PARENTAGE NOT DOCUMENTED. Info came from submitted gedcom to ancestry.com that shows Matilda and Missouri are children of Horatio Evans. However, the person also shows that Matilda married in 1848 Levi Bartley in Clark Co., OH. I viewed the Clark Co. marriage index and it shows that both Levi and Matilda were "colored". It also lists them as "Mulatto" on the 1850 Clark Co., Ohio census, so obviously that gedcom is not correct.

LOCATION 1959 - Dennis Foor is listed as being of RR 3, Rochester, Indiana, in brother Ferman Foor's Dec. 1959 obituary.

OBIT: Dennis H. Foor

Dennis H. FOOR, 76, of 200 Pontiac St., died at 9:50 p.m. Monday in Woodlawn Hospital. He had been a patient five weeks, and in failing health six months.

He was born Sept. 28, 1909 in Richland Township to Parlee and Essie Mae SCHOOLCRAFT FOOR and had resided all his life in that community. He was married May 21, 1949 at Richland Center to Mary M. BARKER, who survives. A retired farmer, he had been a school bus driver for 25 years. He attended the Jordan Baptist Church.

Surviving with the wife are two sons, Dennis "Mike" FOOR, Rochester; five grandchildren, Stephen, Leighann and Erik FOOR, all of Carmel, and Amanda and Vanessa FOOR, both of Rochester; and nieces and nephews. The parents and four brothers, Osa, Ferman, Jesse and Jim [FOOR], preceded in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rocheter with the Rev. Arlie MITCHUM officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. until time of services Thursday.

NOTE: Obit shows he was survived by two sons, yet only one is named in this extraction. An Edward and Pam Foor that I had previously in the database have children with the names Amanda and Vanessa, so I'm going to assume that Edward was the unnamed son. "Fulton County Indiana Obituaries 1986, The Rochester Sentinel, Tombaugh, 2003.

"Dennis Foor lived in the same house but went to four different schools when a boy in Richland Township. His home was on the Foor family farm located on 50W a half mile north of 450N. His parents were Parlee and Essie Foor. He had four older brothers: Osa, Ferman, Jesse, and Jim. Dennis first went to Sand Hill School 1916-17 for his first grade. Then he was transferred to Tiosa 1917-23, riding in buses driven by Roy Halterman, then George Holloway and son Harry (George had the contract but Harry did most of the driving), Frank Ball and his son Delmar.
When the new Whippoorwill School was built in 1923, kids near the border between the schools were transferred there. Dennis lived five miles from Tiosa but only 3 miles by road from Whippoorwill (only 1-1/2 miles across fields). Dennis rode the school bus driven by Chancey Hiatt to Whippoorwill for his 8th grade, and then entered Richland Center High School in the fall of 1924. Dennis had to provide his own transportation to school for his freshman and sophomore years, so he drove the family horse, Billy, and the buggy.
Richland Center School had two buggy sheds, one the regular barn which had a wide drive where students could park the buggies and drive the horses in beside them; the other a lean-to built onto it. The lean-to was a less desirable place to park because it held buggies only and you had to put it in by hand or unhitch and drive the horse around to the barn. There was room for only four buggies in the barn, so there was a daily race to see who would get there among the first four and get to park in the barn. Dennis was always among the first four not only so he could park in the buggy barn but also so he could play basketball for half an hour before school started.
Racing to school sometimes caused problems, such as the time Harry Overmyer was racing with a two-wheel cart and almost hit Howard Weir who was walking along the road. Osa and Ferman Foor had a horse that would balk if it was not the first to go out of the barn, so Osa would push Marie Trible back so Ferman could hitch up and get old Dick out of the barn first." {Whippoorwill School, by Shirley Willard, published in the Fulton Co. Historical Society Quarterly, #50, pp 61-79].

