"The fire which destroyed Dow Cohagan's garage and blacksmith shop at Jefferson on old Rt. 33 occurred during my vacation. I was sorry to hear about the loss. Mrs. Cohagan is Eagle-Gazette correspondent from the Carroll community. Dow's father, James A. Cohagan started a blacksmith shop across the road from the site 63 years ago. When Dow came back from service in World War I, he left the teaching profession, having taught in the one-room schools of the city 7 years, and built a new garage at Jefferson. He also continued work with the roge after his father retired. Mr. Cohagan had put out the fire for the night and returned home the evening of the fire. He was sitting on his porch when he heard the fire department go out and head west. For some reason he followed them and found his own building in flames. The fireman had removed two cars and saved most of his tools before Dow reached the scene for which he was most grateful. When the Carroll truck ran out of water, the Lithopolis fireman responded. Dow is undecided about the future. He will not rebuild in Jefferson but may construct a garage in Carroll village. [Lancaster Eagle Gazette, Lancaster, Ohio, July 20, 1962]

[T21911]
NOTE: This family is very 'iffy'. Census data shows some COOK children had a father b in OH rather than VA where Peyton is shown as being born. Perhaps he adopted children from a wife's previous marriage, but wife Martha is shown in one census as having no children.
NOTE: In 1850 he's residing beside Wm. and Nancy COOK, both age 51 or 57 and both b VA, who appear to be living with several children who were also born in VA. This is possibly Peyton's parents and siblings.

", Charles, son b Jan 1873?, 26?y b OH, parents b OH; day labor
NOTE: wife Martha is shown as never having had a child. "Son" Charles' data shows that his father was b in OH, yet Peyton is shown as being b in VA.
1907 - his wife, Martha, applies for his pension.
NOTE: His wife's name seems to switch from Mary to Martha back to Mary and again to Martha. The first census's show the wife was born in VA, the latter ones, even after Peyton disappears, show she was born in OH. What does NOT make sense is that one of the sons shows his mother's maiden name was "Martha Sowers", and he would've had to been born to this "Mary" according to census records. One year wife Mary or Martha is shown having no children, none living, and another year she supposedly had 6 and 5 living. At some points I believe Mary and Martha are completely different individuals, and at other times I believe they must be the same individual.
NOTE: There's an entry in the cemetery records that lists Peyton Cook, Civil War veteran, next of kin Martha Cook, buried VAE, lot 6, grave 1. There's a good possibility he IS buried there and either no stone was erected for him or it no longer exists. According to Martha's death certificate, she is supposedly buried in Lithopolis cem. as well but there is no entry for her at all. "Cemeteries of Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH", Fairfield County Gen. Soc., Chapter OGS, 1996, p 186.

[T12439] Found this information in the 1857 partition records of "Magdalena Reber Stage" -- she petitioned for devorce from William Stage of Pickaway County. They were married in 1836. Both had previously married and had children by their former marriages. This must be the same William since Magdalena was formerly married to a REBER.
