OBIT: Special to The New York Times - Peekskill, NY, July 2 - Martha Boswell, who with her two sisters, Connee and Vet, achieved an international reputation as the Boswell Sisters singing trio, died today at the Peekskill Hospital after a long illness. Her age was 49. She had lived near here in Putnam County. Miss Boswell's early years were spent in a household that lived in the world of music. As children, the three sisters were taught to play the cello, violin, and piano, but it was singing that governed their young lives. By the time the Boswell sisters had reached their middle teans, their harmonic warblings were known throughout the Delta country around New Orleans. Martha, Helvetia (familiarly known as Vet) and Connee laid the foundation for future fame by pooling their talents in individual vocal arrangements. It was Connee, despite paralysis suffered from an accidental fall from a coaster wagon at the age of 4, and who suffered years later a second fall that incapacitied her, who led the trio. Inseparable, the sisters had achieved by 1935 international fame with their style on radio, in night clubs and the theatre and on tours of Europe. They were among the first to introduce swing. Their recording of "Stardust" among many other records, was one of their most popular. They appeared with many leaders of popular orchestras -- Benny Goodman, the Dorsey Brothers, Paul Whiteman -- on every major network before 1935, when Vet was married and left the trio. At the same time, Martha Boswell likewise gave up her career for matrimony. The soloist of the trio and the arranger of the Boswell harmonies continued on alone as Connee Boswell. Surviving, besides the sisters, is a son, Jules B. Lloyd. Miss Boswell's husband, George L. Lloyd, died several years ago. A retired major in the Royal Air Force, he was a founder of Decca Records, Inc., and had been an insurance executive in Peekskill.

1958 - Martha Boswell Lloyd, on July 2, 1958, at Peekskill, NY, eldest of the Boswell sisters. Funeral services at the Church of the Assumption on Saturday, July 5, at 10 a.m. In repose at the E. O. Curry Funeral Home, Peekskill, NY. Survived by one son, Jules Lloyd of NYC; two sisters, Connee Boswell of NYC and Mrs. John Paul Vet Jones of Peekskill, NY. [New York Times, July 4, 1958]

INDEX

[T126280] Crescent News, Defiance, Ohio, Feb. 17, 2008
His sunny smile and his energy level that is typical for any 3-year-old in no way indicate that Caden Foor has had two major heart surgeries in his young life.

Born on Dec. 31, 2004, Caden, the son of Defiance residents Jenna Foor and Nick Burroughs, was only 2 weeks old when he had his first surgery to repair a congenital heart defect.

To raise awareness of congenital heart problems, the American Heart Association observed the week of Feb. 7-14 as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.

"Caden is my miracle baby," Foor said with a smile. "He had his first surgery on Jan. 14, 2005, just two weeks after he was born," she said.

"His condition is very rare," she explained. "It is only 1 percent of all heart defects. His heart is backwards. He had a congenital transposition of the great arteries. The pulmonary and aortic arteries come off opposite sides of his heart. His left and right ventricles are also inverted."

During Caden's first surgery at the University of Michigan CS Mott Children's Hospital, Ann Arbor, a band was placed on his pulmonary artery to restrict the flow of blood. His aortic arch was also widened, Foor said, to stabilize him and allow him to get stronger for the second surgery.

In the second surgery, which took place Jan. 16, 2006, physicians planned to switch the transposed pulmonary and aortic arteries so they would be pumping the correct amount of blood into his lungs and his heart. Foor said Caden also had a hole in his heart that would have to be repaired in that surgery.

"I had to make the decision about his surgeries before his first surgery took place," Foor recalled. "The second surgery had a 30-35 percent mortality rate. I did a lot of praying. I was only 19 when I had Caden. But, I had a lot of support from my mom and dad, Mary and Don Elliott of Evansport. They and my sisters, brother and aunts are a big part of Caden's life. Caden's father is gone a lot in his job."

After Caden's first surgery, Foor spent seven weeks waiting for her son to recover at the children's hospital and two weeks after the second surgery.

