buckshot and fell unconscious to the ground. The Baker's heard and came to investigate. "They helped the unconscious woman into the house, revived her, called the Dr. [Courtright]... and notified the neighbors. ... "The shot had been fired from the shelter of one of the apple trees which supported the kettle. Here the murderer must have hidden during one of the trips of the soap maker ot the house. The grass and weeds had been trampled slightly... From there traces of flight could be seen by foot steps, leading toward the Joseph Creighton homestead. The corner where the three farms joined was in forest, and there the steps could not be followed, because of the fallen leaves." "There was much discussion of the matter among the citizens. Some laid the fault to the Creightons. But it seemed incredible that men of their character could have committed the crime. There was not much known except the trend of the footsteps to confirm such a suspicion. Tis true Rev. Charles Creighton had visited his father this very day, but, on the other hand, he had been in the Village on his way to take the train for home, at very near, perhaps, the exact time of the attempted murder. Anyway, no murder had been committed.

"The Township Trustees had again employed assistance for the wounded woman, and it was not thought she would die. But the help was not capable, or it was negligent, for in about two weeks the woman died. She died very horribly for maggots had gotten into the wound." Both Rev. Creighton's were thought to be suspects, but "all evidence seemed to be obscured by the general feeling that Ministers of the Gospel, whom they had frequently heard urging them to forsake their sins, could not have guilty knowledge of this crime." Many detectives, of "good repute and evil repute", came to Lithopolis to investigate and find the murderer since a reward of 500 was offered. "Rev. Joseph Creighton continued as Minister without charge, to preach the gospel, and Rev. Charles Creighton surely had the blessing of God on his work, for everywhere converts flocked to the altar at his exhorting", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 41-43.

My Dear Old Comrade

I was pleasantly surprised this morning at receiving your welcom favor of the 2nd instant (it had been missent) I was truly glad to hear from you indeed as I am to hear from any of the Old boys of 61 & 65. I was at the Regimental reunion at Kokomo one day this fall and a pleasant day it was to me, to meet and grasp the hands of my old Comrades I met one I had not seen since 1863--towit--Daniel Gatton he lives at Delong, Fulton, Co. Ind. I was at Peru this morng I seen W. H Coucher on train he lives in Peru. I gave him one of your cards. A. B. Vore ownes a farm one Mile East of Macy in this County 18 Miles North of Peru. W. H Busey, Rufe Landrum and myself reside here in Bunker Hill they are bouth married and have families--I am a widower Nellie my wife died August 23 1881. Our only child now living is my oldest Daughter Ada. She is married to W. B. Davis and live with me, or me with them in our old homestead. I have one grand child only, she will be 7 years old the 12th of this month, she is a daisey, and of course Grand pa's pet. My health is very poor indeed and has been since the battle of Stone River. I am not able to do physical labor on account of my infermities contracted in the service of my country--besides my eye sight is terribly impaired. I contracted granulated sore Eyes while in the Invilid Corps at Detroit Mich in fall of 1863 was blind a while and my sight has been bad ever since. for 7 months last year and forepart of this year I could not see to read or write. My application has been pending for pension on a new disability my eyes for nearly two years but I have not got it yet. I am drawing a small pension for Diorhoea & resulting piles of $10. a month however. but enough of this as I find my eyes are about to fail me. I will say I have an indistinct recollection of your case and I will study carefully over it and if the blanks reach me I will do the best I can for you--it is such a long while to remember accurately--I will copy certain portions of your letter and send to Comrade Vore so that he can brighten up his memory in your case. Dr Gray still lives in Noblesville, Ind. drinks as hard as ever they say. Well Uriah I am like the ballan of the boys not blessed with a surplus of this worlds goods but by rigid econimy I can pull through I guess until the final role call and be laid away descently. Yes I was the Ordely Sergt of the Company and have a Roster of all the boys in from first to last wit[h] the last known addresses of a few of them I am pleased to learn that the World is useing you as well at it is. The reports of yesterdays Election is not favorable to us Republicans verry. I guess us Republicans only put on our warpaint once in 4 years and then we make things lively. Well I will close by wishing you and your's long Life, prosperity and hapiness.

DOD: Robt. C. Foor, Sgt. Co. E., 2nd Regt VRC? Cemetery: Springdale at Bunker Hill, IN. Grave: also Pvt [Co.] A, 39th Ind Inf. Died March 24, 1903. Headstone supplied by Vermont Marble Company. Contract dated Aug. 25, 1902. Ancestry.com. Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, 1879-1903 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2007. Original data: Card Records of Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, ca. 1879-ca. 1903.

NOTE: The handwritten 'order' for the above tombstone definitely looks as if the stone was requisitioned before he died, which obviously can't be correct. The date of death is handwritten and definitely appears to be "Mch 24 - 1903", and the company name and date of contract for the stone is either typed or hand stamped and is very legible and says Aug. 25, 1902.

Two photos of small tombstone for R. C. Foor at the Miami Co., IN GenWeb website. No dates. Lot S81.

NOTE: The name "Hasthar" looks as if it was crossed out after written, OR, the single line was placed there FIRST indicating that the surname preceding it on previous columns would be the same, in this case, "Hartman". Then where it specifies the relationship of the individual, it looks as if both "Daughter" and "brother" were once written there -- it's hard to tell which one was the last. The sex is 'female', but then the occupation is dairy laborer making me believe it's more likely to be a male.
