OBIT: Published in the Rochester Sentinel, Rochester, Indiana, March 3, 1922. Sylvester Alspach, 69, one of the most prominent of Rochester's merchants, and a life long resident of this community, died at seven o'clock Friday morning at his residence on south Main street after an illness of six weeks. Death was caused by complications. Sylvester Alspach was born in Fairfield Co., Ohio, September 20, 1852, a son of Henry and Deborah Alspach. When an infant his family moved to Fulton county, where he resided with them on a farm in the Mt. Zion neighborhood until he had reached the age of 21 years. On February 15, 1872, he was unived in marriage to Mariah Goss after which they moved to Rochester where he engaged in the meat business at the location now occupied by his son-in-law, Charles Taylor, at the corner of Main and 9th streets.

He continued in this occupation until about 25 years ago when he opened the Hub Shoe Store with his son, Guy Alspach, as a partner. The two continued this business until a few years ago, when Mr. Alspach turned the business over to his son and opened up another shoe store with his grandson, Hubert Taylor, as a parter.

He had been in good health until a few weeks ago when he began to fail rapidly. His ailment was diagnosed as anemia. Mr. Alspach seemed to know that he would not recover from this sickness and accordingly completed all of his own funeral arrangements. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Knights of Pythias lodge. Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Charles Taylor of this city and Mrs. C. M. Hart of Salt Lake City, Utah, and one son, Guy Alspach, of Rochester. Funeral services from the residence Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. F. O. Fraley in charge. Burial at I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

WILL: Sylvester Alspach of Fulton Co., IN: Will book F, p 121. Dated 06 Apr 1920, probated 06 Mar 1922. Heirs: wife Maria, beloved children Elizabeth Estella Taylor, Guy Alspach, Olvane Hart, and Knights of Pithias Lodge #22. Executors: Wife Maria... "that she advise with my brother-in-law, Robert B. Marsh, in settling estate".

NOTE: This second marriage for Pearl Babcock is not documented. Her first husband, Ray Foor, is married to someone else in 1930 so I went looking for Pearl and her daughter, Gladys. This appears to be them in the 1930 census, and they possibly may even reside in the same house that she and Ray Foor did, as they're both on Providence street in Whitehouse (no house numbers shown on census). Since in 1920 Ray was working at a restaurant, and in 1930 Pearl's new husband Lawrence Garber was a proprietor for a restaurant, it appears that he took over Ray's position and the restaurant and possibly their living quarters were in the same building.

DOD: Listed in brother Eugene's July 2003 obituary as a sister, "Helen Battle" who preceded him in death.

The following was sent via May 2007 email by Susan (Heppner) Crane:
Helen Elizabeth Battle
Born: April 27, 1919 - Wilmington, NC
Died: April 6, 2000 - Schaumburg, IL (Chicago)
Later years Helen lived in a nice nursing care facility called Lexington in Schaumburg, IL where she died. Helen never married. She lovingly took care of Mabel many years and also Mabel and Helen lived with my mom and dad and family for a few years when I was a baby. Helen liked babies and young children, it surprised us to know as great a caretaker of them, she never married and had any of her own. She was a dear aunt to me and we were very close. I believe one of the many gentlemen callers she had in her early years was the love of her life, don't know the name, but he went off to war and unfortunately never came back. That is why I think she never married, but I'm not certain. She also worked many jobs through the years and was very good at it. She liked music, crocheting, roast beef and mashed potatoes. Her faith was Christian Scientist. We used to call Aunt Helen her nickname - Aunt Honey because one of us kids couldn't say Aunt Helen when were were tots, so we called her Aunt Honey and she has been Aunt Honey to us ever since, and "Aunt Honey" was what her nickname means - sweet. Cremated at Wunders (spelling?) Cemetary, Chicago, IL on Clark Avenue. She died before 9/11 - we were grateful that she was not
here to witness such a horrific event. I miss her greatly. Spent a lot of time with her growing up, she was an aunt who liked to sing, read books to the children and play games with them. She was very active in our lives. All our holidays aren't the same without her. My mom misses picking-up the phone to call her every day. She loved sitting out in the yard on beautiful days and she died on one of those very beautiful days. I have a lot of memories of her.

[5781] POB: From dau Maggie's 1900 census records.

"His [Jerome C. Mckinley] parents were James and Effie (Courtright) McKinley, the former born in Scotland, while the latter was a native of Fairfield county, Ohio. James McKinley came to Ohio with his parents when he was quite young and here he met and married his wife. He engaged for many years in farming but enjoyed a few years of retirement in Lithopolis. His death occurred at the age of sixty-nine years and Mrs. McKinley was called to another life at the age of forty-two years. Ten children were born to this union, four of whom are living: Mrs. Maggie Glick who is a widow and resides in Lithopolis; J. Andrew, a retired cattle-man of Columbus, Ohio; J. F., a druggest of Leigh, Nebraska; and Jerome C., the subject of this review. Mr. McKinley was always a stanch supporter of the democratic party, and both he and his wife were active in the Presbyterian church."