"Capt. Henry L. Hart, who won military honors during the Civil War as an officer of an Illinois regiment, is a prominent citizen of Shelbyville, Shelby County, where he has for some time conducted business as a furniture dealer, and he has also been a conspicious figure in the municipal government. He was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, Oct. 20, 1837, a son of Barnhart Hart, who was born in Pennsylvania in February, 1812. The grandparents of our subject removed from PA to the Buckeye State during the first quarter of the century, and were among the early pioneers of Fairfield County, where they both died soon after they located in its primeval wilds. Their son Barnhart was very small when he was orphaned, and he early had to work for a livelihood. At the age of fourteen he was bound as an apprentice to Mr. Beck, a blacksmith of Lancaster, and served with him seven years to learn the trade, receiving his board and clothes in repayment for his assistance. At the expiration of that time he did journey work for awhile, and then opened a smithy in the village of Jefferson and carried on business in his line in that place in 1851. In that year he bought a farm in Violet township and has since devoted his time to farming, being one of the prosperous, well-to-do farmers of the neighborhood. In early manhood he took unto himself a wife, whose name prior to their marriage was Mary Wooster, and she was born in Germany in 1812. The following are the names of the eight children that this worthy couple reared to maturity: Francis C., Henry L., Anna M., Charles, John, Elizabeth, Susan A., and Irving M. John, who was a member of Co. K, 114th Ohio Infantry died opposite Vicksburg while bravely fighting for his country. Ancestry.com. Obituary / Additional Information: Susannah HUFFINES was born in Pickaway Co., Walnut township, Ohio January 8, 1832, and departed this life, March 5, 1916, aged 84 years, 1 month, 27 days. Mrs. BRIDGER made her home with her daughter, Mrs. W.J. HOY, for the past eighteen years, at whose home her death occured. She was the daughter of Samuel and Jane HUFFINES. "Grandma BRIDGER" as she was called, was baptized in infancy and was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran church in Madison township Pickaway Co., Ohio, April 25, 1847, during the pastorate of Joseph A. ROOF. She was united in marriage to Peter BRIDGER, at Circleville, Ohio October 14,1858 by Rev. Joel SWARTZ. To this union were born seven children, three of whom are still living, George and Charles BRIDGER, of Iowa, and Anna HOY of near Royalton. Elizabeth, Eliza, William, and an infant son, preceeded her to the spirit world. Her husband also preceeded her in death. Grandma BRIDGER was a kind and patient sufferer, having been very feeble the past three years. She leaves to mourn their loss, three brothers and one sister, George HUFFINES, of Ashville, Ohio, John Henry Huffines, of Kansas, Doan HUFFINES, and Margaret C. MULLEN, of Iowa, one daughter and two sons, twelve grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. We shall meet, but we shall miss her, There shall be one vacant chair; We shall linger to caress her, When we breath our evening prayer. When a month ago we gathered, Joy was in her mild blue eyes; But a golden cord is severed, And our Grandma's in the skies At our fireside, sad and lonely, Oft will the bosom swell At rememberance of the conflict, How our darling grandma died How she strove to bear her suffering, Thro' the darkest of the night, And in Sunday's morning light. Passed to be with friends beyond. Funeral services were conducted at the Royalton M.E. church, Tuesday March 7, 1916 by the Rev. M.V.B. Stumo Interment Reber Hill

[24245]

18 Oct 1897 - 22 Jul 1977

Family 1 : Osee Ward FOOR

INDEX

[24245] "Mother of 14 buried Monday - Whiting - Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Keen, [98?], mother of 13 sons and one daughter, who died yesterday at the Keen residence, will be held Monday... Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Osie Foor of this city...", [Hammond Times, Hammond, IN, Aug. 29, 1937]

1938 - Family Split is Revealed in Land Suit. An unusual case is on trial in Porter circuit court before Judge Charles W. Jenson and a jury. Stanley keen, of Vaparaiso, an emple [sic] of the Continental Diamond Fibre company, and his ten brothers are plaintiffs, and his sister, Mrs. Rose Foor and husband, Ocie Foor, of Whiting, are defendants. The suit, which was begun Monday, and is expected to last the balance of the week, involves quieting of title to the plaintiff's share in a 180-acre farm in Jackson township, Porter county, owned by Mrs. Mary Keen, mother of the parties. Mrs. Keen died in August 1927. The plaintiffs are contesting a deed which Mrs. Mary keen, their mother, executed to Mrs. Foor in July 1936, on the theory that Mrs. Keen was of unsound mind at the time and the daughter exercised undue influence over her. Loring and Douglas, of this city, are representing the plaintiffs, and Frank Galvin, of Hammond, is counsel for the Foors. [Vidette Messenger, Valparaiso, IN., Nov. 2, 1938]

1938 - Parties Reach Settlement in property case. After a witness for the defense has completed his testimony Thursday afternoon in the case of Stanley Keen and others against Rose M. and Ocie Foor of Whiting, commended in Porter circuit court before Judge Charles W. Jensen and a jury, a settlement was reached between the parties. The case was brought by Stanley Keen and his ten brothers to set aside a deed given to their mother, Mrs. Mary Keen, to her daughter, Rose, to 180 acres of land in Jackson township, Porter county, a year before she died in August 1937. Bernard Keen, a brother of Mrs. Foor, and who was not a party to the suit, was the witness at yesterday's hearing who caused a settlement of the case. In his testimony he admitted testifying falsely in LaPorte superior court at Michigan City recently to a matter which he testified to at the present trial. Attorny Francis Galvin, of Hammond, who represented the Foors, then entered into negotiations with the plaintiff's counsel and an agreement was reached. Loring and Douglas, of this city, were attorneys for the plaintiffs. [Vidette-Messenger, Valparaiso, IN., Nov. 4, 1938]

"Rose is the woman my father married after him and my mother were divorced. I have a copy of her death certificate which shows her father's name was "unknown Keen" and her mother Mary (no maiden name listed). She was born October 18, 1897 and died July 22, 1977." Madaline Guillaum, April 2009 email.

POB/DOM/POM: From Madaline Guillaum via January 2011 email. (She lists her as "Rose Keene Witkowski").
