John Byerly
Former Citizen of Jones County Passes Away at Rock Rapids
28 October 1824-3 November 1901
The following is from a Rock Rapids paper of last week.
"John Byerly, father of Mrs. H. D. Conklin, dropped dead of heart disease Sunday evening just at dusk at the family home in East Rock Rapids. Mr. Byerly, who was 77 years of age, had been in poor health for some time and had frequent attacks of heart failure. Sunday evening he started out to do the chores about the barn and when he did not return at the proper time, Mr. Conklin followed to see if he was all right. He was found laying on the ground near the stables and life was extinct, although the body was still warm. He had apparently fallen and died without a struggle as his features were composed (note: lost a line of print here where the story continues on the next page).
The remains were taken to Anamosa, Iowa, Monday by Mr. Conklin and Melvin Byerly, a son of the deceased." [Could this be Marshall?]
John Byerly was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, Oct. 28d, 1824, and died in Rock Rapids, Iowa, Nov. 3d. 1901, aged 77 years and 11 days. His parents Francis and Catharine Byerly located with their family in Jackson township, Jones county Iowa, in 1846, John being 22 years of age at the time.
On Dec. 30th, 1854 he was married to Miss Filicia Alspaugh. To them were born ten children--six daughters and four sons--four daughters and one son preceeded their father to the world beyond, while two daughters and three sons survive him, namely: Mrs. Celesta Fielding of Anamosa, Mrs. M E. Conklin of Rock Rapids; the ***** A. Byerly, of Marion, and Marshall ***** of Anamosa and Adam of Ardock, North Dakota--survive besides numerous other relatives.
In 1877 he sold his farm in Jackson township and moved to Prairieburg, Linn county and lived there five years, when he again purchased a farm near Monticello and located again in Jones county. He lived here about five years. His wife died nineteen years ago coming this December when he again sold his farm and moved to south-western Kansas, where he purchased a farm homestead and lived on it two or three years when he sold out and come back to Iowa and since has made his home with his daughter Mrs. Conklin of Rock Rapids, Iowa.
John Byerly was a noble man as a husband, father, neighbor or citizen. He was a member of the U. B. church in his younger days, eighteen years ago uniting with the M. E. church.
The funeral and committal services were conducted by Elder Nathan Potter at Antioch church Nov. 6. at 2 o'clock p.m.
Submitted by: Margaret Byerly Filbin.

ancestors place of origin, but why would George and Harriet's children all
have different countries listed for their parents? And in this entry, why
does the married couple living with them have different last names? Is
Harring perhaps the woman's maiden name?

[8808] MAIDEN NAME/DOB/POB/DOD/POD/DOM: From info submitted to the LDS by Jeffrey Manton Meadows of Liberty, TX, and Delna POWELL of Lake Montezuma, AZ; submission dates unk. Info NOT DOCUMENTED!

"On Saturday, Jan. 15, 1876, in Henry Twp., Mrs. Catharine Nicodemus, aged 83y 5m 19d. The deceased was born in Carroll Co., MD, Jully 27, 1792. Her maiden name was Catherine Eeckerd. She joined the German Reform church at about the age of 15 years, the faith of which she observed until her death. She married Valentine Nicodemus August 30, 1814, whom she survived over 36 years. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Fairfield Co., Ohio, where they remained until the year 1836, and from then to Henry Co., Indiana. Her husband died about one year after, leaving her in the woods to battle with the hardships of early settlers and support a family of eight children -- three boys and five girls. She remained at this place until 1865, when she removed to Kosciusko Co., and in 1869 to Fulton county. She was the mother of 9 children, seven of whom are still living and were present at her death. She leaves 37 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was a kind and affectionate mother, a good and accomodating neighbor, without an enemy to my knowledge. She was always highly respected and esteemed by all who knew her and leaves many relatives to mourn her death." Rochester Sentinel, Rochester, Indiana, 1876.

of three children whil a relative helped two others to safety by dropping

NOTE: Three of the children show they were married at this time in 1900, yet none are shown with their spouses.

HISTORY OF PREBLE COUNTY OHIO, With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches, W.W. Williams, Cleveland, OH; 1881.

"ANDREW JACKSON REYNOLDS was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 14, 1831. His parents were Sacket and Mary Anne Reynolds. He graduated at Woodward college, Cincinnati, in 1851, and at the Theological seminary of Princeton, New Jersey, in 1855. He was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian church in 1856, was at Pleasant Run, Ohio, from 1856 to 1861; at Cumminsville, Ohio, from 1861 to 1869; at Lithopolis, Ohio, from 1870 to 1873; at Eaton, Ohio, from 1875 to the present.

He married Miss Charity P. Hunter, December 16, 1857, at Pleasant Run, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs Reynolds have had six children, of whom four survive-Clarence G., Mary E., Walter H., and Grace A., born respectively in 1859, 1861, 1864, and 1868. Clarence G. is a member of the senior class at the University of Wooster, Ohio.

Mr. Reynolds' ancestors, on his maternal grandmother's side, whose maiden name was Dumont, were French Huguenots, who were persecuted by the State church for their religious opinions, and some of whom fled to America. Mr. Reynolds still possesses two French Bibles, which belonged to their ancestors, and which are not only treasures to the antiquarian, but are mute witnesses to the nobility of soul which will not sin against conscience at the command of tyrants. Mr. Reynolds' maternal grandfather was Captain Moses Guest, who served in the Revolutionary war, and was a man of great purity of character, and some poetic talent. He formerly lived in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and came to Ohio with his family in 1817. He died universally lamented in Cincinnati, in 1828, aged seventy-two.

Mr. Reynolds' father, Sacket Reynolds, was one of the earliest printers in Cincinnati, coming to that city in 1806. He was long connected with the newspaper press in Cincinnati, respectively in the Liberty Hall and Cincinnati Gazette, the National Republican, the Cincinnati Commercial, and the Cincinnati Press. He died in Cincinnati, aged seventy-one, in 1867.
