1949 - Crash Fatal, 3rd Man Near Death. Two Long Beach men were killed and a third critically injured at 5:30 p.m. Friday when two autos smashed headon on Santa Fe Ave., 550 feet south of Del Amo St., the state highway patrol reported. Killed were Walter Cody Foor, 43, of 3572 California ave., and Erwin Kruger, 35, of 2008 Easy Ave. In Torrance General hospital in poor condition is Charles Wayne Jones, 62, of 1039 Atlantic Ave. State Patrolman H. E. Jackson said the accidnt occurred in the westernmost lane of Sante Fe and that Foor, driving a car registered to kruger, apparently crossed over the center line and smashed into Jones' southbound vehicle. Jones was alone in the car. That accident occurred in county territory. Jackson said the two cars crashed together with terrific force, wrecking both. They met with such even force, he reported, that the resltant wreckage moved only a few feet--and in a sideways direction. An ambulance from Torrance Gen. Hosp. first took Jones to that emergency station. Late Friday night his condition was considered grave. Foor and Kruger were pronounced dead on arrival at the same hospital. [Long Beach Independent, Long Beach, CA, Oct. 29, 1949]
