The following sent via May 2007 email by Susan E. (Heppner) Crane:
Eugene Exline Battle
Born: Feb. 8, 1924 Toledo, Ohio
Died: July 2003
Married to Ethel - No children.
Eugene went into the service being recruited from Lakeview High School at a young age. David and Mabel had to sign for him because he was underage. He met Ethel and married. They had no children. Last known address was Boston, MA. My mom did tell me that Eugene did come home to visit family after the service once and Ethel joined him for the visit. I think they lived with them for a couple of months before moving on. Ethel became very sick with the Chicken Pox while they stayed with them and almost died, but she made it through. Mabel's Dr, Dr. Rose, made housecalls then and came to take care of Ethel. I believe this was the last time Mabel saw Eugene. She may have called him via phone or wrote at times, but I don't believe they ever saw each other again. He did not come in for the wake/funeral of Mabel. He is the only uncle and aunt on my mom's side that I had never met. My mom did not know him well either. It was a shame to us not to have met. I have seen pictures of him and Ethel when he was in service and have felt we missed an opportunity to get to know them. They too missed the opportunity to know his sisters and brother and the many nieces and nephews (family life) that they left behind. To our knowledge Ethel may be still alive in Boston, MA but not certain.