"He had a slow recovery after the first surgery. He only weighed five pounds. He weighed five pounds, 15 ounces when he was born and lost that 15 ounces before surgery.

"His surgery was a life-altering experience for me," she recalled. "It seemed like life stopped, like time was frozen. I stayed in a family room at the hospital with other families.

"I saw doctors try to save another little boy in the hospital," she said. "He just slipped away. It was like a nightmare."

After his last surgery in 2006, Caden's health improved. He did have a problem with attacks of arrhythmia (high heart rate) last December.

"He began having these attacks and spent four days in ICU, from Dec. 17 through 21," Foor said. "The doctors changed his medicine and he has been okay since then."

She said Caden will not be able to play contact sports later on in school, but otherwise he is a healthy, normal child.

"He will always have to see a cardiologist and take medicine. Right now, he wants to ride on the bus and go to school. He plays and runs like other children and he loves riding his John Deere tractor and his Cadillac Escalade," she said. "He likes playing with his Nintendo Wii, too."

Foor said she tries to treat Caden like her other children -- daughter Hannah and sons Carson and Collin.

"A nurse at one of the hospitals told me I should treat him like the other children because I wouldn't want him to think he was different," she said.

"So, I do treat him like my other children. But, with everything he has been through, I feel like every day with him is a gift."

INDEX

[T312] "History of Fairfield County", p 620 Sanford FOOR, who has been a resident of Lithopolis for thirty-eight years, has many business interests in this section, including farming, threshing and lumbering, having operated his sawmill continuously since 1879. He was born in Bloom Twp, FCO 1/2 mile NE of this city, March 16, 1848 and is a son of Daniel and Mary (BRAKEBILL) FOOR. Daniel FOOR came to FC from PA when he was a young man and engaged in farming in Bloom township until within 5 yrs of his death, when he retired and moved to Winchester. He married Mary BRAKEBILL and they had 10 ch born to them, 7 of whom are living.

Sanford FOOR has the usual school advantages offered boys in his day and they were sufficient to provide a good foundation. He entered into the mill business in 1879 and handles hard wood for building material. He is
interested also along other lines and is one of the busy men of this place and one of the best known. Politically, Mr. Foor is a Democrat and for 17 yrs served in the office of constable in Bloom Township. Mr. FOOR married Miss Tabitha BOWER and they have had 7 ch, Estella, who lives at home; Hattie, who died when aged 11 yrs, Loretta, who married William CASSIDY and has 2 ch--Evelyn and Byron; Curtis, a resident of Lithopolis who married Margaret CONAWAY; James Monroe, who lives at Columbus and married Jennie DOLLAR; Emerson, who assumed the duties of a justice of the peace on Jan 1, 1910; and Lee, who died in infancy. Mr. Foor and family attend the Methodist Episcopal Church."

"Two years later came the John McLain campaign for governer. My friend, Sanford Foor, was then filling the office of Democratic Central Committeeman from Bloom township. He asked me to go with him to a meeting of his committee at Lancaster. I did, being curious to know how such meetings were conducted. The meeting proceeded to elect an executive committee to conduct the coming campaign. It was decided to appoint seven members. After a number had been proposed, my friend arose and proposed my name as a member. It was so agreed", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 70.

"Sanford Foor had a black [horse] at that time, which none could beat, and was he proud of it? I say he was. I wonder if he could be happy in the 'Land Beyond the Setting Sun' without a duplicate of the black", "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 75.

Speaking of who resided in which houses, the author states, "I cannot recall when it was built or whom were its earliest occupants. Sanford Foor overshadows all who went before. He was the son of Daniel Foor, of the next chapter. He was active in many pursuits. He was the thresherman for the farmers. He operated movable sawmills taking them into the timberland of the farmer. He was a general contractor, and it would be difficult to enumerate all of his business pursuits. Through them all he was a model of integrity." "THE VILLAGE. MEMORIES OF LITHOPOLIS", John Bartram Kramer, August 1936, p 28.
